What a waste that you paid Astro for 2 months and not watching it. You should have suspend it.

There are some channels are Astro receives directly from the channel source are actually natively in 16:9 aspect ratio, highly presumed to be HD feed. But after "go through" Astro's side of its video re-encode as well as delaying 3-5 mins to modify the original feed (such as removing ads, slotting in relevant ads that will profit them, as well as censor some inappropriate scenes), the aspect ratio of the video you receive from Astro for SD channels is 4:3 only. That's why some SD channels on Astro, you'll notice the letterbox (black bars on top and bottom) are always there. These are few of the examples: Astro Ria, AEC, Wah Lai Toi, Shuang Xing, History Channel, DIVA, Astro SuperSport 1, 2, 3 and other few more.

Even letterbox is there at all times, but when it comes to Astro slotting in ads for SD channels especially Astro made ads like promoting Astro First/Best movies as well as the recent launch OD service, the aspect ratio of the ad will be back to 4:3, resulting no more letterbox (except for SD/HD simulcast channels). After the ads, letterbox will come back again. If you must know, Astro will "centre-cut" the original ad which is in HD 16:9 into 4:3 so that SD channels will show the ads with perfect shape on square 4:3 TVs without letterbox and it is in full screen, but of course main disadvantage will be HDTV users which eventually it will be stretched.

Back to the topic, yes the channel source is in HD and 16:9, but the channel sometimes show older SD programmes with the aspect ratio of 4:3. So from the side of the channel source, they will add pillarbox. In addition to its pillarbox, plus Astro added letterbox to the channel to provide to customers, eventually it ends up as "window-boxed", which is the exact same thing as what you saw on AFC.


CONCLUSION: If you think it's too long lazy to read, just "LB Expand" it using your Astro remote control whenever you see letterbox like this, problem solved.

As long u tell Astro technician to come visit to your house, you will be charge RM50 service charge. Unless if your Astro bill exceed RM100 a month, then Astro will waive the service charge for you. As for the LNB, I'm not so sure.

Not entirely. Some of the content you saw on Astro, they own an exclusive rights for that, which only Astro can broadcast and no other pay TV can broadcast it. If the other pay TV insists, then that pay TV have to deal with Astro, which that pay TV will have to pay higher price to Astro get the exclusive content from Astro.

Whenever you see Signal Strength is 0%, it means there's no satellite signal found. Check your satellite cable at the back of your decoder, make sure it is not loose. If it still persist, you need to realign your satellite dish. If you don't know how to align, inform Astro about this so that they will send technician over to help you align the dish.

Service fee of RM50 (excl GST) MIGHT BE INCURRED if your total amount of Astro monthly subscription is not more than RM100 exclude GST.

Is anyone has Astro IPTV installed? Want to ask, is there any settings in the decoder that you can somehow change the operation mode from Hybrid mode into full Satellite mode? Perhaps is there any hidden settings can able to change this setting?

This is pretty much similar to my previous question. First of all, I am not even sure whether is there a hidden setting for it to switch back to Satellite mode on Astro IPTV decoder, even it is just temporary. So I am not sure if you bring back your Astro IPTV decoder to your parents house, will work or not.

But if you use Astro PVR decoder, then you can still continue watching your programmes by bringing back your decoder (and smartcard) to your parents house, and just plug and play. But since your parents using Astro HD decoder, it only has single tuner instead of dual tuners like PVR/IPTV decoders do. With dual tuners, you can record 2 channels at a time. This is why PVR installation requires 2 satellite cables to connect to your satellite dish. But single tuner ones (like your parent house), once you are recording that particular channel, you are not able to watch other channels until you stop recording.

Whenever your house (except if you're staying high rise homes that uses centralized dish) has PVR or Multiroom, Astro installer will install dual tuner LNB to your satellite dish. Then you need to figure out a way how to connect 2 satellite cable from your Astro PVR decoder to the satellite dish in order to use the full functions of PVR like recording 2 channels at a time. Otherwise, you can only watch/record 1 channel at a time only.

He says it is possible to switch to satellite mode by pressing some yellow button on the remote control. Perhaps you can try that, right now at your home. First, you unplug the LAN cable (Ethernet cable) at your Astro IPTV decoder, then your TV will appear "Network currently not available". Try to press the yellow button as said by krel89. If nothing happens, take a look around at the setting menus by pressing "home" button on Astro remote, see whether is there any options to change to Satellite mode. If got, please inform us ASAP.

Okay, once press the Yellow button, it changes to Satellite mode. How about:
1) If change to other channels, will it still remain Satellite mode?
2) If put the decoder into standby mode, and press the power button on remote to turn it back on, will it still on Satellite mode, or it will switch back to IPTV and attempt to get the channels using Internet?
3) If power off the Astro IPTV decoder, and then power it back on, will it still on Satellite mode, or it will switch back to IPTV and attempt to get the channels using Internet?
4) After you press the Yellow button to switch to Satellite mode, are these SD channels appear on the channel list or the EPG? Example like Astro Ria ch104, Shuang Xing ch324, all Astro Best/First channels from ch468-495, SuperSport 1, 2, 3 (ch810, ch811, ch816), and many more. Full list here:
