No need to pay BPL broadcasting rights. They cannot maintain current sport package rates to customer.

I think we'll see another price hike on sport package before Rio Olympics & Euro 2016.

Besides ringgit depreciation, the EPL right cost rise high AF aS well. I dont think the cost will reduce even if there is any competition. But I am not sports fan haha

Not a sport fan either, so I still can manage my monthly bill under RM100.

hye guys i would like to ask some questions

i planned to upgrade to byond soon (better late than never)
and i would like to change my package as well.

currently i am subscribing family + 2 mini
I would like to change to family + 1 mini + mustika + byond.

I tried changing online using astro selfservice however it wont allow me to choose only 1 mini package.

Is it not possible at all?
thanks
*
1 Mini pack is only available if you take up NILAI or SPORT PACKAGE.

So NILAI (Mustika, Indo Pek, Tayangan Hebat, HD & Astro on The GO are bundled) + 1 mini = RM97.52 = RM97.50

Your current package = Family + HD + MUSTIKA + 2 MINIS = RM101.66 = RM101.65 So you will save about RM4 if you opt for NILAI + 1 MINI.

I exclude SPORT PACKAGE + 1 Mini because it will be more expensive.

The smart squirrel had a bad fall finally! They can go to hell with their strategies! Now all they hv is the sports pack to extort customers. Even then many like me hv given up sports pack too . they are the most expensive with not many premium content all mainly asian malaysian versions. The asian Movie Pack is a dumping ground, there is nothing great to subscribe in assstro! They never improved on PQ still on MPEG2 and having a poor PQ HD and the worst SD

1. I think price hike (especially on Sport and HD package) is imminent considering they've just won EPL rights and they'll be showing Rio Olympics and Euro this year. I've given up the sport package too and life goes on even without sport package.

2. Instead of adding new channels to its platform, they make more money by leasing the transponders to others.

3. There are numerous channels on its platform e.g. ANIMAX, MTV, E!, NICK, CARTOON NETWORK, AFC etc which already have HD feed, yet they don't upgrade those channels to HD.

4. I wonder if there is any other company will apply for satellite TV licence when ASTRO's exclusive licence expires in Feb 2017/

With EURO, Olympics, Thomas Cup in the coming months, they will definitely raise the fees. They should update the existing channels like MTV, NICK, ANIMAX, CARTOON NETWORK, FOX SPORTS 2 & 3 ETC to HD just like what STARHUB and SINGTEL are doing. They neither upgrade existing channels to HD nor introduce new channels yet still have the guts to raise the fees?

For casual fans like me who doesn't need to watch all 51 matches live and all Olympics events, watching selected matches and games on ASTRO ARENA and free to air channels will save me RM104.94. Of course it won't be in HD but beggars cannot be choosers.

For something called FREE satellite TV with less than interesting channels like NJOI, RM363 for installation fee is obviously not cheap.

South Korean entertainment and media contents company, CJ E&M is rebranding its overseas channel, “Channel M” to “tvN Asia” this coming June.

The company will also be launching a new platform called, tvN Movies which specialises in South Korean feature films – around the final quarter of the year.
[SIZE=7]
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Korea’s leading pay-TV channel.

With a great line-up of variety shows and drama, tvN is expanding its footprint across Asia, offering their signature content like “Friends Over Flowers”, “Three Meals A Day”, “Masterchef Korea” and “I Can See Your Voice” on the same day and date with the Korean telecast, World Screen reports.

On selected territories, the channel will also offer a drama slot on weekdays and a movie block on weekends.

Aiming to be the top channel in the Asian region, the footprint covers ten Asian territories, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar and Australia.

“We are excited to rebrand channel M as tvN to cope with our expansion plan in Southeast Asia. We see many growth opportunities for Korean entertainment businesses in the region,” said Samey Lee, CEO of CJ E&M HK.

“We noticed the change of viewers’ demographics. K-wave has been widely spread from teenagers to other target groups such as university students, young executives and families. A growing demand of diverse K-contents is seen from Southeast Asia, and tvN is providing the answer.”

CHANNEL M TO BE REBRANDED BACK AS TVN ASIA. TVN MOVIES WILL BE A NICE ADDITION TO THE KOREAN PACK. I THINK KOREAN PACK SHOULD ADD ARIRANG & KMTV ASIA TOO.

Request for termination. The officer said I need to settle the last bill. Proceed with payment via call using my credit card. I was asked the reason for termination. Sarcastically replied that there are too many repeats and overpriced packages. Account will be disconnected in 30 days. Now I have extra RM100+/- to deposit to my ASB account every month.

They're too big to fall. Instead of forcing them to listen to the customers (which they never do), my decision to terminate my subscription is due to personal factors: the packages are overpriced, too many repeats, unresolved rain fade issue, too many advertisements, overly censored and delayed contents yet I'm paying more than RM100/ month. Some people can't live without BPL, LA LIGA, EURO etc so ASTRO will still survive.

MEDIA PRIMA used to get broadcast right for EURO. I guess they did not bid this year and spend the money on LIGA SUPER MALAYSIA. As for Olympics, HYPPTV is an official IPTV broadcaster, ASTRO is the official satellite TV broadcaster while RTM is the official FTA broadcaster.

PETALING JAYA: Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd’s net profit surged 20.12% to RM202.17mil for the first financial quarter to April 30, 2016, compared to the same quarter a year ago on the back of lower depreciation of property, plant and equipment and finance cost.

Its revenue jumped 2.46% to RM1.36bil mainly due to an increase in advertising and home-shopping of RM14.1mil and RM27.4mil, offset by a decrease in subscription revenue of RM11.2mil.[COLOR=red]

Earnings per share increased to 3.88 sen from 3.23 sen previously.

Astro also declared a first interim single-tier dividend of three sen per share. This is higher than the 2.75 sen it had declared in the same quarter of the previous year.

The company has a cash position of RM553.1mil compared to RM595.7mil for the period.

On its higher net profit, this increase was due to lower depreciation of property, plant and equipment by RM19mil and lower net finance cost by RM34.2mil due to a higher unrealised foreign exchange gain arising from unhedged finance lease liability of RM31.4mil and unhedged vendor financing of RM9.8mil. This was offset by an increase in the transponder’s lease interest of RM6.3mil and offset by higher tax expenses by RM15.2mil.

The decrease in subscription revenue was due to a decrease in pay-TV residential subscribers [COLOR=red]by 1,000 (from 3,504,500 to 3,503,500), while the average revenue per user for pay-TV residential subscribers remained at RM99.

Radio’s revenue for the current quarter of RM72mil was higher by RM10.2mil compared with the previous corresponding quarter of RM61.8mil. The higher revenue performance was driven by continuous strong listenership ratings.

Compared to the first quarter of its financial year ended Jan 31, 2016, its average revenue per user remained the same at RM99, while its churn rate reduced slightly to 10% from 10.3% previously.

AS EXPECTED, SUBSCRIPTION REVENUE FALLS BUT HOME SHOPPING AND ADVERTISEMENT BECOME THEIR SAVIOR.

TAKEN FROM HONG LEONG BANK'S RESEARCH:

Astro’s 1QFY17 increased 2% yoy mainly contributed by Astro Go Shop as well as its radio segment, where both charted double digit increase of 73% and 16%, respectively.

TV subscription dropped 1% yoy to RM1075.9m. Due to the tough consumer and business environment, growth of subscribers came solely from its NJOI Platform.
ARPU declined marginally by 0.3%, from RM99.3/month to RM99/month (its yoy growth was stagnant). Management is targeting ARPU of RM100 for FY17. To mitigate lower ARPU, Astro plans to increase the price of its sporting content sometime this year. Hence, we expect churn rate to increase slightly once the magnitude of price increase is known.

TAKEN FROM PUBLIC INVEST RESEARCH:

1QFY17 revenue driven by higher advertising revenue and contribution from Go Shop. 1QFY17 revenue grew 2.5% YoY attributable to: (i) increase in TV adex (+7% YoY to RM72m); (ii) higher radio adex (+16% YoY to RM72m); and (iii) growth in home-shopping TV business (+73% YoY to RM64m). However, TV subscription dropped marginally by 1% YoY due to a slight decline in pay-TV subscriber base of 3.50m (1QFY16: 3.51m), while ARPU remained at RM99.0. Astro net added 80,000 subscribers in 1QFY17 with 127,000 NJOI subscribers and termination of 46,500 pay-TV accounts. QoQ revenue dropped 2.8% due to the accounts termination and lower ARPU of RM99.0 (4QFY16: RM99.3) owing to weak consumer market.
