AS EXPECTED FROM THE HALF-PAST-SIX RTM. DIGITIZATION STARTED IN 2012 AND THE TEST TRIAL BEGIN IN Q3, 2015. WHAT HAVE THEY DONE FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS?

For the third quarter ended Oct 31, 2014 (Q3), net profit fell 9% year-on-year to RM113.3 million and for the nine months ended Oct 31, 2014, net profit improved 13% year-on-year to RM379.4 million, which represents 67% of Maybank IB's full-year estimate.

"The shortfall was due to higher-than-expected overheads. Peculiarly, the number of Pay-TV subscribers actually eased 5,000 quarter-on-quarter and the number of high-yielding Super Pack subscribers eased 1,000 quarter-on-quarter due to weak consumer sentiment.

"If memory serves us correctly, this is the first time in history that the number of Pay-TV and Super Pack subscribers declined quarter-on-quarter. While Astro intends to extract more from high net worth subscribers, the statistics above suggest to us that it may not succeed," it said.

Based on Q3 results, Maybank IB assumes lower net Pay-TV additions, lower take-up of HD and Super Pack products, lower average revenue per user (ARPU) in the financial year but higher ARPU in the next two financial years due to the HD price hike and 2ppts lower earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) margins due to higher overheads.

The research house trimmed its earnings estimates by 10%, 4% and 10% for the current and next two financial years respectively. It also reduced its target price by 3% to RM3.20 from RM3.30 but maintained its hold call on the stock.
MIDF Research has also reduced its FY15 and FY16 earnings estimates by 4.2% and 3.7% respectively based on the lower-than-expected earnings.

"We assumed slower net adds growth primarily in the Pay-TV households segment in view of the weak consumer sentiments. Also, we trimmed our Ebitda margin assumption. In addition, our dividend payout forecasts for FY15 and FY16 were also reduced by 10% and 20% to 9 sen and 10 sen respectively," it said in a report last Friday.

MIDF maintained its neutral call on the stock, with a revised target price of RM3.60 from RM3.75 previously.

"We are concerned with the slower net adds from the Pay-TV segments. Despite strong growth from the NJOI segments, the NJOI households only made up less than 20% of Astro's subscriber base. This could signal a slower growth momentum in Astro's subscriber base in the foreseeable term," it added.

Affin Hwang Investment Bank Bhd expects the market environment to be more challenging for Astro going forward, due to the lower Pay-TV net adds and higher costs thus cutting its FY15-17E core earnings per share (EPS) forecasts by 5% to 9%.

ASTRO IS FINALLY FEELING THE HIT. THEY THOUGHT INCREASING THE FEES WON'T BACKFIRE?

I agree. Im also thinking of cutting my astro next year if things starting to get tough but the only thing i will miss are the live BPL matches in HD. The rest i can get it online.

With a weaker ringgit and come GST next year but very tight household budget, Astro will definitely be one of the things in the "luxury" list that we can live without. I still remember that when I was persuaded to upgrade to Super Pack, the agent promised that the rate won't increase. Since then, it has been increased twice. I'm just waiting for the contract to expire.

Malaysian government has intended to launch an English news channel to broadcast news about Malaysia to the world. However, the ministry has indicated that they have no plans to launch an English news channel in Malaysia.

“If we want to bring Malaysia to the world, there it should be in a language which people can easily understand us — which is English,” said Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Minister of Communication and Multimedia. ”However, there is no plans to have an all English news channel in English in the country,” he added.

The Communication and Multimedia ministry has announced its plans to establish a 24/7 Bahasa Malaysia news channel through Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) after the completion of digitisation.

GOOD NEWS: CHANNEL M HD & OHK HD ARE FINALLY AVAILABLE

BAD NEWS: WE NEED EXTRA BUCKS TO SUBSCRIBE THE KOREAN PACK

NOT SURE GOOD NEWS OR BAD NEWS: BOTH CHANNEL M HD & OHK HD ARE ON MEASAT 3A. IS MEASAT 3B NOT OPERATIONAL YET? THIS CAN EXPLAIN WHY FOX SPORT2 HD & FOX SPORT3 HD ARE NOT ADDED YET BECAUSE ASTRO STILL DEPENDS ON MEASAT 3 AND 3A FOR NEW CHANNELS IT LAUNCHES.

But is it essential for measat 3B to be operational then only they can launch Fox Sports 2 & 3 in HD? They have no difficulty having 5-6 extra HD channels during events like World Cup & Olympics.

I do agree that they should prioritize bringing in FOX SPORT HD 2 and 3 than GOLF CHANNEL HD.
ASTRO adds two new High Definition (HD) Korean channels - Oh!K HD (Astro Channel 394) and Channel M HD (Astro Channel 395) which are available for free preview from Feb 16 until Feb 28. Subsequently, Oh!K HD and Channel M HD will be part of Astro's new Korean Pack offering, priced at RM10 monthly.
RM10/Month for Korean Pack. Pretty reasonable and doesn't really hurt the wallet. It is cheaper than Mustika Pack and that outdated Indo Pack. Most importantly, it is cheaper than Hypp TV that charges RM9 only for CHANNEL M HD

More money+space for capitalism ads...

Also for censorship purpose to black out content unsuitable for local viewers. The price is pretty reasonable as compared to Hypp TV. But where is Hello Japan, NHK HD and Aniplus? Even the existing NHK has no English subtitles.

NHK World Premium generally doesn't carry any English subtitles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHK_World_Premium

NHK World HD (the one on HyppTV) is catered to overseas audiences and provide English subtitles/audio for all the shows.

Why didn't they replace the existing one with the one with English subtitles is a mystery. Do they expect all Malaysians to understand Japanese?

Maybe Astro is just doing their part to support "golf for all" movement by launching Golf Channel HD:

Golf Should Be A Sport For All - Najib

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (left) handed over trophy to Anirban Lahiricha who claim the first Maybank Malaysian Open 2015 (MMO)'s title here today.KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he wants golf to be not just an elite sports but a sport for the people whereby more Malaysians are able to play.

Therefore, he said the sports should be accessible to all Malaysians at every level and hope with the move more Malaysians will emerge as top golfers in the future.

"(In this regard) I would like to congratulate the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) for starting a programme to promote golf at the school level where 11 schools are participating in this programme.

"I have given RM2 million to the MGA to promote golf at school level and I am willing to contribute more in the future," he said in his speech during the Maybank Malaysian Open 2015 prize giving ceremony at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC), here Sunday.

India's Anirban Lahiri emerged as the champion of the tournament and took home the trophy and US$500,000 (RM1.75 million) which was presented by Najib on the 18th green of KLGCC golf course.

On the tournament, Najib said it attracted around 450 million viewers around the world who watched a very splendid game which started last Thursday.

Najib also congratulated national golfer Danny Chia who emerged as the best Malaysian player in the tournament and Gavin Kyle Green who also stood out and crowned as the tournament's best amateur player.

"We are getting more and more Malaysian professional players competing in the highest level," he said.

Najib also applauded Maybank for being a very good title sponsor over the last 10 years of the event.

"This year the prize money is bigger and hope the prize will be even bigger in the years to come," he said.

From this list, there are quite a number of HD channels yet to make their way to Astro's platform:

well, maybe hypp tv is open their channel for "sharing content"
and look what we have to pay for? now trending that every year have price revised...  doh.gif
bukan ke hypp tv ada astro channel jugak?
mcm awani, oasis, Supersport dgn Vaannavil?
*
We can make two inferences:
1. Hypptv did not sign an exclusive deal with the content providers making it possible for those channels to appear on Astro
2. Access to those hypptv channels were given in return of Astro Supersport etc

KUALA LUMPUR: 85 percent of the Malaysian population can expect better quality pictures and sound and can watch local
free-to-air (FTA) television in high definition (HD) by April next year, said Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd Director Datuk Hilmi Mohd Noor.

The benefits of digital TV will be enjoyed first by viewers in Peninsular Malaysia's east coast, once phase one of the digital terrestrial TV (DTT) project rolls out for Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan in January 2015, he said.

Phase two, covering Sabah and Sarawak, is expected to be rolled out in February, followed by phase three for Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.

The country's switchover to digital broadcasting will be completed in April 2016 with phase four, covering Selangor, the Klang Valley, Putrajaya and all capital cities and suburban towns, Hilmi said at the launch of the DTT services here today by Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

The fact that the East Coast was badly hit by the flood which will cost the government millions to rebuild the infrastructure, I think the digitization will be delayed. TBH, they should begin the project in Klang Valley, not the other way around. Having said that, when the project is complete, will Astro subscribers need to buy the set-top-box sold by Puncak Semangat to enjoy the HD FTA channels or will Astro add those channels on their lineup? Currently, Al Hijrah has HD feed yet Astro only broadcasts the SD version.

Streaming is a plausible option if you happen to be in the areas covered by HSBB like UNIFI. The reality is streaming will cost you more if the only Internet service available in the areas is broadband service with limited quota.
