Hi sifus. Need some recommendations for headphones.

Currently using Sennheiser HD6XX (HD650), and I find that the mids are recessed. Amped or unamped, vocals doesnt sound as pleasing as I had hoped. Is there any recommendation for a headphone with warm sound signature that doesnt sacrifice the mids as much? Budget about 1k. Thank you!

HD6XX has one of the sweetest mid already. What is your setup?
*
Paired with Fiio E10K. Onboard dac and the fiio dac don't sound that different to me.

I came from the HD518 and the Audio Technica AD500, so I was used to the very prominent vocals. I love the lower end and the details on the HD6XX, just that vocals a bit recessed.

IMO, instead of buying a new headphone, you should invest in a better DAC and/with amp.
I had Fiio E10 years ago, it wasn't really impressive.
With budget around RM1k, you can get a decent DAC and/with amp, your HD6XX will sound a lot better. The clarity is on a different level.
You may check on O2 + SDAC DAC/AMP or Grace Design SDAC together with an amp like this.
Do more survery / reviews reading smile.gif

I'm not planning to go with another dac/amp route. I will be frequently using it on my office pc as well, and the company pc unable to install anything including dac drivers. Unless install amp alone. So im planning to get another headphone in near future instead. The HD6XX sounds really good for some songs, especially rock. But pop and jazz i feel like the vocal a bit lacking. Im guessing I'm just used to the sound signature of my previous headphones. Thanks for the advice anyway smile.gif

HD6XX (HD650) have very forward mids already compare to most other headphones. Have you tried using gain on your amp if you prefer the sound like that. Or if you got balance cable the amp can output more power for the headphone.

SHP9500 have more forward mids but it's not warm signature like HD6XX, it's more brighter.
Or you can get 2020 model of HIFIMAN HE400i or HE4XX, planar driver sound different than dynamic driver.
*
I feel the amp is powerful enough, enthusiastic listening at low gain setting with volume knob at 5-6. My amp no balanced output. Bass boost setting only make the buss muddy, so i switch off.

SHP9500 is a cheap alternative, might look into this. The HE400 also very good reviews despite majority says it's on the bright side. Quite keen to have a planar headphone as well. Haha. Thanks for the recommendation. smile.gif

Wow never heard of this in lifetime

Try warmer and more powerful dac/amp

Also u might misunderstood meaning of recessed mids in audio
*
Maybe im using the wrong term. Let me explain in another way, it feels like singer is standing further away than the instruments, and further away than what im used to with the HD518 and ATH AD500.

If the amp is capable of getting the HD6XX to enthusiastic listening levels at just half the volume and at low gain, I still need to get a more powerful amp?

Also, doesn't the HD6XX already has a warm sound signature? A warmer amp is a good pairing to bring the vocals to the front?

Can confirm. I was experiencing what you experienced.

I was using a dacx6 and upgraded to a e30/schiit heresy. Vocals are sublime now
*
Thanks for the suggestion. Based on your experience, which of the two contributes most to the vocal/mids improvement? If it's the Heresy, then i can try to get that one first and try to pair it with the Fiio E10K with the Fiio as the DAC (also have a spare GoVibe DAC lying around somewhere).

You just gotten the 6XX or have been using for some times already?
Maybe HD518 and ATH AD500 are more brighter and you not used to 6XX sound signature. If I listen on SHP9500 the singer sounds like in my head while with HD650 the singer sounds like few feets away. HD650 better bass and lack highs than SHP9500 create than sound illusion.

You bought the amp already? If not suggest you tryout the amp first that you plan to buy to listen if there's difference. 6XX is not really hard to drive. Don't want you waste money buy amp when actual problem is you not used to the headphone sound signature.
*
Using it about 1 month now. Slightly more used to it by now but still i find the vocals not as forward as i want it to. I have tried with a different DAC and also multiple sources, and managed to get the vocals slightly better but still overall sounds recessed to me. Like the whole band is playing front stage, but singer is sitting where the drummer usually sits, at the back.

I just went to Sennheiser store to try out the HD600. Amped and unamped, the sound signature is exactly like how i want it. Vocals are more prominent. Bass slightly lesser but not a deal breaker for me. I'm likely making the switch to the HD600.

Good that you find the one you prefer. Both HD600 and HD650 are end game headphones for some people.
*
Just bought the HD600. biggrin.gif

Currently still breaking in, doesnt feel as smooth as the one I demo in store. Should get better after some play time. But the sound signature is same, which I really like. Very neutral. I feel like a tube amp will do wonders for the HD600, but for now, the sound is really good for me. A downgrade that needed me to fork out more money, but very happy with the sound thumbup.gif

Thanks for your suggestions earlier. I do plan to get the O2 SDAC/AMP or the E30/Heresy combo in future. Considering Topping DX3 as well, but solely due to the bluetooth functionality.

So what you guys recommend for open back headphones, coming from XM4:-

Requirement
1.) Can be driven with Fiio BTR3k
2.) Comfortable for listening for long hours.
3.) Bright sounding, balanced bass
a.) Recommendation in below RM500 price range?
b.) Recommendation in the RM500 to RM850 price range?

I'm pretty satisfied with sony XM4, problem is my ears get too hot after listening for 30 minutes. Can't do long hours. Comfort is a must. I've reduced my XM4 bass by -2 so I guess I don't need really a strong bass and prefer brighter sounding signature. I like it to be wireless so the requirement on being able to be driven by Fiio btr3k is also important.
*
Bright + comfortable = normally i would think of audio technica. Especially the AD series. AD500 or AD700 is within your budget, sounds bright but not fatiguing, super comfortable, and easily driven. Downside is they look massive if you're going to wear them on the go.

Sifus here might have better suggestions.

I think I forgot to put this in my requirement but since I will be using bluetooth receiver to drive the headphones, I would prefer to have a detachable 3.5mm jack. AD700 actually fits the requirements , only thing is it has a long non detachable cable.
*
Philips SHP9500 has detachable cables. Haven't heard one myself but reviews say they're neutral.

Hi, help me to choose between akg k712 or sundara. Mostly listening to 80s and 90s rock band like Metallica, pink Floyd, scorpions, queen n etc. Currently using Philips X2 at home and I have Sony wh xm3 for portable use and several chifi iem like blon bl03 and CCA c12 . For references, I like c12 sound more than blon and X2 more than xm3. For upcoming 12.12 the price for sundara will drop to rm1245 compare to rm1.8k for k712.
Btw for amp, planning to buy fiio k5 to pair with. Thanks.
*
I cant comment on the AKG K712 or the Sundara, but I also listen to Metallica, Pink Floyd, and Queen, and they sound great on the HD650. Just another option you might want to consider.

Hi guys, newbie here need some recommendations for headphones for daily usage:

needs to have:

(i)  good isolation because wfh and want to focus
(ii) comfortable for long hours wearing
(iii) portability would be nice but it's the least important feature.

For context, I tried my friends ATH-M40x and felt the sound was a bit flat(?) and not very impressive.

Budget is around RM500, but can stretch to 700 if needed.

I looked around and got the usual recommendations like ATH-M50x and DT770 80ohms. Only thing is i don't have a dac/amp so maybe i dont have the power to drive the DT770 80ohms properly?

However, I'm willing to buy a DAC/AMP in the future if the DT770PROs are truly better than the m50x. Will be only plugging in directly into laptop and phone (S10+ if it matters)

Any thoughts and advice will be highly appreciated.
*
If you can stretch a bit can get ATH M50XBT. Tick all the right boxes. Good midbass and treble. Isolation is great. And portable, even comes with a pouch. Battery life is great too, no need worry about charging often.

Comfort depends on your room temperature. It can get a bit sweaty if not in aircon room.

Just wanna ask, what would be good upgrade from HD598 & HD280 since I am using both headphone.

I am particulary looking at ATH-R70x, not sure if it will be good upgrade or I should go higher up in the tier? Budget around RM1,500 & I dont mind stretch a little bit.

Mainly my aim is to find a "jack of all trade" headphone that can cover most genre of musics

Currently have UD130 as Desktop DAC/AMP & FlioM7+E12A combo for on the go listening. Likewise, I am having Sony XBA-300/XBA-N3 for mobile listening.

Or I better off hold onto what I have now and save up for something more top tier.

What do you guys think?
*
How about the HD6XX? I'm selling one btw lol. Seeing that you're aiming for the R70X which is often compared to the HD650.

Oh yes, read it was compared to both. Just felt like R70x was under-appreciated in the internet as opposed to the like of 650/600.

Will look into your FS thread. Cant promise if I buy it or not.
Oh okay, will see see look look on your recommendation.

Saw that R70x is quite low profile. That i need ask if anyone had experience it before.
*
Nah no worries. HD600 falls within your budget as well, scales well with a good amp, and better suited to vocals. Less bass than HD650 but good enough if you're not into EDM.

This post makes me itch for the R70X. Last time was deciding between this and the HD600/6XX.

May I know what amp you're using for your R70X?

Yea, based on pics seem to be a confirmed variant of HD800. Our local Sennheiser sometimes sell for 5k+, so this needs to below 1k usd to be worth it. Otherwise might as well get local unit for the warranty.

Btw, first shipment got RM10 off for new user. brows.gif
But shipping time damn long for the shipping forwarder i use.

I am not eligible for the new USD10 off cos i had the account registered previously when I very close in buying HD6xx in 2019 lol.

Well does local Senn does always do promo? I see them tend to stick at fixed rate & the KLCC shop sales person is quite rude lol, at least sony at the other end still let you play around with the stuff on display lol.
*
Normally those 3.3, 4.4, 5.5 etc sales. So roughly once a month should have offer, but rotate between products, so not every month hd800 got sale.

Klcc u try find tall guy with ponytail, he was very helpful when i went there. Tried the hd600 on the HDV820 amp and it was amazing.
