Van Gaal is expected to try and make further signings before the window closes on 1st September, but he was not in the mood to be drawn on his potential moves in the market following the defeat and shifted the focus onto the cup exit.

Asked about further signings by Sky Sports, Van Gaal replied: "No, that is the same question that other colleagues have already put and we know exactly what we are doing.
"But it costs points and now also a title because we have lost in the Capital One Cup and that is disappointing", the Dutchman added.

United's season has gone from bad to worse after a sluggish Premier League start, but new boss Van Gaal insisted the problems are not endemic and are fixable.

"It's a matter of making errors at wrong moments," he said. "When you see the goals against us, I believe they were big errors that you cannot make.

"Then it was 0-2 and it was very difficult to come back into the game. In the second half we created a lot of chances and didn't have the luck to score. Then two more errors and it's 0-3 and 0-4."

Van Gaal named an almost unrecognisable line-up to the one that was held at Sunderland on Sunday, but he refused to blame any of the young players for the humbling defeat.

Indeed, the Dutchman called for more time to implement his philosophy before both he and his team can be judged.

When asked if he regretted his selection he said: "No, you have to analyse the problem and I've done that.

"We have nine injuries and had a very young team. I have seen them trying to do their utmost best so you cannot expect more from players.

"Fans have to believe in our philosophy, we are building a team which we cannot make in one month or even one year.

"It's very disappointing but I hope they maintain their confidence in our club."

There were moments when Powell showed glimpses of the qualities in his game. He struggled to make incisive passes like his team mates, but he made intelligent runs to receive the ball just outside the box and take shots.

He comfortably attempted shots with both feet and his strikes were taken with an element of surprise to suggest that the youngster has really honed his shooting ability.

With a side that is struggling to create chances, Louis Van Gaal could use Powell’s shooting range by bringing him from the bench against sides that defend deep and in numbers.

I think adjusting to new system ain't that easy.

Imo, theres nothing wrong with the formations. Its just players not adapting well to the formation. It takes some time.
