Do you sifus think it's still reasonable to invest in a 2008 Mac Pro and make it relevant again to today's standards? Need some enlightenment.

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Oct 7 2015, 10:16 PM) Thank you everyone for the advices. I truly appreciate it all. But I think I might have to disappoint everyone, and to inform that I finally acquired the machine. To be honest, I'm very very happy with my purchase. I COD-ed with the person just to check up on the item, and wanted to say no (with thoughts of everything that has been said about this machine) until I finally saw it myself. The machine is in pristine condition and being used by now close to 60 years old man for the past 6 years. It was so immaculate, and has been in his bedroom for the rest of the machine's life after purchase. Trade your 670 for 7970. Flash it to Mac Edition.I couldn't say no to this after I checked up and perform some Apple Hardware Test on the machine, and everything was ok go. The graphics card is definitely a drawback, but no signs of it being fried and also no flickering issues. The machine was a 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 2.8Ghz Intel Xeon with HD2600XT 256MB VRAM, and equipped with 8GB FB-DIMM 667Mhz DDR. And for the price that I got it (USD$320) which is solidly cheap, I'm well aware I need to not splurge so much for this machine. I will study and make sure the costs to run this machine as my media center will be minimal. Plus, I have a few SSDs lying around, I just need to fork out another 8GB of FB-DIMMs to make it a whooping 16GB, and a Mac Pro-tested graphics card, so that I will get the boot screen (which is a personal preference). This is whereby that I know I can purchase the GeForce GTX670 much cheaper, but without Apple EFI, it will boot with a blank screen. Please, advise me more on how to improve this whilst having it around. Now, my G5 has someone to talk to at home I recommend you to sell it as soon as possible. |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Oct 8 2015, 12:07 AM) I think I'm keeping it for my sister's kids to study around with when I'm done with it in the future, having a replacement for it, just like the Power Mac G5. I think after this, I might build my own rig due to the fact that I hate how the form factor of the current gen Mac Pro looks. Unless Apple changed their mind and introduce a new workstation-class desktop as good in terms of ergonomics as the 06-12 Mac Pros. Build a Workststion Grade Hackintosh ProDual Xeon LGA 2011-3 processors 4 Sticks of 4GB DDR4 for each processor GTX Titan 256GB SSD |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Oct 8 2015, 12:32 AM) That would be in my book. At this rate, I would have many computers at disposal. Wouldn't know what to do with my Alienwares and MBPs. Also, are you all excited with the new Surface Pro introduced by Microsoft? I think it's pretty slick. By the way, I'm kinda inclined knowing that you have a flashed for Mac GTX570 at bay lying around, do you have any use for it currently or in the future? Mind giving it away at a price if you no longer have a use for it? Might want to use it for a while due to the overly expensive 7970 at this currency exchange rate. No, my 570 was never flashed and it died after I tripped over it.Sell the Alienware and get a Mac Pro Early 2010 Surface Pro 4 is crap. Overpriced. Rather have Macbook Pro Entry Level or Surface Pro 3 |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Oct 13 2015, 11:01 PM) Haha you saw me lurking around at the server RAMs subsection. I just installed Airport card to my machine. Now it's running El Capitan 10.11. SSD seems to blaze the boot up and application processes in this machine. Now, I'm thinking of adding more memory on top of the 8GB, as well as a pc graphics card that is flashable with Apple EFI. I'm currently looking at Radeon HD5870 1GB GDDR5, something that is cheap and works. The Mac Edition of every graphics card almost doubles its price. Also, can you recommend me some 667Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM RAMS? They're very expensive locally. Went to my regular computer store in SG, and they quote me a price of almost MYR150 per 2GB piece. eBay as said. I recommend you to find the Mac version's PC counterpart and flash the BIOS to Apple EFI. Im running El Capitan too. |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Oct 13 2015, 11:20 PM) I'm a bit curious here, maybe you can enlighten me for a bit. Tech-spec wise, the Early 2008 Mac Pro (3.1) should use a 800Mhz FB-DIMM DDR2 and older Mac Pros (1.1,2.1), are equipped with the 667Mhz FB-DIMM DDR2. I'm confused because my clearly 2008 3.1 MP is running the 667Mhz Rams. Is it backward compatible? Sorry for the silly question. But it seems that the Ram sockets accepts lower ram ratings because mine is currently loaded with the 667s instead of the 800s. It's backwards compatible. I had a Mid 2009 MacBook which would boot with either PC2-533 or PC2-667Meanwhile my Early 2008 which supports only PC2-533 would not even POST with PC2-667 RAM |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Nov 11 2015, 04:08 PM) I have to say that the overall upgrade was spot on, and took just 2 minutes of my time. I have to say after using it for an hour now, everything seems to move much smoother. Processes like switching dashboards, opening up iTunes, Safari and Apple apps became instant. I personally recommend the upgrade for those especially who uses Pro Apps on their Mac Pro. It's not necessary for standard users like me because at previous 8GB/4GB, it was as good as it is, with little incremental, based on my usage. There's a hack I do to run 64bit Geekbench in Tryout mode. Not even a crack. Simple to do. You want to know?Hereby is the GeekBench 3 score, I had to use the trial version and it only allows 32-bit mode. I will be purchasing it to run the full 64-bit mode, and would love to see how my Mac Pro scores against it. I'm not much onto the numbers, but I have to say, the numbers are quite rationale as I compared it to other Mac Pro 2008 scores, as well as the 2010s. I'm very happy with this machine thus far, as it has achieved my beyond my expectations. I think the only thing that brings me down is the current graphics card. I will be lurking around to see which is the best graphics card to insert into this beast and I'm currently looking into the GTX970 Strix. Previously before, the RAM upgrade from 8GB to 16GB, my Mac Pro's Geekbench score was 97**. Till then. |
