QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Sep 15 2015, 05:42 PM) Yes, managed to grab this. Will go for viewing soon. What are the main things I need to check? Thinking of making this my main beast. Will want to upgrade it to be relevant with the year 2015 haha. Graphics card must go.SSD is a must. RAM Upgrade is necassary for professional apps otherwise, leave it Processor upgrade not necassary, replace the thermal paste. |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Sep 15 2015, 08:15 PM) I'm planning to acquire a 4GB video card, but still looking for the best value for money card that is compatible with the Mac OS X architecture. It comes with a 4GB Ram, might increase it to at least 16GB for my pro apps. SSD probably just for System (256GB) and HDD for applications and contents. Do you think the processor of an Intel Xeon 2.8ghz 8-core is reasonable enough right now in your opinion? Best bang for the buck Graphics Card for professional production is Titan Black if you can find one. It's around the same price as 980Ti but has 6GB VRAM. Your second option would be a used 980, they go for less than RM2000 nowadays and is the best bang for your buck.NVIDIA Cards are usually very less problematic as they have Official NVIDIA Web Drivers Strix 980 G1 980 You have the Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008) which is quite cheap to upgrade. E5642s is just not powerful enough for HD Rendering. Mac Pro 3,1 EFI firmware does not support any CPU that clocks higher than 3.2Ghz. Source: Mac Rumours So, X5482 is your best bet here. Here's the comparison. Doesn't show much difference but not harm to do so. Here's the link to the X5482s on eBay. Total is $95 or RM408.19 including shipping. Not a bad upgrade. RAM Upgrade? Your system probably come with 2 Sticks of 2GB RAM. So you have two slots left on each RAM board. Mac Pro only support ECC RAM You thought RAM Upgrades in Mac Pro were expensive? Think again. DDR2 ECC RAMs ARE CHEAPPPPPP. Here, have a look Hynix ECC RAM 30USD for 16GB. Shipping to Malaysia $8.95 Total 38.95USD or RM167.36 SSD? ALL OUT Samsung 256GB SM951 AHCI M.2 DA80mm PCIe Internal SSD - OEM MZHPV256HDGL-00000 USD 228.57 or RM982.10 including shipping and import taxes NGFF to PCIE 3.0 X4 for USD12 or RM51.56 OR Budget Samsung 840 Pro 128GB -USD 44.99+USD6.02+USD23.88 = USD 74.89 =RM321.78 or RAID 0 Samsung 840 Pro - USD89.98+USD6.02+USD23.88 = USD 119.88 = RM515.09 Samsung 840 Pro 128GB Total upgrade cost= RM ????.?? QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Sep 16 2015, 08:00 PM) Can't wait to venture on to my new "Projekt STRATOS". Will update here and probably on my Youtube Channel, for fun. Will need help on recommendations and advices from you both, too. RAM and Graphics Card is basically essential. If you don't mind 3GB VRAM, you can try HD 7970 Mac Edition. You get an EFI screen which is very useful when reinstalling OS or troubleshooting your Mac. RAM is cheap, get it. |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Sep 16 2015, 08:44 PM) To be honest, the idea of having this machine is basically to handle being my daily computer. I don't need it for music or digital production as I'm currently pursuing my masters degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Mostly from time to time, I might need to use bootcamp to access Windows 10 on the beast to run some engineering applications which require quite high-performance video card to render 3D components for instance Dassault System's Abaqus and SolidWorks. Probably, STEAM and Origin light gaming in between. So in my mind, right now I need to find a reasonable value for money relevant to my usage graphics card and of course RAM, which would be a clear purchase. Since the 16GBs are cheap, what about a piece of 8GBsx4? 5xx and 6xx series or known as the Kepler series is known to have native Apple drivers for them. The drivers are built by Apple for Kepler based Quadro but they are working fine. 7xx series and 9xx series acts the same way with NVIDIA Web Drivers. The reason of not having EFI screen is of course having PC BIOS, I think you can flash it to Mac BIOS but there's a limited choice of card and of course the risk.I'm practically waiting for El Capitan to be officially released, so then only I can decide, which graphics card driver are currently still being updated to work on the Mac Pro 2.8Ghz Intel Xeon. I think I need the EFI screen. Some working graphics card like the 680 is not officially supported for the Mac Pro but I heard it works, without the EFI screen, from black screen at boot up straight to the log in screen without the Apple logo. For 9xx series, hold it back. Nvidia has only released El Capitan Drivers untl DP8/PB7. Hold it back. I have a GTX570 that has native Apple Drivers support that I can lend you, but mind you, I dropped it once, you may have luck with it. 32GB RAM, 8GB Sticks. For Low price? No. For 250USD per stick? Yes, OWC site has it. You can of course, bump it to 24GB with 4GB per stick. That's going to cost you like 80 more ringgit which is a way more feasible solution Processors? Dont hold it back for engineering programs, go for it. Bite the bullet, once and for all. When you decide to find a new owner for it, you can sell it for a MUCH HIGHER price as well as it is pretty much speced out machine with 24GB RAM. Thats my advice for now. Also, new thermal paste and clean out the dust EDIT: Oh yeah, boot camp issues. Dont worry too much about it. Although I would recommend you to install it from a PC first. To reduce hassle to deal with boot camp. Cant express more hate with boot camp on unsupported but CAPABLE machines like the Mac Pro or Macbook Pro Early 2008 This post has been edited by Anonymous34: Sep 16 2015, 11:58 PM |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Sep 17 2015, 06:05 PM) Now before I touch into the Mac Pro. I'm trying to max out my Power Mac G5 before retire it from service. Looking for a SATA-II SSD now. Pretty hard to get in the local market. :/ And still super-expensive too. OCZ Vertex 2 is in mind. Pretty much any modern SSD is backwards compatible with Sata II.Iinm, the older revisions of the G5 is using only Sata I. Does the newer revision or Dual/Quad G5 has Sata II? Here's a topkek video of a topkek ssd in a topkek G5 This post has been edited by Anonymous34: Sep 17 2015, 06:49 PM |

QUOTE(zenix @ Sep 18 2015, 05:13 PM) i've never seen the internals of an intel mac pro before. Pretty Straight forward.how is the layout? easier for upgrading with pc parts? First Gen and Second Gen Different. First Gen the CPU socket is attached to motherboard. This makes the upgrade much tougher btw. RAM is installed differently on a sisterboardm Second Gen you can remove the entire CPU Tray to upgrade the CPU and RAM You have one PCIE x16 slot and 3 PCIx4 slot First gen you need to use molex to PCIE 6 pin power connector for powerful graphics card Second gen you have one proprietary connector on the motherboard that can provide second PCIE 6 pin power with a NON INCLUDED proprietary cable. Mac Pro Second Gen Revision 1 (Mac Pro 4,1) requires modified EFI firmware to use powerful CPUs not supported by Apple (not available in BTO configs) Second Gen Revision 2a and 2b has no such problem (Mac Pro 5,1) Optical drive installation is pretty straightforward except you need to remove the tray cover before installing otherwise it can't eject through the small opening. Mac Pro first generation uses Sata I, Mac Pro Second Generation uses Sata II for their optical drives. This post has been edited by Anonymous34: Sep 18 2015, 10:20 PM |

QUOTE(Kernkraft400 @ Sep 18 2015, 11:24 PM) @Anonymous34, All the best dude. But when it comes to the Mac Pro, if you need my help, just hit me up using PM. Will be glad to help out. Want to see the internals in person anyways.Just secured my shipment of Intel 320 SSD SATA-II 3gb/s 160GB. I have to be honest that it is very scarce. I had to contact my mate from SG and collect it at the checkpoint for this. I've been searching through local stores, and it's very rare for computer stores to still carry or stock in older drives. I can say that I've been to more than 10 stores inquiring and more through calls if they carry a straight on SATA-II drive and none of them have. I'm about to give today a rest, and do the installation and cloning of the drive to act as my OS drive tomorrow. Through a lot of reading, the Intel 320 is some sort of the best SSD drive plug and play that works for the Power Mac G5. Through reading also, I managed to gather that booting time can be halved but the main score is definitely the total performance of the machine while opening applications and fluidity. Will update my findings soon. Especially for those with Power Mac G5 owners who ought to give an extra boost for their beloved machines. |

QUOTE(zenix @ Sep 19 2015, 12:38 PM) from the looks of it, not much modification possibilities, just upgrading it to the max specs allowed. Processor.1. load up the RAM 2. convert to high capacity HDD for storage 3. convert to SDD for OS speed 4. the only modification would be a monster graphics card, not too sure if they support workstation class cards or top-end cards like 980/titan Graphics Card, any NVIDIA card will work. Anything from a Titan X to a Quadro will work with Mac Pro. Power supply, I recommend replacing it every month as it will suck a bunch of juice more then the rated output wattage. |
