anyone experience coolant temp changes after using different brand/grade of engine oil?

was using Ravenol 5w40 previously, and noticed my temp fluctuate less, currently using motul 300v 5w30 and it fluctuates more eventhough the max temp remains the same..

if you want to be particular on temps, perhaps should take oil temps.

personally didnt really have coolant temp fluctuations, just sit at middle.
from obd also 5-10ish degrees (80-90? maybe) up down depending on condition
*
thing is scangauge2 couldn't read the oil temps on my car, hence coolant temp is the only thing i monitor. mine fluctuates from 80+ to 90+ now with most of the time in 90 region when i'm driving, while previously was lower at 80+ region when i'm using ravenol EO.
Anyway, no biggie, just some casual observation of the changes, and wanted to know if anyone experience it too.

OBD based? most stock car do not have oil temperature/pressure (well afaik majority of car only detects where it's low pressure or not, no values included) monitoring.

you'll have to get a sandwich plate between the oil filter and have extra gauge.

that's what we've discussed a little few pages back.

=edit=
what car/engine anyways since you're willing to use 300v? quite rare i must say haha
*
yes, OBD based

ooo nice car thumbup.gif

btw ever thought of torque app on android/mobile? XD
*
Yeah, considered that, but wanted something that's permanently placed in the car and can display without much setting up. That's why I went with scangauge 2.

ah i see

btw what prompted you on the xw30 viscosity selection?

most people here would choose something thicker, especially when it comes to turbocharged engines.
checked your manual viscosity charts?

from the top of my head, evo x is on xw30 specification, while R35 GTR is on xw40
*
my manual states xw30/xw40 as the suitable range. not turbo charged btw, NA engine.. LOL blush.gif
xw30 does makes the car more rev happy, but again since i changed brand and grade at the same time, cant tell if the changes are due to brand or grade.

and yea those watery esters... very interesting stuff on the tachometer tongue.gif
*
nope, subaru do make NA engines for their bread and butter model ranging from 1.5/1.6/2.0.
this is the exact model

care for signature series and long OCI like 40k km/1 year? tongue.gif

i got UOA on first page and the detergents/additives/TBN is crazy lol
*
nahh.. i was offered the Amsoil XL for free, won it in a giveaway contest. not sure if i can top up for signature series though..

back to the 300v, noticed that the oil level went down noticeably (as warned and predicted by my mechanic, which claimed that the 300v is perfect for track, but not so good for daily drive, as it "evaporates" faster), so went for my oil change to finish up my 300v stock.
nothing beats fresh lubes..

heres the thing though, i would personally suspect that it's due to worn engine (considering the age of your car/that particular model) as i never had any oil loss on my 3rd 300v usage in a row(drained twice).

in fact during track, my engine oil only increased due to liquid expansion from heat and that's just mind boggling since that never happened on other car/lubricants sweat.gif

in fact the way how esters can deal with high temperatures, it is very unlikely that the 300v evaporated, more likely that it is leaking somewhere. (eg: the piston rings, and just combusted out from the engine)
*
I agree with the worn engine theory, and perhaps 5w30 is a tad too thin. Never had noticeable oil loss previously with other brand's 5w40. Maybe I shall try 5w40 300v in the future.

Let's see how this second trial of 5w30 300v goes.

honestly there isn't much solid ways to tell besides maybe a ph indicator paper to tell how acidic the oil has become and maybe visually inspect how viscous/thin the oil is compared to how it originally was.

feeling oils from your engine would be very detrimental to your personal health and i would advise doing so.

it should also not be honey like transparent as the oil obviously didn't do a good job in making sure your engine is clean. all my oil drains turns out pitch black after usage regardless of any brand/make so far.

if you want, you can try building a high temperature resistant filtration unit or something of the sort, and maybe have it filtering in between the drain pan or something during an OCI, see if you can visually inspect anything.
if you could, consider it being a damn serious case as the wears on my UOA are not visually inspect-able.

it's pretty much microscopic levels lol.

+1 on the oil color, I rarely stretch beyond 5k for my oil change, and the oil color is always black. Mine's a weekend ride, so I'll change the oil every 6 months regardless of the mileage, which is usually just barely hitting 5k. I can gradually see the color turn darker when I check the oil level once every few weeks.

Just poured Amsoil signature series 10w-30 into my engine. First impression after a short drive (30+ km), my car feels less rev-happy compared to running 300v, and some how it seems to take longer to pull up to 5k rpm.

changed my engine oil from Ravenol -> Motul 300v (twice) -> Amsoil Signature series 5w-30, then now back to Ravenol 5w-40, and the immediate differences i can felt:

1. my engine is back to its revvy nature, maybe not as revvy as when i'm using 300v, but much better than Amsoil.
2. the cold start issue is also gone, an issue i encountered with Amsoil, but not with 300v or Ravenol
3. water temp seems to be more stable now, this is an issue i encountered with both 300v and Amsoil, but not seen on Ravenol

guess i'll be sticking with Ravenol from now on.

+1... I used to be sceptical as I've not heard of this brand before, and this happens to be the only brand carried by my mech, that's why I went ahead to try motul and Amsoil. I'm now a believer.

I initially didn't know that my cold start issue is caused by Amsoil, until it miraculously went away after my oil change.
