What I can say is SL is just less environment friendly than its successor. Performance wise won't differ much.
Just sharing....API SM and SN only allow maximum phosphorus content of 800ppm, where API SL allows maximum of 1000ppm.
Even though API SL has higher phosphorus content (anti wear agent), it does not mean it would provide better wear protection.
API SM and SN have better wear control property, allowable average cam wear (ASTM D6891) is maximum 90 micron comparing to API SL's 120 micron.
*Phosphorus is a substance which would "poison" catalytic converter, engineers found out that higher content of phosphorus in oil will reduce working life of catalyic converter.
