It mentioned how to measure dynamic range,

The last keypoint i dont really understand what chart?(historgram?) how to determine EV in histogram?
How to measure dynamic range:
u cant know EV from histogram.
there is a info. button on your camera, when in picture preview mode, you press the button, you will see a graph like this
user posted image

histogram give you the idea of the bright or dark pixel of your picture

even thought saying when histogram at middle is correct exposure, but that still depend much on your subject. there is no golden rule saying that your histogram must at middle to get correct exposure picture.

Hi guys, new year new mission : My first (and hopefully last) wedding day shoot for my bro in law (as I only have 1 Bro-in-law)

It will be the typical Chinese wedding day, morning with him to fetch the bride and night wedding in restaurant.

I'm intensely debating on the gear to bring and would like your opinions:

1 Canon 550D + YN568EX + Tamron 17-50 for the usual situations.
2 Canon 60D + 430Ex+ with either the 35mm F2 or 50mm F1.8?

Recently I have come to expect very less of the 35mm in dim situations Auto focus and really kills my mojo. I imagine the shorter length allows for closer portraits (Restaurants)

With the 50mm I also expect nothing in AF but will the longer reach be useful and enable slightly better (undistorted) portraits? I suppose a good way would be to carry everything but I really want to avoid lens change. Or should I just go Rambo with 1 lens and enjoy the low weight?

FYI above is all the gear I can probably get / carry.
*
just to say, with APS-C shooting wedding, 50mm will have very limited chances to perform, something like u stand 2-3m away from the ppl, still only will get 4 or 5 ppl in the frame only. if you need to shot group picture with 10++ ppl, you need wider angle lens, considering limited space inside restaurants

wide aperture not really useful in wedding shot, you need to turn the aperture smaller for more dof, and compensate with flash, maybe few shot for some artistic purpose you only shot below f2.8

for me Canon 60D + 430Ex + tamron 17-50 is good to go
if you do not afraid your neck broken, you can carry another body with 35mm lens for backup

An article to why people shouldn't underestimate the kit lens
http://petapixel.com/2015/03/18/cheap-kit-...ak-kids-lenses/
*
somehow, ppl nowadays tend to being pixel peep rather than focus on their skill, and subject. the kit lens is actually great tool to polish up the skill.

if the article do not mention those pictures take using 18-55mm, many will ask what lens they using

oh more than nowadays, people have been pixel peeping for ages.
*
last time, when camera image sensor density is low, and sensor capability not as good as now, it is understand to pixel peep because what the see on screen is at max resolution already. but for now, i do not see the point to pixel peep on a 10 MP picture, end up only upload to FB laugh.gif

I'm agree with you.

It's ridiculous that 'we' (as in folks in this canon thread), are always debating and convincing others to agree on a subject or matter that is very subjective. Different people have different priorities, I mean c'mon man, get your priorities straight, why bother forcing others to agree with you.

Speaking about gears, we all knew that "skills that matter, gears come second". I actually feel sick when every time people come on showing his/her works saying that "my kit lens can do that, why bother getting L". It's a personal preference no? Like when you find limitations on your kit lens then you'll think about upgrading or what. There's nothing for the others to judge about, if you think you're ready and having the budget there, what's stopping you?

No offenses alright, just sharing my thoughts, please don't flame me biggrin.gif

lol.. i find it pretty funny la when some sifus comment gear isnt evrerything..even kit lens can do wonder shot bla blabla or critic other ppl why soo focus on gear..

then when we ask what u use for ur daily shooting, L lens, art lens pop out from his bag.

not criticising laa bt if gear nt so imp then y not stick to kitlens like wht some of the sifus will comment over here.
*
if you have clear path in you mind, i want get this, yes just go to get the gear, you already know what you need

we have to make it clear, as we go thru the path, we know that better gears do help for better outcome, but that not mean better gears= good image. a lot of ppl do no know what they need, and asking for lens recommendation, buying high end lens, end up those lens getting sleep in their dry box

many ppl saying: what gear you use to shot your picture? i am using kit lens, that's why i cant shot good picture......

camera gears are expensive, and there always some new comer asking what gear should i get, what gear should i upgrade to...... that could be a mislead to new comer spending unnecessary $$. that where the statement gears isn't everything comes in.

remember the 1st day when switch from DC to DSLR, the 1st day when switching kit lens to some better lens. there sure will have in this mind: wah, i can take better picture now...... end up, you find the outcome is similar, sometimes worse.

anyway, if have enough water, one can try those high end gears, no one stopping them from doing so, but just to remember gears help u shot better picture, gears do not shot better picture for you

just a suggestion, no need to take whole plate in your picture, try to zoom closer, may crop off part of the plate, that could make viewer focus on your subject

Thanks much to the three of you for those suggestions. Here's the situation for now:
I have two batteries. I tested those batteries one by one after fully-recharge it which to me it should be normal as there was no blinking indicators during charging those batteries. But sadly, after tried to switch on using both batteries - the camera still won't turn on  cry.gif  cry.gif  cry.gif

I am currently in a tight budget while waiting for pay to come in. So do anyone of you know where is a good place to give my camera and batteries some checking at cheap or affordable price?

And at the same time - the problem here should be within the body kit, the lens, or just those batteries that may be totally drained out?

cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif
*
no blinking mean the battery fully charge? or the charger do not charge the batterh?

another thing to check is the contact places of battery and your body, maybe there are some dirt blocking the connection between battery and body.

if not you might have to send for warranty claim

Hi guys, seeking your advice. I would like to purchase a second-hand camera with budget less than RM1K as I'm a novice in photography. I had an eye on EOS 50D + EF 50mm f 1.8 II.

Wondering if this camera is relevant nowadays, or perhaps you can suggest a better spec for my budget?

Thanks in advance for your advice.
*
it depend on your preference. I still using 50D now, and it still a very capable camera.

oh no.. not too familiar with those CF card. Is this easily available like SD card?
*
not as easy to find as SD card.
and there is risk using CF card, as it use pins, there is risk the pin will bend when remove and insert the CF card to slot ( i got 1 card reader gone due to 1 pin bent)
card reader as well, not all card reader support CF card
but as others state above, SD card is more convenience comparing to CF card, anyway, i am using USB cable to transfer my pictures.

*
if u get 2nd hand, u may able to get body only. both model able to capture video

Back to canon I hear canon is going to release a 50mm f1.8 stm IS lens.  Wonder if it will replace nifty fifty and be really cheap.
*
wont be cheap if there is IS feature on the lens

A72 is very impressive too.
If i havent read so much about 6D, and did a bit more in A72, i think i might buy A72 instead haha.

Light to travel, FF, and all for one lens. Only 1 bad thing is flash...
*
that piece build in body image stabilization is impressive, but the lenses going to burn a big hold on your wallet

55-250mm or 70-300mm zoom lens is better? heard that 300mm doesn't have IS? hw many ver that they have?
*
u referring to 70-300mm or 70-300mm L ?

55-250 is EF-S lens, you only can use on APSC sensor. This is a basic tele lens, the lens mount is made of plastic.
if you not sure want to go tele photoshot or not, you can try with this lens, as this lens is cheap, i got mine 2nd hand at rm600, and it sit in my dry box for most of time tongue.gif

70-300mm is EF lens, comes with 3 stop IS as well:
http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/len...70-300_4-5p6_is

there is another 70-300mm L

Dear sifus, im traveling soon in end september. Going Japan!

Just wanna ask which gears to bring for traveling?

Im planning to bring 6D+24-70, 50mm, and a Yong nuo flash

Thats all! What u guys think?

50mm is to equiped for night photography.

Yong Nuo is for just in case night photography potrait, imagine 1/30 shutter speed(major streelights still able to capture) then just a bit of flash for face coverage

Good enough?

Additional question. since im going to get 100mm, i seriously thinking 100mm is not a good lens for traveling... advise me if im wrong
*
no need flash, most of time 24-70mm already enough for your shoots
