Any of you really own/Take care of these before?

My father recently picked up 2 of these babies. Cause too small to throw back into wild. He's thinking of take care of them until grow bigger.

My sis last time got adopt 1 b4 but the authorities says its illegal to have one... and no licence will be provided.

Ain't these animal carry SARS virus? China is brutally mass killing these cats because they detected the source of virus from these cats.

I'm not sure about the local authority allowing you to safe keep it but you can try hand it over to Zoo Negara. They might help you on solving the problem.

Don't bother giving it to Zoo Negara. They will kill it. Im telling u from experience in this trade that any animal that goes there usually ends up dying coz the people there don't really know how to take care of babies.

If it's not weaned yet, you need to bottle feed it with a special milk formula for baby cats available from certain petshops. it's pretty expensive but if u want to know i'll tell u where to get it.

It is illegal to keep any local species of mammal including civet cats in Malaysia. However, many people keep them quietly.

we used to get all sorts of animals from leopard cats to slow lorises from time to time. But for the record, i no longer deal with wild caught mammals coz it's really cruel as the orang asli usually steal them from the mothers.
Some of the animals that's been at my doorsteps before.

Nah getting animals like these has nothing to do with where I live. But i no longer deal with wild-caught mammals so no point asking.

Although I can't totally disagree with what you said, but I also can't totally agree what you said too. Though they might end up being killed due to lack of skill or whatsoever. I still believe there is some animal enthusiastic person around in the Zoo. Though I don't hope much from Malaysian Zoo Keeper... but I still believe there is someone around. So please be more optimistic rather than judged them base on your past experience.

If you do seriously want to return them to the wild, make sure you train them to suit the wild. Once an animal get used to domestic life, it will be very hard to return to the wild. Hunting, instinct to avoid being hunt, making nest and etc etc. You have to work extra hard on training them... you have to really study about their living and train them up whenever they are ready.

Your responsibility is heavy than anyone else. I hope you understand if you were to take this responsibility.

If you have no plan at all, you are better killing them off or give them to the Zoo (At least there is some hope). Why I say killing them off? Because if you don't kill them, later, you realise them to the wild without training is equivalent of killing them later in oppose to now.

Actually I know the zoo negara people because I've been supplying them animals. It is not a matter of judgement - reserve ur words carefully -i've dealt with them over time and i know them inside out. If u think u believe there is someone enthusiastic enough... well all i can say is u havent been to the real world of zoo-keeping in Malaysia. Don't believe me? have u actually send any animals there before? Do u know anything about what they do there? Well i think not.

Don't worry it is not that hard to raise them. It's much safer in your hands than with the zoos. If u have no confidence, then let me know i will guide u.

u may know them but u duno them all. i voulunteer there. i found out a lot of things that people outside dunno & dun choose to care any less to know. there's a few very passionate people in there. well to work in the zoo it self is already a good start. it has came to my knowledge that there are alot of animals that they are not farmiliar with. unlike other zoos world wide, there's no such things as animal training or what so ever. in the zoo, mayb the top ppl is bz makin money that they do not take the trouble to care bout their own charge. this job is usually up to the seller or the zoo keeper to find out for them self. like i said there's no training provided in the local zoos. where does the keepers learn? from those wednesday classes conducted by the zoo? those classes i attended is more like a history lesson bout the zoo(i went to the class bout elephants & primates) how the zoo changed etc etc. it is then up to the sellers to actually teach them. they continue to remain "STUPID & NOT-GOOD-ANIMAL-KEEPERS"because people do not teach them. since when does a big company actually go to the zoo to teach the peeps there? well...recently there is lar...dr. brandy barr was there. if u think bout it properly, can a bunch of zoo keepers hog a computer a few hours a day google-ing bout a new animal that they got, looking for care sheets? it has also come to my knowledge that some information supplied by certain suppliers tends to be misleading.( this i dunno, a contact in the zoo told me)

please. the zoo has already a very bad reputation. it does not need help to get any worst then it is now.

*sigh* I dont want to argue with u, or anyone else. Obviously u seem to have some kind of hidden agenda between ur words. Which is why ur reputation precedes u. It would be redundant to reason with u.
Little misfit, if you wish to heed what they say about the zoo, please send the babies to zoo negara and let us all know what happens in a few months.

its not even bout the civet cats anymore. as fas as i'm concerned. u have quite a good reputation too. also, i noticed that u talk in in convoluted sentences. state ur point clearly please. i might miss read it again. wink.gif

anyways. back to the zoo... u dun seem to read properly what i said & ment. perhaps i should type in double spacing new times roman font pt. 16? i have a feeling that SeGi Exibition thread is coming up again. better keep my guns.

i said the zoo is like that because its staffs are un-educated. i think that they do put in an effort. but then when there's no one there to offer advise or help them they aint gonna make it. i do not say that they are good keepers. i only say there's a few passionate keepers. that's all...perhaps i would bold it.

Ok, to put it simply, there ARE people who care about the animals who work in the Zoo. But due to lack of training, info and mayb financials, they can't really do much and are almost as ignorant as the ones that don't care.

Correct me if I'm wrong. tongue.gif

If the zoo is such a bad place... then there shouldn't be a zoo.... as far as I know, the zoo here lacks a lot of support. They are providing the best they can with the knowledge they have.

I still believe certain wild animals, the zoo should handle... well, I have sent a wild bird to the KL Bird Park before after I nursed it back to health.... sometimes certain animals need the pros in this.

i believe PASSIONATE and EDUCATED are 2 totally different words with totally diff connotations. Being passionate doesn't necessarily mean being educated...and vice versa. However, passion if it is indeed authentic will be a driving force to pursue education (formal or informal). So if someone is indeed passionate i believe he/she will be self motivated and strive to learn more...and this doesn't happen overnight.

In large institutions like zoo's it is inevitable to have a mix of ppl who are really passionate about animals and those who are there just to cari makan. But i guess its human nature to blow up the negative rather than to emphasize the positive. Sad but true..

yes. true on that word. passionate is diffrent. but like i said. they lack resorce. remember that time is also a resorce. who would not wanna be good in something? they can be cleaning elephant shit for the rest of their life i dun care. but some of them actually take the effort to make a trip to thailand & learn from those people there. imagine. how much does a un educated/qualified zoo keeper earn to do that?

thats a point to ponder. sorry lar i a bit harsh there just now. no hard feelings yeah hans...its a forum.

Ok... this is not about Zoo Negara. It is about you. Certainly you may know most of them, you may not know all of them, don't you? So if were to correct the word "judge", what word should I use?

Like I said, be more optimistic. If you really know them inside out, surely you can pin point their mistake or perhaps you don't bother at all.

I'm neither breeder nor supplier so I won't be dealing with them. Perhaps 1 day, I will get myself a volunteer job in there to observe whether they really worth condemning.

Why don't you share your bad story then?

One of the reasons they don't have really educated ppl taking care of the animals is because of the measly pay...My friend just applied for a job there and they are paying rm550 a month for zoo keepers. Doesn't sound very enticing does it? Mostly because they lack funding since its under the Malaysian Zoological Society. They rely on funding from institutions such as Maybank etc....

It is easier to critisize than to actually lift a finger to help make things better. I believe we are all guilty in this issue some time or another..

five years ago i released a juvenile civet i caught in my house in Bukit Gasing. there was a family of civets living in my rooftop, and this one happened to be found wandering around my porch at night, so i took a cat carrier and enticed it in with a banana. but it kept hissing and getting too stressed up i took it off to Bukit Gasing the next day. Now the family is still up there in my rooftop beams making noises at night, like birds twittering biggrin.gif .

civet cats are getting increasingly used to human presence, but they do not allow themselves to be seen that easily.

If discussion about keeping it is forbidden, i don't see the purpose of just discussing only about civet in this thread. This is Pets Wonderland, not Animal Planet. I don't think the civet is qualified as a pet, unless the threadstarter is going to keep it while seeking knowledge from this sub-forum. So this thread should be moved to Kopitiam maybe for further discussion instead? Just my two cents.

Well, the thread starter came here with a problem. Yes, keeping a civet cat as a pet is illegal but then he is coming here for advise. We all are pet people here, we have compassion for animals. If it was moved to Koptiam, I can bet it would become a spam thread.... where everyone would just put unhelpful stuff like eat it or something....

Thread starter did say

"My father recently picked up 2 of these babies. Cause too small to throw back into wild. He's thinking of take care of them until grow bigger."

So it could mean his father would like to let them go back into the wild... of course that is uncertain since now the civet cats would probably be used to human interaction already.

Well, civet cat is not a pet but discussion on how to care for it in the time being is allowed for now since thread starter found the civet cats and not went out to find them.

Anyway, will keep this thread open for another day or 2, if nothing helpful comes up, we will close the thread.

How to deal with it for now... but not discuss bout keeping it in the long term tongue.gif ... coz we can't keep it as a pet. Already people here have said hand it over to the zoo or wild animal santuary... well, see how... can discuss but the civet cat and how to deal with it(temporary caring) but not keep it long term.

hey thanks mod! i think the case will be dealt with soon... my father constructing a shelter of them soon on the forest opposite the house. And we do understand that they are WILD animals. And not planning to keep them in the house forever.

Temparary caring them until both learned to eat fruits. Only one will eat. another wont eat even when putted in their mouth.

Emm.. parents found them in a middle of golf course... maybe someone caught them earlier and then changed their mind.

And here are the pictures

Just that? nothing for them to climb? you gotta make them learn how to hunt.

but i would suggest you to call zoo negara and ask them for assistances. they know more than your parents.

the way they're running in the house... seems they're more grown than we expect. i can safely say they'll climb in no time. There's plenty of fruits trees around the house.

we'll provide fruits for them at their shelter for the meantime

heading to the vet today... thanks you the advise.. if any problem we'll call the animal dept.
