Why sell the 10400mAh Mi Power Bank at only RM 36?

So, are the Mi Power Banks a gimmick? Not so. It’s in fact a very brilliant piece of marketing strategy from Xiaomi. Even during their early days of marketing promotion, Xiaomi’s co-founder, Mr. Li Wanqiang was asked on how much they should sell a can of coke. And he replied, ““If we do it, we do it fierce. Make it 0.1 yuan!”
In the same way, selling Xiaomi’s 10400mAh power banks at RM 36 is really “fierce”. And no doubt, they definitely sold out their fifteen thousand units of Mi Power Bank within a few hours, just like how their flagship Mi 3 quad core smart phone, going for USD 300, sold out within minutes of introduction.

Would Xiaomi’s fierceness cause them to continue selling their power bank units at a loss, to serve as a marketing tool for their smart phones? It is hard to tell, but for now, it is a working strategy. By selling at a loss, they create a word of mouth marketing, just like how Air Asia did when they started and needed the exposure to disrupt the market and gain market share.
Do consider the following figures. Let’s say if Xiaomi makes about RM 100 to 150 per hand set, while loses RM 20 to 30 per power bank sold. But by selling their 10400mAh Power Banks at only RM 36, they create a massive of the word of mouth campaign for free. With that sacrifice and the fact that they still sell about 10,000 pieces of smart phones each round, it rounds up to making them about RM 900k gross profits each time they do so.

In comparison, competitors like Samsung does roadshows and advertises on billboards, magazines and takes full-page colour spreads in newspapers, which bumps up the marketing costs. Of which, it would make it harder for Samsung to compete in price. This compounds Samsung’s problems of shrinking sales as they get pounded on the premium market by Apple, and on the low-end market by Chinese handset makers.

don't think they sell the powerbank at a loss, more like break even price, the lower price achieved by larger volume, by selling online on their official website they know they can sell alot more than other brands.

for affortable consumer, they got $$$ in pocket, however xiaomi has always no stock, then they will shift to other brands.

Xiaomi do have limited stock as its still have to compete to source chips and parts from the same source as Samsung and others. If they sell by normal channel, they still have only 10K stock at hand but with flash sales, they can wipe their stock out, create publicity, creating "artificial" demands (yes limited quantity can pull in customer that otherwise would not consider it) and finally save on distribution profit sharing AND lowered the price at the same time. It's great marketing with limited stock.

Been wondering why with same galaxy note 2/s4 charger, one of my 10k battery heat up when charging the pb. The other pb with same type of note 2 charger is still cool. Then finally realise one of the charger is super hot, still charging but very hot. Immediately ran down to buy another original note 2 charger at RM60. Plug in the heated battery, after a while it cool down the same with the other pb.

So for those not in the know, the 10K battery when charging is always cool, not even warm. So if it started heating up even a bit, watch out, it might also not be the batt but the charger.

Wondering if that charger is the cause of my S4 batt life getting much shorter recently, spoiling my S4 batt after a year.

Both of them original, bought from trusted phone dealer earlier. Actually the spoiled one comes original from my S4.

The new adapter, I just buy from a phone store, now that one don't know original or not. It does comes with a huge Samsung note2 box and the seller assure me its original Note 2 charger.

It looks exactly like my other 2 charger tho and the plastic covering sticking around the charger itself looks the same as the other Note 2 charger I have (the old undamaged charger definite original, take from Note 2 phone as my old seller does not have additional S4 charger stock, thus take from one of his existing phone).

Yep, I still a tiny bit worry if its really original coz cannot differentiate them even if they're fake and current unit is not bought from my trusted phone seller.

No. Add to cart is not enough. If it is sold out it will be gone from cart.

You need to add to cart, checkout, fill in address and hit 'place order'. Then only you got the item. You may pay later within 12 hours.

i dont think they have so many 10,000 powerbank

It could the 6months offer they have total 10,000 powerbanks

Every sales they can just let go 500 units and no one can proof that they have sold 10,000.

Its a marketing stunt.

On website say 5,000
In the system say 500 units and it sold out in 38 seconds

Then they will advertise on their facebook and website sold 5,000 units sold in 38 seconds

the original samsung chargers and cable are not the best quality.

My samsung phone cable after 4 months spoil already

My old old nokia phone cable after 10 years still works fine.

They might not be the best, true, but I doubt they will explode like those oem brands sometimes do. My s4 adaptor is not often used, still spoil after a year but the note 2 adaptor has been in constant used (charging everything from phone, pb to kindle), so far working well. So it really depends on luck but branded original stuff should have better qc than the unknown oem. That is why I'm willing to spend more for it.
