Hard-modding Gallery
===========================

I think this section is lacking something. I can see a lot of disscusion about cooling, but hard-modding is nowhere to be seen.

So maybe you guys have done something to your hardware....
replacing capacitor, voltmods, replacing components.....then post it here and show us your leet soldering skill.
flex.gif

Just give us a brief description of what you've done and show us the pictures drool.gif

So, let me be the first one to post (there'll be more coming icon_idea.gif )

This is my moded Antec PSU. All the voltage rails is now adjustable. The real true powah!!!! laugh.gif

It's a very nice work done. smile.gif

Did you adjust a maximum value for your GPU and Memory frequency?

If I come near your computer, my itchy hands might turn both the knobs of your graphic card to the maximum.

I learn all this in the world of cyber space.....with a lot of dead mobo and cards icon_idea.gif
Yeah...the GC will get hotter, so better cooling is needed. I use watercooling on my card.

Nah...my pot is inside the casing. When I close my side panel, you won't be able to touch it laugh.gif .
The ones with the external pot is mADmAN's card. He's a very lazy guy...... nod.gif (@mADmAN: cool bro laugh.gif )
That's the highest stable frequency that I can get. Maybe I need some better cooling to get higher.

I'll post some more voltmod and recapping pic later. Common people....I wanna see your mods....maybe I should change the title to "Shah81 Hardmodding Gallery" sad.gif

The highest speed that I got was 364/540 with 2134pts in 3dmark03. But the card is dead now......(R.I.P in Silicon Heaven cry.gif )

I learn all of these on my own by reading and experimenting but you at least need some basic electronics (V=IR ?? icon_idea.gif ). If I can do it, so can you thumbup.gif

Wooow there....It's not as easy as that. It takes time to figure out how to mod a card because different manufacturer uses different circuits/components and I do need to do some research icon_idea.gif .

Unless you find a specific guide on how to mod your card, I cannot do it for you ...sorry..... unless you lend me your whole rig for a few days because I don't have a PCIE system to test it laugh.gif

This is a little out of topic. Maybe you can use PM next time smile.gif

Use any heatsink that you like as long as it fits...but watch the weight. You don't wanna bend your card.

Still remember that moded FX5200. I burned an IC when I set the Vmem to 3V. Search the web for the IC and found it at Farnell. But during the desoldering process, I rip a few soldering pads. So this is what I do.......

And if you are wondering, the card works. But then I soldered back the voltmod and start overclocking again. This time I killed the card for good. I think I fried the ram at 3.1V laugh.gif

Here's some more. This time it's a capacitor replacement for my friend's Leadtek Geforce 4mx. The card uses the crappy GSC caps and 5 of them became bloated. Replace it with a Panasonic 6.3V 2200uf.
This cap is gigantic but I have no choice because thats the only caps I have in my box and I'm damn lazy to go hunting for caps. Have to solder one of the caps to the back of the card because it won't fit between the caps anymore.

Look at the size different blink.gif

Yeah sure. Open up a new thread and post a high resolution pic of your card front and back. But there a some prerequisite....you got to have a multimeter and know how to operate one. Please google around for info regarding voltmodding and read it to familiarize yourself with voltmodding.
To be honest with you, you won't get much from the FX5200 tongue.gif

Some guide from VR-Zone...errr but the pictures are missing. CLICK ME
There are also tons of other voltmod guides there. Be sure to check it out too. You might learn a thing or 2.

AGP Current Booster Mod.

Actually I got the idea from Shamino's PCI Express Current Booster Mod. After reading the article, I was wondering if it was possible to do the same on an AGP system. So I downloaded the AGP slot pinouts and start modding.

Here's a quote from Shamino's article:

QUOTE
The following modification is a current booster mod for the PCI Express slots on your motherboards. This will potentially increase the current that the PCI Express slot can supply for your display cards, thereby allevating the power barrier for the cards that do not come with power connectors.

Just replace the PCI Express slot with AGP Slot tongue.gif

Remember my 9550GT. When I bump the Vgpu over 1.6V, I have to crank up my 3.3V rail to 3.5V to get it stable in 3dmark03. Later I found out that the 3.3V rail on the card will droop around 0.2V during high load ( I measure this at the mosfets on the card ) although the 3.3V output from the PSU is actually stable.

After the mod, I can now bump the Vgpu over 1.6V while my 3.3V rail is set at 3.4V (I always keep my 3.3V at ~3.4V rolleyes.gif ) and the readings at the mosfets will only droop around 0.06V max during high load.

The AGP slot cannot provide enough current for power hungry cards. Thats why cards like 9800 and 6800 have power connectors on them. For cards like these, this mod will not be beneficial because the extra current is pumped through the connectors. But for cards without the power connectors, you might get some improvement in your overclock espescially if you voltmod.

For my 9550GT:

I always play with low-end stuff. No money to buy midrange stuff or even thinking about high-end stuff.
To me, voltmodding a high-end card is pointless. They are already powerful as they are but a little bit of OC won't hurt laugh.gif
Imagine frying a 7950 GX2 when a voltmod goes wrong sweat.gif

Wow Bro Shah,

now im really thinking of voltmodding my PSU and 9550 biggrin.gif

hehehe.... but as soon as they are out of warranty biggrin.gif

Sweet Mods u have there, was thinking of modding my NF7-S RAM VOLT. it only goes up to 2.9v in bios, maybe can crank up to 3.3v for BH5 chips. ?

what do u think ?

The easiest way to get 3.3V is to take the 3.3V output of your PSU and feed it to the ram. But it wont be adjustable anymore. You'll get 3.3V all the time smile.gif

Here's an example:

This is something not really related to voltmod. It is a pump relay for watercooling users. I've sold a few of these units to forumers here.

Anyway...
Shah, do you know how to find the best variable resistor for my freaking fast NIDEC DELTA V?

If can, please state how to find and where to find it... icon_question.gif

And another thing, how do i connect it to the wires?
Which colour is for which pin on the variable resistor?

There are 4 wires...
Green, Yellow, Red, and Black...

Allngap said that the black and red are used for power
[Red for +VE & Black for -VE]

I've already asked allngap and he said, the extra 2 wires [Green & Yellow] is for connecting to a variable resistor to control the fan speed...

This is some information for my fan:

refer to the -34 series as the nidec TA450DC's model number is C34262-34

in this case the yellow wire is the RPM sense as usual while the green is for the low/high voltage sensor

To be honest, I don't know what value of resistance to use. Since you already asked allngap and he knows this stuff, why don't you refer to him. nod.gif

Any type of variable resistor should do, preferably the ones that looks like a volume control knob.....easy to turn laugh.gif

You can buy those variable resistor at Jln Pasar usually around RM1~RM2. A little tip.....don't say variable resistor when you ask the sales person, use the word potentiometer a.k.a volume control. laugh.gif

Easiest way to slow your fan down....use 5V or 7V rolleyes.gif

Potentiometer...
Noted that...
5Volts - 7Volts...

Can't do that, coz it's too slow, it's the same like i'm using my old Thermaltake Smartfan... 73CFM maybe [For 7Volts]

While on 5Volts, it's like i'm using my vantec spectrum 120MM uv led...

Actually I have a 4.0A prototype ( brows.gif ) fan controller that I build for fun. But I never tested its full potential. Don't have any powerful fan with me. The most powerful I have is an NMB 120mm fan that suck 0.35A laugh.gif doh.gif

But when you start playing with higher amps, the heat load gets bigger and you'll start seeing big heatsinks attach to the regulator.

well....ive got FOUR Delta FFBs for u to test simultaneously dude.... see if the controller can handle all of it at one go brows.gif

Regarding your last question on how to get 9V.....

You can use a 7809 voltage regulator. This regulator can supply max 1A, so it should be fine for your fan.

I'll put picture of the prototype later (bateri kamera habis).....but the design is not that efficient happy.gif

coz voltage regulator might not work with the FFBs i have... i tested the fans and they work at 7v... but 5v mampus... was wondering if PWM might be able to bring it lower...

besides.. i was reading online that pwm doesnt produce as much heat as regulator

Oh...in that case, it should work for your FFBs since we are turning the 12V on and off. We only control the frequency but the voltage will always be 12V.

But 4 FFBs......3A X 4 = 12A sweat.gif sleep.gif

Yeah can be done and components should be available at jalan pasar. But a single channel with 15A.....that's like building an amplifier already shocking.gif laugh.gif

The best method is to build a 4 channel controller with 5A each so you can control the fan individually. A little bit faster on the CPU but a tad slower on the HD.....keeps everything cool at the right speed icon_idea.gif

I cut those ramsink from a cpu heatsink I bought for RM5 at lowyat second hand shop.....dunno what the heatsink is for laugh.gif
Benches later, need to sort out somethings first. It seems the GPU is not a really good batch.....need a lot of voltage to get up to speed sad.gif
The DDR2 is preety good. It's a Samsung 3.3ns ram rated at 300MHz. At 2.0V, I manage to squeeze 340MHz out of it artifact free.....with the help of my monster heatsink.

Ayoo....mine is 3.3ns only....rated 300MHz max cannot do much cry.gif
Still having problems with my AGP slot. When I increase the voltage, the 3.3V rail will go like crazy on the card, but when I measure directly from PSU everything is OK.....I guess my mobo is not supplying enough current to the AGP slot since I already remove the AGP current booster mod.
Maybe need to supply 3.3V directly to the card from the PSU....... icon_idea.gif nod.gif

Sorry for the late reply....

Every graphic card can be voltmodded. You just have to find out how. I'm not sure how to voltmod a gforce mx440 because I never have one.

But if you have some pic of the card, we can start from there smile.gif

Have you guys seen a 9550XT with a power connector??? I have one in my rig brows.gif

That's a modded floppy power connector. Instead of supplying 5 & 12V, it is now supplying 3.3 & 5V (modded from the psu). 3.3V is for the Vgpu regulation circuit and 5V is for the Vdd regulation circuit. Both supply line is soldered to the input capacitor of each regulation circuit.

Results later......hehehehe icon_idea.gif

Semua graphic card pon bole buat, tapi kene tau laa kat mane nak solder. Lepas tu tak tau la ade mendatangkan faedah ke tak laugh.gif

Tapi untuk graphic card aku mmg berkesan la. Mungkin mobo nie teruk sikit.....tak supply cukup current kat AGP slot doh.gif

halo, ur fx5200 is 128bits or 64bits? wut brand? i doubt is there any different to vmod between 128bits and 64bits. i noe most of the 128bits is done by connecting vr to pin 6 and pin 9 of the ic to ground.

My card, MSI FX5200 128MB 128bit.

Voltmod does not depend on bits, it depends on the IC used to control the voltage on the card.

I'm having a very hard time overclocking this 9550XT. Every time I upped the Vgpu, the ram clock went way down doh.gif .....I've read about this problem somewhere before but forgot where.....it has something to do with Vddq.

With 1.6V Vgpu, I can get 570MHz but then the ram clock have to be drop to 270MHz shakehead.gif . Now Im only using 1.48V, the GPU is at 500MHz and the ram is at 330MHz sad.gif

Arghhhh......I hate this 9550XT Rev 2.1. My 9550GT clocks to 600MHz easily cry.gif

Currently, this is my best score dry.gif

Yeah....my previous 9550GT can do better than this doh.gif
I don't need that AGP mod anymore because I soldered the 3.3V from psu directly to my card.

Done some research and it looks like the Rev 2.1 9550XT GPU really sucks cry.gif Older revision seems to clock higher. I think they put some reject 9600XT core in Rev 2.1 shakehead.gif

Spend my weekend poking my card with my multimeter and found another Vmod. To be honest, I dunno what this voltage is for laugh.gif but raising it help me to get better OC. I think I'll stop playing with this card before I kill it tongue.gif

Here's the mod that I found. This voltage have something to do with the ram. But I'm not sure wheter it's Vtt or Vref or something else......I JUST DO IT laugh.gif
The higher you set your Vgpu, the higher you have to set this voltage too or your ram overclock will drop.

And here's my latest score at 520/340....(bole la, naik sikit yawn.gif ) I'll use this for 24/7

Hahaha....few people are interested in Vmod....nice, my thread made some impact brows.gif

These days it's hard for me to do stuff for people baecause I'm busy with work. Maybe on weekends can do. Like what mADmAN says, the charges is pretty cheap just enough to cover my fuel and parts (and my expertise of course icon_idea.gif ). He pays extra.....but I don't know why (sedekah kot laugh.gif )

Or if you want, just post the pic of your card here and I'll help you to find the Vmod for free. smile.gif

Assalamualaikum Bro Shah,

Sorry lame tak masuk thread nie, so didnt see the NF7-S v2.0 Ram Mod.

Because of not being able to supply 3.3v, i sold of the board and used a DFI NFII Lanparty. The Board Could supply up to 3.4v tak silap.

But now, the mobo is sent for repair, No POST. THE LED only displays the system is booting.

The Oc menu on DFI is more complicated than ABIt. haihz....

anyways...

since i have a few old GC lying around, thinking of giving it a whack on Volt MOd.

p.s : tapi GC lame.. hehehe... MX440 ? boleh ke ?

yap..got 1 version the mem is 333mhz oni. is the older version and lower-end card. this also depends on the ramchips max mem can go up to. if ur ramchips by default can go 400, but the manufacturer flash it to 333, then above 400mhz shud be no prob. but ur case i think shud be the ramchip is original supported oni 333.

Sorry for disturbing ur thread.

Got Some Question on TDA2004 IC.

REcently i was planning to do a portable amp based on the OPamps.

but couldnt find any OPamps and just got myself some TDA2004 kits.

just for the sake of soldering. biggrin.gif

everytime i plug in my speaker / headphones. it hums. any ideas what is causing the hums ?

Here are the pics.

I'm no expert when it comes to audio stuff laugh.gif But usually humming is caused by poor grounding.

Why don't you ask around in the Audiophiles section. They have a section for DIY amp.....here you go

That is all the tools that I used. Maybe a tweezers will help.

The risk of killing your card is very high indeed. Normal overclock without voltmodding can kill your card and now you're adding voltage....go figure icon_idea.gif

When soldering, it is also possible that you will kill the IC on the card. If you heat the IC too long (eg: soldering wire to one of the leg), you might kill it. So practice with your dead hardware before attempting the actual mod.

Good luck..... sweat.gif laugh.gif

use DMM (digital multimeter) to measure the voltage of vgpu and vmem from the capasitor.

mod = modding (verb)
the word "mod" comes from "modify" or "modification"
modding means u modify ur hardwares to let it do more than it can by default or to add/unlock some features and etc...etc smile.gif

noobs at volt modding shud be careful, u must first consider that the card ur about to mod is to be thrown away so that if anything goes bad, u wont cry ur eyes out, ikut mcm shah, rosak jer beli baru, rosak lagi beli baru, tak nangis pong, betui tak smile.gif

Kau la hero ku! But too noobs, master ur soldering skills first, seriously thats the best advice from sumone who fried his expensive GC once way back when i was young young young and the forum has less than 2000 members.

theyre just terms used to shorten a longer word dude...

mod=modify
modding=modifying

as for the meaning....a dictionary will help.... just look for the word modify or modifying wink.gif

basically means changing something from its original form to gain improvements.

hi, i don't know this is the right section to post but i'll ask it anyway. is it safe to solder both the psu's 20 pin connector together? what abt the molex? i'm planning to solder 2 psu together but i need advise on safety and practicality. so any experts can give any opinions?

No it is not safe since no 2 psu have the same voltage level. If you want to turn on both psu together, only connect the PS-ON which is the green wire from the 20-pin connector together.
For practicality, you might want to make that connection removable. Use some sort of connector, don't solder directly together so it will be easy to remove the second psu when needed. smile.gif

Hmm, shah, just curious, what are those ICs that you solder the VRs to? Have a old P4 478 mobo which I suspects has a undervolting problem (according to BIOS/speedfan, no option to adjust voltages). Going to check with my DMM, if it really is undervolting would like to know how to vmod the thing back to stock. As it is it seems to be having some trouble running faster processors than 1.6GHz.

Oh, btw what are the typical Vcore and Vmem of the 9550 series? Was trying to find the voltage of my card, but not sure reading is which. Mine is a Xpertvision 9550V+, 450 core 350 mem OC@525/410 (no vmod), wondering if its factory modded-cos it gives similar benches as a 9600XT.

the colorful 9550 in the first page was mine...its exactly the same as ur 9550v+ only difference would be the cooler. colorful got heatpipe cooler tongue.gif flex.gif

if i remember correctly.. according to the spreadsheet the MAX voltage of the rams was around 2.3 IINM. and at stock its running at 2.2 wink.gif can only increase 0.1v. not too sure coz when i sent my card to shah we found out that the rams voltage can only increase very little.

i forgot the voltage for the core though.

Those ICs are the voltage regulators. Undervolting maybe caused by underpowered PSU. Check your PSU voltage rails under full-load condiion first and make sure everything is ok.

For 9550, the Vcore is normally around 1.3V and the Vmem depends on the type of the ram chip used. For DDR it's around 2.5V and DDR2 1.9-2.0V depending on the ICs used and their spec. Some manufacturer over-volt their 9550 to get better overclockability or they already OC it by default.

For example, my 9550GT have 1.32V for Vcore while the vanilla 9550 usually have its Vcore at 1.25-1.27V. 9550GT runs at 400MHz while vanilla 9550 runs at 250MHz.

thanks for the reply shah. i'm using your proposed technique actually my plan was to make use of 2 cheap psu to deliver a higher power capability, but it seems what you've explain is true. so i shall cont to use the proposed method. thanks a million for the advise

Thanks shah & madman,

So the ICs read the output voltage and adjust the pulse width of the power mosfets if the voltage varies? or does it use another method? I understand from my university physics and electronics basics you're just modding it into a voltage divider using a VR to present it a false reading to make it go higher rite?

Abt the undervolting board, I'll give it a shot with my CM realpower 550W, if its not the voltage regulators then I'll ask again. Don't think it the PSU though its cap ayam, voltage on DMM is not as pretty as true power PSU but still ok. Only way is if the PSU is presenting a input resistance, which I doubt. Btw, I don't have a digicam, can I just give you the markings of the ICs?

bro try to add some damper circuit(filter) on your supply line.
a ferrit core and some filtering tools for the supply and source line
will help alot.
anyway, TDA2004 with 15WX2 RMS right?
a good VR for the main valume control will be an added advantage for great crystal clear output.

* i had my STK dual channel amps collecting dust. it was my final year project on Polytech sin year2000.
