Now I regret for not paying attention to my Japanese classes in university, I cannot remember those places name at all. cry.gif

I just got to know my best friend is coming back to Malaysia for good in March, knowing that CNY is in Feb, I only have this month. I plan to visit from 30th Jan to 7th Feb. I know that this thread requires some homework done before can ask for advice here. I'll be back. laugh.gif

I plan for Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and back to Tokyo for my flight to KL.

I will stay with my friend in Tokyo, the rest will be on my own. Solo trip. blush.gif

But I want to take advantage of free accommodation. blush.gif

Fly in from KL to Osaka on 30th, the explore Osaka and Kyoto until 4th, 4th to 7th/8th in Tokyo. Then back to KL, I think that's pretty OK right?

Anyway u buy tix liao? If not yet, why not fly open jaw KL - Tokyo then Osaka - KL. then only need to shinkansen one way.
*
I haven't bought yet. What is open jaw? laugh.gif My friend also suggests me to go back from Osaka.
Thanks and reading some of the posts here makes me scared, so strict one. laugh.gif
I have so many things in my mind now, I'm excited to go but at the same time worried because I'll be alone most of the time and I don't understand Japanese. rclxub.gif
That kind of feeling really demotivates me. cry.gif

No worries, a lot of us (i believe) hv minimal or zero in Japanese but still survive n most importantly enjoyed so much n wanting to go back. So I'm sure u'll experience the same too, just do some research, ask around n u'll b fine smile.gif

Typically, how friendly and helpful are Japanese? I know Taiwanese are friendly and willing to help if one is lost. I know most of the Japs don't speak English right?
In term of those public transports especially subways, road signboards and restaurant, is English version available as well?

as i only go kyoto from my preview trip..yes most of the signboards for train and subways are english..restaurant on the other hand are mix..some are japanese only while others are in english..that goes for the menu also..i also get by with minimal japanese, i am solo traveler also..if ur lost ask businessman or the younger generation, they are friendly and helpful. consider getting a sim card or mobile wifi..so can use google maps + translate..it helps alot.
*
Yes, I will get the iijmio SIM card that is 2GB and put in my iPad, can tether as well.
I plan to take the daily 500 yen bus rides in Kyoto and just afraid I'll get lost. laugh.gif
So much of stress now especially traveling alone and by nature I'm not that adventurous to begin with. blush.gif

no issue la..unless u go places like ohara which is out of the range of the 500yen pass..if within the vicinity of kyoto shouldn't have any problem..or wake up early to beat the queue take the raku bus..can go all the popular spot.
*
OK, I'm not that adventurous, I will survive within the 500 yen places. Raku bus? I will Google that. biggrin.gif

QUOTE(Human Nature @ Jan 2 2015, 12:50 PM)
You will be amazed at how helpful they are. One tip, do not refer to them as Japs, kind of a derogatory term to them.

No issue with signboards but may have problems in some restaurants so just point to menu / picture.

One thing I am very impressed with Kyoto is their bus system. If you have done some homework beforehand, no issue at all.
*
Sorry, just wanna type fast. Will refer them as Japanese.
OK, your words make me feel better. biggrin.gif

QUOTE(audreyreiko @ Jan 2 2015, 01:53 PM)
Did anyone mention to get a Suica pass? It's basically like touch and go where you can top up. smile.gif You can use it in both Kansai area and Kanto, quite useful for us.

Kansai people (Kyoto, Osaka) are generally more helpful and warm people compared to Tokyo folks. You know la, Tokyo big city, some people rather hide behind their face masks and headphones and pretend to not see you when you ask them questions.

Travelling alone is so awesome but a bit intimidating for me, good luck! smile.gif
*
Yeah, I need plenty of luck. First time solo and in Japan where I can't understand anything. doh.gif

I applied leave and immediately my boss approved it. I haven't even bought tickets yet. Will buy tomorrow. Most likely from KL-Tokyo, Osaka-KL.
The planned route: Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka.

Hi, I just noticed AA flies to both airports now and different timing.

I want to book for 30th Jan and noticed these two schedules for two different airports:
1) Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo - Narita
D7 528 0045(KUL) - 0845(NRT)

2) Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo - Haneda
D7 522 1440(KUL) - 2230(HND)

Both same price, I guess I should go for option 1 right? The timing seems better.

While coming back, I don't know if I should stay one more day in Osaka and leave on Saturday (7th Feb) flight at 2335 or Friday (6th Feb) flight at 1100. hmm.gif
Stay one more day means have to spend one more day of accommodation and expenses. laugh.gif
In term of flight ticket price, Friday is cheaper by RM 170. To me that's fine actually.

I plan for 30th-1st Tokyo, 1st to 5th Kyoto and Osaka. 6th morning flight, so can't do much. If I go back on 6th.
I plan for 30th-2nd Tokyo, 2nd to 7th Kyoto and Osaka. If I go back on 7th.

hmm.gif

I just bought my flight ticket via AA, not exactly cheap. Plus luggage and what not around RM 1600 but I save on accommodation. I will stay at my friend's place in Tokyo and another friend's place in Kobe. I will travel to Osaka and Kyoto from her place everyday. biggrin.gif 9 days of accommodation is basically solved. biggrin.gif
Now need to do homework as I will still travel alone, my friends will be working... smile.gif

Guys, for Hakone, I don't think I will take Romancecar due to budget constraint. So I will take the normal Odakyu Line Express from Shinjuku and get down at Odawara. That's possible right? I saw Tokaido Line also goes to Odawara. Please correct me if I'm wrong. notworthy.gif

I want to purchase the free pass but not sure if I should purchase from Shinjuku station or Odawara? http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2358_008.html This link shows Purchased inside the free area (e.g. Odawara Station) 4000 yen vs 5140 yen at Shinjuku station.

Your guidance is very much appreciated. notworthy.gif

Kodama (slowest tokaido train) will stop at Odawara. If you are having JR pass, then you can board this for free.

If you purchase the Hakone Pass at Shinjuku St, then the fare is inclusive  of the Odakyu railway.
If you use your JR pass for Kodama to Odawara, then get the Hakone Pass at Odawara.

Got it! Thanks. biggrin.gif

Sorry, re quote your post again.
Did you mean the fare of 5140 yen inclusive of Odakyu Line Express? blush.gif Then it's pretty worth of it.
I'm still contemplating to get a JR pass or just Pasmo card? If I'm not mistaken Pasmo can be used for JR line as well. Your advice on this is very much appreciated. JR pass is also not cheap...

Yup, this may give you a clearer picture:
http://www.hakonenavi.jp/english/freepass/

Pasmo is just like out TnG card, universal card but no discount, fuss free. You may want to have a look at Kansai Thru Pass as another option when you are travelling in kansai area.

Rough calculation, it is not worth for the JR Pass since you are only travelling one way Osaka-Tokyo. However, since you are moving everyday from your base in Kobe to Osaka/Kyoto, you may use shinkansen using the JR Pass. So use hyperdia to add up your journey costs and compare which one is better, with or without JR pass, or using Kansai Thru Pass.

Have fun getting headache  laugh.gif

Tips, plan your osaka trip to concide with weekends, then you can use the Eco card.
*
cry.gif I try to avoid Shinkansen actually...
Unfortunately I'm leaving for Malaysia on Saturday's night, so the Eco card can be used on Saturday only. I will Google about this.
Honestly, I'm already crying at one corner now. So complicated. cry.gif

Sunday also can use the eco card. Else have a look at Kansai Thru Pass.

For me, I used cash for shinkansen with icoca card and pasmo card

Combine it with Kyoto bus pass, Eco card, Haruka combo.

I'm going back on Saturday...

Alright, I will look into it. Thanks a lot ya. biggrin.gif
