DONE DEAL: Shaw thing for Man Utd as Van Gaal secures £27m signing of Southampton star

The England left-back passed a medical in the north west yesterday and put pen to paper on five-year deal worth £100,000-a-week.

Shaw, 18, spent last night in Manchester before the club formally announces the transfer later today.

Chelsea, Shaw's boyhood club, were also interested, but were unwilling to match United's offer for the Saints starlet.

The deal also includes adds-on which could see United eventually lay out close to £36m for Shaw.

It is the second capture made by the club in the space of 24 hours following Ander Herrera's arrival yesterday.

The Spanish midfielder became new manager Louis Van Gaal's first signing at Old Trafford signing a four-year deal worth around £90,000-a-week after United activated his £28.8m release clause.

The signings of Herrera and Shaw will be a huge boost for United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who has been under huge pressure to perform in the transfer market.

Woodward was criticised heavily last summer for failing to land any of former manager David Moyes' top targets.

But it is clear the United chief is intent on avoiding any repeat ahead of Van Gaal taking the helm

Manchester United are set to make a £30m bid for Arturo Vidal as they look to secure their third signing of the summer after Ander Herrera, and Luke Shaw who is expected to complete a move to Old Trafford on Friday.

Southampton left-back Luke Shaw will complete a £31.5million transfer to Manchester United in the next 24 hours after being told he will be first-choice left-back.

It is understood that he has been assured that he will start and 33-year-old Patrice Evra, who will remain with United, is expected to have a reduced role at Old Trafford.

Sportsmail revealed last night that the England international met United officials at the club's training ground, where he was given a personal tour ahead of a medical on Friday morning.

It is part of the understanding If all goes as expected, Shaw could be presented as a Manchester United player on Friday afternoon.
