Well...
http://snapsort.com/compare/Nikon_D3100-vs...00#similarities
Large sensors
D3100: APS-C 23.1x15.4mm
A6000: APS-C 23.5x15.6mm

Its true Nikon does use Sony Sensors. The A6000 is probably the newest apsc sensor sony has. The nikon d3100 has 14.1MP sensor so probably nowehere close to A6000 sensor. The Nikon D3200 is probably using the same 24MP sensor as the NEX or A SLTs.

Nothing new that companies buy other company's parts to use in their products, of course with contract deal.

Edit: Well seeing Canon rumors of the Canon 7Dmk11 might be using a foveon sensor. Maybe they outsourcing too with Sigma?

Sensor size NEVER indicate that sensors are same.

For example, both the 5D mark III and mark II has the same size of sensor.

Does this make the sensor same?

Just like Toyota and Honda having the same displacement size engine, but they will never be the same block.

if planning to use UWA or fisheye converter, u can go for SEL16F28. otherwise u just continue use the kit lens SELP1650, since both lens wide end is same 16mm (24mm equivalent with full frame camera's field of view)

well,
according to technical specification, both were using APS-C size image sensor, and Sony is the image sensor manufacturer for both camera. however, they were manufactured with different technology and image processor, thus their image output is quite different
moreover, A6000 is mirrorless camera, with electronic front curtain shutter, enable faster shutter response, which is faster and better than d3100

Hold up... I'm a lil' bit confused here.
Whats the difference between SEL16F28 and SELP1650 then? Let's assume that I'm not planning to get either the UWA or fisheye converter.
Will the images of the SEL16F28 turn 'sharper'?

no need go into so detail la, compare the age already know. impossible to use a same sensor for so long on different cameras right (other than silly canon tongue.gif)

Don't prioritize sharpness when you are just a beginner looking to get a good camera.

the 1650 might not be as sharp as the 16 since it's meant to be a cheap and convenient kit lens instead of a professional high quality lens. but you get a good wide angle (24mm on FF equivalent) and telephoto (75mm on FF equivalent) instead of getting stucked on 24mm with the 16.

sharper image is useless if you don't get the zoom/ reach you wanted, cropping a image will always degrade it compared to physical zoom.

SEL16F28 is fixed focal wide angle lens, meanwhile SELP1650 is standard zoom lens. if u never plan to get converter u should stick on the kit lens, and actually SELP1650 overall IQ is better than SEL16F28

SEL16F28 is wider than SEL20F28, but if terms of IQ, for my test, i feel SEL20F28 sharpness is slightly better. otherwise both lens perform quite similar

*just take note of i never own SEL20F28 before and i just having a short test which my friend own it. maybe other user can share with even more detail

Conclusion, people get the SEL16F28 because its pocketable, light, small and they want to use either the fish eye or wide angle converter

A6000 body itself is not pocketable. In the old days the sony kit lens was long like a dslr kit lens so that's why the pancake really made sense. Now sony kit lenses are all retractable zoom lens that shrink close in size to a pancake lens. And the new kit lens already has the range 16mm@F3.5, so not much use for a sony 16mm@F2.8.

The next lens should be something that the kit lens can't do. Like a telephoto zoom 55-210mm lens for portraits, birds, sports etc. Or a 30mm macro to shoot bugs or other macro stuff. Or a 50mm f1.8 prime for sharp bokehlicious portraits. But before you get them you have to think what do you want to do or else you're just buying a lens just to sit in a drybox.

then go for prime lens. like SEL30M35 or SEL50F18. both perform very well in terms of portrait, although SEL30M35 is used for macro photography
