I dont even hv the proper equipment, basically this is what i am using atm.

A pair of satay stick and plastic bags cut into strings, 100% recycled content tongue.gif Actually I was studying on methods about recycling and this is one interesting way to utilize your plastic bag.

Did some learning and experiment and this is the product:

Hi there! Actually, what you did there is not called knitting, its crochet. Crochet is like one-handed knitting, I do that pretty well tongue.gif Knitting uses two long 'needles' while crochet uses a single hook.

I'd like to teach myself to knit too, but not very successfully. Mainly because I crochet better than I knit, and knitting usually is for clothes. I'd prefer to use natural fibers like wool or cotton but those can be very expensive! If you're looking for books, you might find it helpful to find a book with colored photos as it will be easier to understand what they're trying to say.

I'm just starting to learn how to crochet. I don't think I can ever learn how to knit, it's too complicated.

Crochet is much easier and more to fun to me.

I've personally visited Lily Handicraft and also Jet Sun Handicraft, both in Sungei Wang Plaza. Both are very helpful and friendly. The cost for knitting needle varies according to sizes and also material. If you just want to start out and don't want to spend too much, pick the metal (aluminum) needles. They cost around RM 10 per pair. If you prefer, there's also the bamboo version. Pick that if you have more moolah biggrin.gif. They cost around RM 20 to RM 30 per pair.

For yarns, they also varies according to the material and quality. The cheapest one and available in abundance is acrylic. A bit rough on texture. Range from RM 1 to RM 10 per ball. Other types of material also available. For example a ball of wool yarn i bought cost me RM 28. *Shudder* Again, if you are just starting out, pick a good quality acrylic. It's cheap, but it's a good starting material.

Happy knitting! smile.gif

Actually you can bring your desired work and design of your choice, get the materials from the store and they will teach u for free. That's why it costs more to buy the yarns and needles. I hardly buy from Lily at Subang Parade coz they are too pricey for me coz I learned from books and it's more like a practice and try to figure them out. I'm still learning though.

If you are from KL you can actually head down to PJ Oldtown and there's a shop selling all kinds of handicrafts called 'Sin Wah', it's beside Mc'donalds. Been buying from them for more than 10 yrs. They have everything and they are the cheapest smile.gif [buy more and get more discounts]

Hi Erickk. I just started selling some yarns and crochet hooks. You can check it out at Muhaz. The store is located in Subang Jaya. Right now, I'm only selling Nona yarns and Tulip double hook 3.0-4.0. It's not much but it's a good start for beginners.

You can also get some hooks from Daiso. They also have them in bamboo and everything there cost RM 5. They also have a good selection of yarns.

Hi,

I believe you can get some cheap yarns from Daiso. They sell for Rm 5 each. Quality not too bad in my opinion.

Just to share my little experiences. I buy yarns online and ship from UK. It is at least 20%-30% cheaper than buying locally here. The only bad thing is, if you not buying yarns from local shops, like the one in sg wang and the one in subang parade, they are not going to guide and teach you knitting nor crocheting.

Anyway, I picked up the techniques myself, which I think you may try too. There are lot online resources which you can refer to.

The website that I placed order from charge Pound 5.95 each order. So more worth if you order more items each time. I normally order materials for 3 short sleeve blouse in one order, and it costs around rm80 (inclusive postage) for one blouse. Of course, it depends on the yarn you choose too. I normally order Patons 4ply 100% cotton yarn.

i'm also a beginner knitter. you can learn all the basics in youtube. just type knitting tutorial. there is this 1 channel i subscribed http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCroNgMIOCKOsU5LpnNNFH_w

she has very good tutorials for knitting projects. because of her, i successfully knit my baby's booties. i really love to read knitting pattern & amaze how these designers can think the patterns

i don't know if because i learn to knit first, its really hard for me to learn crochet. i think i need a class for this. try to do granny square but failed. i even didnt understand crochet pattern.

from my experience, for starting to learn basic knitting, buy a double-pointed needles. size 3.5mm or 4.0 mm or 4.5mm. buy aluminum material. most books & guide suggest using bamboo material but after 1 week you will be comfortable with aluminum dpns. buy nona or minlon yarns. this is the cheapest. normal price rm2 per ball. try buy only two plain colors (1 ball per color) & START KNITTING!!

after 1-2 weeks, you will know already what to buy for your first project. GOOD LUCK!!!

For me, I think knitting is harder compare to crochet because I start off learning crochet first.

As you said, learn the basic stitch first for crochet. I also learned by watching youtube, learn how they insert the hooks, tips and tricks. Early project I made is an applique such as love, stars and leaf. I move on to do granny squares and now I can crochet almost anything.

i went to spotlight when it is newly open. I checked the yarns there, they dont have 100% cotton 4 ply yarn. i bought some of their Moda Vera's Gelato yarn, 50% cotton + 50% acrylic yarn, at RM4.50 only per ball and it is about 134 meter per ball. I dont really like the yarn due to the below reasons:
1. yarn is too thick for a 4 ply yarn
2. acrylic yarn is not as soft as 100% cotton yarn
3. hotter then 100% cotton yarn
I normally knit blouse, thats why i more concern about the thickness, and softness of the yarn.

but no doubt, spotlight is a good place for you to play with variety of yarns at a cheaper price. :-) happy knitting.

there is another website we can try out.
http://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk

they have this patons safran which deramores.com dont supply. this is 100% 4 ply cotton yarn too.

i never buy from this website yet, but soon. drool.gif
one thing to note, the postage charged by woolwarehouse is a little more expensive than deramores.

Hi everyone.

I am new to this forum and would like to ask a question. Have anyone experience knitting a big yarn ball with lots of break in the yarn. I bought a big ball of acrylic yarn to make a baby blanket. Started from the centre of the ball of yarn and there was quite a number of break at the beginning. So Sad and not sure to go complain or not. vmad.gif

I am currently doing this. Tutorial is all good but I keep screw up! Started with 6 stitches and in the middle will suddenly end up more.

Tried 12, suddenly will become +1 or -1.

Best tutorial so far I find

[EDIT]

Turns out worse than expected

To make things better:
- get biggest wool
- make sure the gap in stiches are not too loose or too tight. Around 2 finger gap will fit nicely.

Practise more will bring good result. Keep it up! thumbup.gif

I finished it at last but the quality wasn't what I expected. I will learn crochet or other ways instead of arm knitting now. Arm knitting takes more skills

but knitting give you bigger satisfaction. well, depends on what you wan to do also. you can start with crocheting small items, like wash cloth, coaster. you will get fun from it.

if you want to do clothing, there are lot knitting patterns online or from book. but you will need to have patience and good knitting skills.

good luck in your trying ! biggrin.gif

Hello, everyone. I'd just like to know... Where do you guys get your yarns from? Physical stores? Online? It's pretty tough to find a store in Ipoh that sells yarns. Is there anywhere else that sells yarns, especially the local brands e.g. Nona in Ipoh? (Except for Daiso since the one in Aeon Station 18 does not have the color I wanted sad.gif)

What type of yarns are you buying? Cotton yarn? I find buying online from UK is lot cheaper than buying locally, especially during sales time like 30 percent off once or twice a year. You can check out at www.deramores.com. you can even get aluminium circular needles at less than rm20.

I normally get acrylic yarns since most of the stuff I work on are amigurumis. Last time I got mine from spotlight, but there isn't a store in Ipoh and wasn't too keen on buying online for now cause of the shipping and I don't need a big bunch. ><

Yes, but they sell each size separately and sometimes they don't have the whole collection. (some sizes not available) If you'd like to get the whole set, lazada/shopee sells em at a cheaper price but their quality isn't all that great.

I am just a beginner here!

Hey! biggrin.gif I do agree that knitting is super hard but it could be fun too! Well, if you know how to knit! HAHAHAHA rclxm9.gif I was a beginner like you too.... thought I was "SMART" enough to learn it on my own. So I went to search different videos on Youtube but FAILED cry.gif but then I was recommended by my frd to this Knitting class and trust me it was so damn fun! The best part of this workshop is that it doesn't only teaches you knitting but also crochet and stuff! thumbup.gif Perhaps, you can have a look and try! cool2.gif cool2.gif

wait for discount and sales.

https://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/
https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/

I usually wait till 30-40% for my shortlisted yarn then only i make the purchase.
For example, there is 40% when u buy 10 balls. -> https://www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/l/knitting...le?hfkcww230919
Or u get 15% for first purchase.

Please check the comments of the yarn from www.ravelry.com. Some very splitery. if you looking for quality yarn, i think u need to really check whats other users comments are.

i think most of them use alpaca or cashmere yarn. you can do some study online. both not cheap.
i saw one not so expensive and worth trying is this:
