Hi there! Actually, what you did there is not called knitting, its crochet. Crochet is like one-handed knitting, I do that pretty well Knitting uses two long 'needles' while crochet uses a single hook.

I'd like to teach myself to knit too, but not very successfully. Mainly because I crochet better than I knit, and knitting usually is for clothes. I'd prefer to use natural fibers like wool or cotton but those can be very expensive! If you're looking for books, you might find it helpful to find a book with colored photos as it will be easier to understand what they're trying to say.
