Digital TV services in phases next yearSource: http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...ases-next-year/KUANTAN: Digital television services will be available across the country by the end of next year.
Communication minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said all districts in the east coast could receive digital transmissions by January.
MYTV Broadcasting, the company responsible for developing and managing the infrastructure for digital terrestrial broadcasting, had installed transmitters at Bukit Besar, Kuala Terengganu; Bukit Bakar, Machang, Kelantan; and Bukit Pelindung, Pahang.
“Decoders (set-top boxes) had been installed at selected homes since May 17 as part of the test phase by MYTV,” the minister told reporters.
He witnessed the installation of a decoder at a house belonging to A Rahman Abu Bakar in Kampung Rumbia, Beserah, Kuantan, on Saturday.
Ahmad Shabery said the test transmissions would be expanded to Sabah and Sarawak and then to the northern and southern parts of the peninsula followed by the Klang Valley at the end of the year.
He said two million decoders had been distributed free of charge to selected homes for the test transmissions, and they would be replaced with MYTV decoders when digital transmissions are fully operational early next year.
Ahmad Shabery said although transmissions were currently in standard definition, “it is almost equivalent to high definition”.
He said 40 broadcasters had shown interest in the platform offered by MYTV.
