SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean troops on Sunday exchanged fire with a runaway soldier who was surrounded
in a forest after he killed five comrades near his North Korea border outpost, and brought in his parents to persuade him to surrender,
a defense official said.

One platoon leader was wounded when the sergeant, identified only by his surname Yim, threw a grenade and fired
on the military personnel closing in on him, according to a defense ministry official who asked not to be named,
citing department rules. The official said troops fired back.

Villagers in a nearby area were warned not to leave their houses. The village head, Jang Seok-kwon,
said that he heard gunshots ring out about 10 times Sunday.

The military brought Yim's parents to the forest about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the border outpost to try to persuade him to give up,
the official said.

following an unsuccessful suicide attempt, the Defense Ministry said.

The 22-year-old sergeant surnamed Yim shot himself on the side of his abdomen but failed to kill himself.
Yim was being taken to a nearby hospital, said a ministry official, who spoke on condition of anonymity citing department rules.
He gave no further details.

There has been massive manhunt for Yim since authorities said he killed five and wounded seven Saturday night
before fleeing his frontline unit with his standard issue K2 assault rifle.

He also fired Sunday on the troops chasing him, injuring a platoon leader. On Monday, officials said a South Korean soldier
was wounded by suspected friendly fire.

Earlier, troops surrounded him so closely Monday in the forest that they could toss him a mobile phone to talk to his father
as well as bread and bottled water. His parents were also brought to the area to try to persuade him to turn himself in.

It wasn't clear what triggered the rampage, and there was no indication that South Korea's bitter rival, North Korea, was involved.

Yim was scheduled to complete his nearly two years of mandatory military service in September, according to defense officials.

Initial personality tests in April of last year put Yim within a group of soldiers who need special attention and are unfit for frontline duty,
according to the Defense Ministry. But tests last November concluded he had improved and could serve in the frontline area,
defense officials said.

guys, what happened in the case of fighter jet gets down by accident, do the pilot have to cut his pay or what? do the fighter jets get insured or compensated?

i mean, it's a very pricey item in the inventory, if anything happened the money gone kaput.

A military-chartered Learjet plane has crashed in western Germany after a mid-air collision with a German air force Eurofighter jet.

The Learjet came down in woodland near the town of Olsberg, killing one person and leaving another feared dead.

The Eurofighter returned safely to its base near Cologne. The incident happened during an exercise with another Eurofighter,
German media say.

do these vehicles even have seatbelts?

i think they didnt turn oon the aircon so all the vents are left open for ventilation thus the guys sitting on top section gets thrown out?

i see army convoys carrying soldiers on truck, apart from driving slow, theres pretty much no safety features. i don't think it's appropriate for them to travel in such unsafe measures.

i saw the construction of the Iveco armoured car in Discovery, all the seats got 3 point seat belts like F1 car.
