Usually MDF is used if you want a high gloss smooth finish as it doesn't have any grain.
Don't be too hung up on "solid wood" as it's just two thin pieces of plywood on either side with some filler in the middle for support.

Each material has its pros and cons. My current kitchen and wardrobe is using "solid wood" and finished with exotic wood veneer. I had it for 6 years. Trust me, it has it's own set of problems.

I dont know what you desire as the end result but for me, I look into the very details of things. The final look is very important to me.
If I want a modern sleek look especially with white colored doors, I would choose spray paint glossy finish. White on glass doesnt look like white. Its not solid, there is some transparency. You can try acrylic but some may not like the frame. I dont. As for "scratch problem", if you got a child running around with a sharp object, stainless steel also wont help you.

Last but not least, particleboard /chipboard is not really a bad thing. My old condo kitchen came with those particle board type given by the developer. After 9 years, with numerous water leaks from my upstairs neighbor, it is still in one piece.

Different situation requires different materials. Dont worry too much about durability. More important is workmanship

Thanks for your valuable opinion, I like modern sleek look.
Yea the end result has to be good, or else it will be very up sad coz it's not cheap after all.
Will go to HomeDec again tomorrow to finalize all the quote again before making any booking.

Try the alumimium kitchen cabinets from Belkitchen if you like sleek. The built is much cleaner and, well, sleek compared to wood.

Price is high though. Last year they were offering 30% at Perfect Living.
Otherwise die-die cannot afford.

U mean when they say "solid wood", they are actually referring to wood laminates?? I thought solid wood meant it is a whole piece!

anyway , solidwood is solidwood , plywood is plywood , blockboard is blockboard ...there are not same material...
nobody will use solidwood to laminate because solidwood original already got "woodline"...
normally just plywood & blockboard will laminate...

Maybe I said it wrongly in my previous post. Some are indeed real solid wood. When I say solid wood, I mean the whole piece from top to bottom is from one solid piece.
Usually they are Nyatoh wood.

I am not sure what you mean by laminates but to me its the part that you see and touch. Laminates is some man made material and veneer is a piece of thin "skin" from a real tree.
The laminate or veneer would go on the plywood which gives you the final finished look.

You got to remember that a complete cabinet has several parts (carcass, doors, shelves) and they could be made from different materials.
When they say solid Nyatoh, do they mean just the doors? You got to ask about the carcass and shelves

Oic. Thanks for the clarification. I supposed I got confused, bcos usually when the KCs quote the cabinets and talk about material, it refers to the doors. So when they say solid wood I think they were referring to the doors. Wah...they use nyatoh for cabinet doors?? Mine is oak only shocking.gif carcass is made of mdf. Is MDF superior to plywood? Cos I was told plywood will kembang. MDF won't.

Oh I thought laminate was the process where you "kepit" something in btw two layers and fuse it together.

MDF and plywood are same standard. When exposed to water, MPF are worst actually since it is using saw dust.

What's the problem? smile.gif
Sorry to confuse you

Btw I like to choose my own hood, hob, oven etc so I don't really care about those packages that they put together at these home fairs

No worries, you are not confusing me but guiding me in a way I understand what is good & what is bad.
Somehow budget are a big issue as we all love to have something good but yet still affordable.
Normally we will think that if you buy things in the fair the offer will be good compare when you are not buying it during fair or promotion.
So what needs to be done have to be done soon, for me the most important things beside budget are during & after sales service.
Just wish me luck later when I go to HomeDec & do hope that I can get something affordable & good.
Cheers
