Hey Guys,

I Need help in identifying if the Zippo I got was original. Sorry I cant put up pics cause no Camera..

I got this from Pranging Mall in Penang for RM90.

http://www.zippocasemuseum.com/index.aspx?...=productdetails

The model is 1618ZB.

The box came with a paper insert with the zippo lifetime guarantee ( This isn't hard to fake so I am not sure about it) , there's no orange security seal. The lighter was displayed inside a case. I have not seen how the security seal but my guess is that its for lighters still in a box and not on display.. Am I right on this? The black box i received has a barcode on it with the 1618ZB (Once again not hard to fake.. Barcode Printers cost between RM2K-3K anyways)

The bottom engraving on the case display shows D 2006 but the lighter metal insert shows it was made in K 2005.. I am not sure if this are meant to match... When I run my finger over the bottom engraving, i can only feel the Zippo. The one thing i find strange is the bottom engraving can only be read correctly if i place the front design of the lighter facing face down on the table. Some of the stuff i find on the net seems to show the engraving should be read correctly if the lighter is placed with the front design face up on the table.

The side with the hinge has 2 small dimples so that should be ok. I cant tell anything about the sound cause I dont know any better... Seeing and hearing stuff on the net aint a replacement for experience.. But it does sound fairly nice.. I cant tell if the Slims have a slightly different sound that the standard size zippos.

I might get me a fake zippo at feringgi just to test it out though..

Thanks and regards.
Ian

Hi Guys,

Here's the current Lighter i'm using..

user posted image

Got this engraved by a shop with my nick on it. Costed me RM35 if i'm not mistaken.

user posted image

This is my 6th or 7th Zippo, and i chose this as it eliminates the odour and totally no leakage which i've been facing for the past 8 years of using Zippo Lighters.

This model is actually for Cigars, but i just love to be different.. haha..

the zippo premium cost RM7.50, consider ok lah!

Added on October 31, 2009, 5:35 pmactually got few way to distinguish the fake n real zippo as i know, coz i got it both, now i want to share with other here, usually the out case n the insert manufacturer date is different b'coz of separate made, so if u discover the date different is normal!

the insert
1)rivet is white color, usually the fake 1 is yellow made by brass
2)the below insert case not flat, c carefully u will discover few mm is dent in, the fake is just flat
3)the cam is dark color, the fake is bright.

the out case
1)the hinges is 5 part n it not equal, 1,3,5 is small, 2,4 is big size, the fake is equal
2)the below word of BRADFORD,PA. not BRADFORD.PA.

n the sound opening the lighter also nice with 'thing' the fake is just like 'chak' hope this help u all!

ANYONE WHO WANT TO SELL ZIPPO TO ME

Hiya! I've been collecting Zippo's since after school. Before this I used to get Zippo's from watch shops around KL/Selangor, 2nd hand shops (used to have a Zippo used and repair shop in Campbell), flea markets (on Sundays at Amcorp Mall-nowadays not so easy to get!) and whenever I have to travel overseas for work.

When it comes to pricings and originality, based on personal experience I can assure you that all of those watch shops that sells Zippo's or even the one at Central Market (the gift outlet) would definitely be overpriced by 50%-80% from the original listed price. All these dealers are given a list of standard retail recommended price from their supplier for each design or series of Zippo that they supply, just like any regular retail business. Furthermore, most of them dont keep the original models box. I have yet to meet or known of any of these Zippo dealers selling according to the recommended retail price as well as ensuring that each model comes with the original box...Except for one (in KL & Selangor)...other than that I dont pretend to know such!

I recommend you to go to K.S Gill at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. Its main business is stationary supplier but they do repairs and sell vintage lighters as well as Zippo. In fact they have quite a large range of Zippo designs and series. However, these designs/series are quite fast moving as I notice a lot of 'old timers' collectors goes there to purchase. Example, one of my favourite Zippo collectibles are Mazzi's. I'll attach here of one of my Zippo Mazzi's that I have. You can go to any shops or dealers of Zippo in the whole of Klang Valley, look for this design and the price. The price range from RM170.00 (if your lucky!) to RM249.00 (this price is at a watch shop 1st Floor at Sg Wang Plaza). How much did I bought it at KS Gill? Lets just say the price listed (before discount) is RM141.50. Whats the discount %? Somewhere around 15%-20% - if you buy only one (1)! If more that one....why dont you check out yourself. Anyway, I got the Mazzi illustrated box with the lighter

Its quite saddening that most of these dealers or shop selling Zippo's are 'robbing' customers (us) in broad daylight (way of expression...hehe). That is the reason, why even if you buy a used Zippo, it may not be a reflection of true value...unless its one of those rare findings one like the second pic I attach here (hehe...show off a bit.

I recommend you to look for a particular Zippo design/series browse at as many places that sells Zippo, then go to KS Gill and see for yourself. Oh..maybe its best you go to KS Gill first (dont rush to buy), see the design that you like then go around price checking at other shops or Zippo dealers. Well, the thing is the Zippo stocks in KS Gill are quite fast moving (I mean they replenish their stocks every 2 months) and their best sellers there seems to be Mazzi's, Guy Harveys, Tattoo Art, Harley Davidsons, Replica's and Music series.

The person to contact would be Mr Manjeet. 03-2693 6902 / 012-2007431

I've been buying Zippo's from him since the past 4 years. Well, if you are a serious collector like me, he would be able to source series or designs that are not made available to South Asia market. Ofcourse, for that services the price would be totally different.

Best of luck in your Zippo search.

Hiya! Anyway, just to share with you guys about Zippo Bottomz Up. It seems to be quite an attraction these days especially due to its distinctive one of a kind Zippo design. Personally, I think that the Bottomz Up will be a temporary hype..yet, its great to have atleast one as part of the collection.

Anyway, the price is relatively low compare to other Zippo range that I collect. The listed retail price for Malaysia is only RM132.00 (before discount). Make sure when you purchase the Bottomz Up it comes with its original box. Its slightly bigger than most Zippo boxes, with the Bottomz Up words inscribe.

Anyone with great tips or insights about Zippo collecting, I'd like to hear more of it.

Ciao!
