Focus recomposing is usually not accurate when your DOF is small oh  hmm.gif
Try manually selecting AF points? hmm.gif

Can try it using Liveview too if you need to "focus" on areas way outside the focusing area haha

QUOTE(celciuz @ Apr 1 2014, 07:38 PM)
Normally what I do is, if I'm really near to subject I would use the corner AF points. If I'm relatively far away then I would rely on the middle points (or any of the 15 cross sensors).
*
Ahh.. thanks, will try again the next time I shoot human, haha. Shooting human is so hard.

Will be going sabah next week, and will be camping in one of the islands for a night, hopefully will be able to get some nice landscape shots. rclxm9.gif

Not bad, I like your 3rd shot the most. You didn't use a tripod or put on something stable?

Btw are you staying in a condo? Is it possible to access the rooftops of those buildings? Might be a better vantage point

Any Sigma 35mm F1.4 A owner here?
How is your lens performing straight out of box?

Today went to lowyat and try a unit.
I didn't bring my d700 so the shop borrowed a d5200.
At f/1.4 it was kinda oof, even at f/2...centre is still oof.
worse than the 50mm 1.8E I had. shakehead.gif

Asked whether got another unit, that ah beng gave an annoyed face.
Selling 3rd party lens but don't know 3rd party lenses famous issues doh.gif

Now have to try with other sellers.
Luckily didn't buy online.
*
Um, I've only got this lens recently and no time to shoot lately, busy preparing for exams and assignments and reports and yada yada mad.gif

Btw, first impression... I hardly get anything in focus at 1.4 in close range, half body shot is ok, but close range, mostly soft.

Might be my focusing technique, cause I'm used to focus and recompose, and at closer range the focus point will change after recompose with such a big aperture I think, will try again by manually choosing my points the next time I use it wide open.

Some shots below of my cousin shot with it, all at f2.

I was using focus and recompose using the middle point, everytime I focus on the eye and refocuses the focus of the final image switch to other spot. So just a general idea of how the lens perform, sorry for my lousy focused photos, haha

Then you should really check your lens whether got any back/front focus issue.
Put on tripod and focus on a ruler or some focus chart, or you can even line up AA batteries just for simple testing (at f/1.4 close focus you will notice it immediately and easily, even direct focus on something).
Focus on the subject, take a shot, then turn on LiveView mode and focus and take a shot - compare both shots at higher magnification.
*
Tried d, no back or front focus issues, just happens everytime I refocuses my shots.

Will try to use 3d tracking or just manually set my focus points the next time I shoot people again

How is the Tokina 12-24 f/4?
*
Hmmmm, it's the first and only ultra wide i'd owned, don't think I can comment much on it, nor have I anything to compare it to.

But overall quite nice for the price la, center of the frame mostly sharp across all aperture at wider angles, corner quite sharp already once stopped down to f8 or f11.

The only thing I don't like about its color, not really sure how to put it, it's green is rather strange. AF-MF clutch is a bit annoying too.

You can see the pictures I took with it in my flickr, most of them hdr though biggrin.gif

Oh... sorry about that haha, just accepted your request man!
Pai sei ya... I don't really like to accept requests from people I don't know: lesson learnt already, last time many macro shooters just added me to tag me every day on their photos  sweat.gif  sweat.gif

Thanks, that's encouraging. Still needs lots of lots of improvement though, work hard shoot hard~ tongue.gif

It's ok, understand your feeling, luckily I don't have that many photographers friends.

Welcome back man notworthy.gif notworthy.gif
Great shots, the weather looks so nice over there haha~~
In general, I think the photos will be nicer if taken from a lower point, and closer to the main foreground subject (which should be present for each shot imho).
I think the colours (especially the greens) are a bit too saturated  hmm.gif

I love shots 3 and 5 a lot~ Especially 5, the sky damn majestic  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif
*
Haha, thanks bro.

Have to admit I really did bump up the green's saturation a bit too much, and in some pictures I keep hitting the vibrance also. Guess there's just this period in our life huh.

Will try to travel more and keep improving tongue.gif Hopefully will be able to take great pictures some day

all of them are hdr? not sure if asked before, but how to get raw hdr file from photo matix?
*
Yup its all HDR except the night time long exposures.

Um.. im not really sure but the process is like this i think, from lightroom to photomatix to lightroom. raw > tiff > tiff. so you'll get to process the tiff file imported from photomatix back to lightroom after the pictures are merged.

Awesome macro as always bro notworthy.gif notworthy.gif

BTW, I'm planning to grab a phottix octabox or something to try some portraits. Is there anything I need to get except the softbox? Flash stand/ bracket, and flash trigger/receiver?

Seems expensive sweat.gif

Wah, going pro with portrait liao bro?  thumbup.gif
You already have a flashgun right?
Imho, the cheapest way is to just buy an umbrella for flash diffusion. Then ask friends to hold it for you  thumbup.gif
*
Going pro still long way, thinking of playing around only, been using only natural light

Quite hard to find people to hold eh I think, unless when I'm shooting their gf =.=''

Wondering if the the pop up flash on d7000 can trigger the flash in softbox or not.. should be possible if the distance not too far away huh.

Yea might be going umbrella instead of softbox

Practice makes perfect man hehe, keep it up thumbup.gif

Yes, you can use the D7000 to control and trigger higher-end Nikon flashguns. The distance is pretty impressive, so long as you are not using a long telephoto lens haha laugh.gif
I used to shoot using my D90/D800 and SB700 with umbrella, the diffused light is really great... but in the end I think shooting with natural light is still more practical since I'm not shooing for jobs anyway haha~

Still, its fun to learn, and not too expensive~
*
Found 1 cheapo phottix softbox, might get that 1 to try 1st, and use on camera flash to trigger the flash. Still looking for a cheapo stand sweat.gif

I do mostly natural light too, just that saw those sunset strobe shots, looks interesting feels like trying biggrin.gif
