QUOTE(Boon3 @ Apr 21 2014, 10:26 AM) adding on......... Some people want to invest in yield, that is understandable, they want a stock which has lower monitoring requirements (Not lower risk!). So no matter in the ups and downs of the market they get dependable income and in the long run most good stocks will have capital gain to boot.Sometimes more common sense is needed than common text teaching. No matter how anyone spin it, 3% is peanuts. Even 4% or 5%. The stock market price fluctuation can easily erase a puny 4% or 5% yield. Textbooks never seem to understand or explain that STOCK PRICES are NOT a CONSTANT figure. However selecting good yield stocks is not so easy as looking at dividend % and debt level.. that is just too simplistic. For a PROPER dividend stock, there must be a set of criteria to be followed... of which includes the following I observe. (Yes I buy dividend stocks too! 1. Free cash flow > dividend paid 2. Dividend pay rate < 60% 3. Growth in dividend paid at least matching inflation 4. Long term dividend paying must at least raised dividend (YoY) 6 times out of last 10 paid. 5. Reasonable growth in profits (otherwise your dividend cannot grow) 6. Buy at reasonable price PE (after debt) or the earning yield you target (1/PEx100) 7. Business must have reasonable moat and consistent profits Well those are my criteria... This post has been edited by gark: Apr 21 2014, 10:37 AM |

QUOTE(Boon3 @ Apr 21 2014, 10:31 AM) Technically true.. if you buy 10Y government bond now and wait until maturity, you will get back your capital + accrued interest. There is virtually no risk unless the government KO.. However the inflation factor has not been accounted for. This post has been edited by gark: Apr 21 2014, 10:39 AM |
