Hi all, currently I'm contemplating on whether should I go for the diving certification (Beginner) as I'll be going to Gili Island soon and my friend kept persuade me to learn with him. My main concern is that I really wanted to try diving and at the same time I don't think I'll be frequent diver. And I'm wondering if there's any other additional charge besides the one I paid to get the certificate. These additional charges are like the additional necessary cost that I have to pay in order to dive like "Do I need to buy equipments for my diving?", "Will they charge a huge amount to dive each time at a certain site?(Entry fee) And if yes how much would that be?" and etc.

Another constraint also is that I'm short-sightedness and I've read the FAQ and there's prescription mask. But I don't think I will be a frequent diver and I think it is not worth it for me to get one for myself, I was wondering will diving centre have such items to be rented as well.

It's not a cheap hobby. If you are not interested in diving than there is no point getting your license. Although you will be going to gili islands does not mean you need to dive. Maybe try one or 2 discovery scuba there.
If you don't dive often than you need to pay for refresher each time. Specially if your a new diver and stop for a long time. Each dive in malaysia is +-rm80, out of malaysia can be from 80 - 150. Each dive is about 45min.

You can wear contacts. Some ppl like wearing contacts more than getting prescription mask.

Thanks for the info. Hahahaha but I guess it's because of few people warning me about this fish even before I touch the water. Pool 1 for confined water already learnt the sign for triggerfish.    Better be safe than sorry I guess.

Generally, fee for the course should include the theory, theory exam, practical in confined water and exam dives at Open Water. Most dive shops include equipment during the course. Then, accommodation n foods, transport... From ur place to main land jetty... Then to jetty at island....

If u dun mind, why aren't u ask those questions to ur fren whom asking you to train with? Just wondering, no offense...

Hi, thanks for the answer. Ya I did ask my friend as well hahha but he make a lot of sense on why I should learn diving, but then he wasn't sure as well what are the other additional cost. Cause for example right (might not be a good example), if I want to do photography, at first I tot just need to buy the camera, but eventually i will be needing tripod, this and tat @@ so I'm afraid like after I paid a huge amount for the diving course (And yes, it includes theories, confined water training and one open water training, in my case it is in Bintan cause im staying in sg), and then that's not the end of it as later i might need to incur more cost to get other thing like maybe fin or mask(as im not sure if these can be rented as well) and from the previous reply, i didnt know that a refresher course is required if i didn't dive for quite some time...

Actually if not sure tat one is comfy underwater or like diving... Go for the discovery scuba, an intro or short course into diving...

As in any other hobby, the buying list can be never ending.... Or can b simple too!

Using the camera example, if one is shooting normal landscape, daily event, the food.. Phone camera nowadays can do pretty well.. If one does some long shutter shooting once awhile, point n shoot will do the job...

We have ferns in the forum tat just use rental equipment coz they dive 1-2 times a year...

Locally it's easier to find PADI due to them dominating the market but SSI is the same. Some would say SSI is better n some say PADI. For me it's up to the diver, it's a continuous learning process.
Dive center recommendation depends on your price, location and island you wan to do it at. Also how you want to do it, theory and pool training on mainland 1st than dives on island or everything fully on island.
