Should use cage la, let them go at the mountains. They are innocent one bro. Just looking for food. Pity them to be born as rat.
No, cage will just give you too much after work when you trap a rat. If our area don't have forest or what, you will have problem. The area a mouse wonder is 5KM in radius.

sometimes may not kill straight, and that's when they REALLY suffer.
seen before half broken head/necks/limbs/tail but they still moving/breathing/struggling?
fact: there really isn't much humane way to get around this unless you're there at the trap 24/7 to put swift death to any poor rodent that will get screwed by it.
It depends on what trap you use. I have China made ones and from US also (Victor). I don't use poison also because it also suffer and when they die and rot in a small place hard to get them out. Effective way to reduce mouse population is with snap trap. Fast and quick.
How you want your trap to really kill fast is the spring they use. The stronger the strike the faster it kills them because you break the spine instantly. If you know when mouse got hurt they make noise and suffer but if the trap is quick if kills it instantly without the mouse making any noise. Last time when I move in to my house there was rats at the water tank area, they some how climb the drainage pipe up to the concrete slab there. I plug the hole and problem solve before I notice the drain hole I just put traps at strategic location.
Another method is to use electrode type mouse trap....go google it.
This is the brand I got..couple with the china ones (modified with stronger trap spring)....
