Hey there,

I'm glad that finally there is a thread for NUS 2014/2015 intake! biggrin.gif

Can I ask that when does NUS will send out the earliest offer?

For I had taken Cambridge A Level and submitted my application around early of December! Wondering if early submission of application will result into early application result? Hahaha.

And another question is want to ask if there are any seniors know the cut-off grade for 'Science' undergrad programme?

I'm hoping to do a Mathematics degree in NUS!

hello,

When will you receive the offer letter depends on NUS, i received it on April, if not mistaken.
You can go to www.nus.edu.sg , then click on admission > undergraduate programmes > indicative grade profile, then you can see the grade profile for the A level.  This result is based on the admission in 2013/2014

Hope this will help you
cheers smile.gif

Hey there!

Do you mind if I ask what course are you taking and your A Level/ STPM results? tongue.gif

The thing with the indicative grade profile on the webpage is for the Singapore-Cambridge A Level, but I took the CIE Cambridge A Level instead! So I guess I can't make a comparison over there sad.gif

It would be great if there's any current Malaysian NUS students see this thread, please drop by and share the results and course they are taking!

Will be much appreciated! biggrin.gif

sorry for that, i have asked others, they said that no grade profile for CIE A level, the most preferably result is 4A*.
i, same with you, CIE A level student, my A level result is 4A* and i am taking chemical engineering now...
cheersĀ  smile.gif
*
Ahh I see! My results are 3A* 1A, missing an A* sad.gif

Btw did you/ or anyone else submit the statement of results of A2 (which shows the percentile of each subject) in the application?
Cause I only submitted my certificate of A2 results (which only shows the A* and A).

Hi there!

I previously applied with my statement of results, but I do not believe that it is compulsory if you already have the certificates. Try not to worry about a missing A*. We encourage you to apply and see how it turns out biggrin.gif
*
Hey!

Actually I submitted my application already! Hahaha.

Cause I just saw in the application supporting document checklist, it stated there 'National Level High School Examination Result Slip'. So I was wondering if I have submitted the wrong thing? Nevertheless, my application status is now processing. So i guess it would be alright? If there's a problem, they should have told me by then already right?

Another reason that I only submitted my certificate but not statement of results is that I actually my A*s weren't all very strong sweat.gif So they won't know my percentiles but only the grades hahaha.

Hey people, I have a question regarding the Singapore Scholarship.

About the part that has be endorsed by Government/school, because I did A-level instead of STPM, so I cannot possibly get any Government school to endorse the application for me right?

So how can I find someone to endorse for me?

P/s : I don't think college can endorse the form for me, cause on the form, it stated only can be nominated by government agencies/department.

OMG guys, I just checked my NUS application status today.

Finally it became :
Application status

The general stages for the application status are
Application received --> Application processing --> Outcome of application

Your current status is Your application has been processed..

SO FAST! Hopefully is an acceptance! sad.gif

P/S : 'Has been processed' means they already have a decision right?! Results will be out soon right??

Yeap. Probably you're in the first batch of applicants where NUS start to select students!  icon_rolleyes.gif
Keep your fingers crossed! All the best to you.
For the other applicants who are still waiting, don't give up! smile.gif Your application will be most likely reviewed by NUS after they are done with first batch of selection.  smile.gif
*
Yeahhh! HOPEFULLY IS A YES! I pray so hard!

I think it's good sign?! Normally they won't reject people so early right? For my results are 3A* 1A.

GUYS I GOT ACCEPTED BY NUS!

Application status

The general stages for the application status are
Application received --> Application processing --> Outcome of application

You have been offered Arts & Soc Sci in academic year 2014 - 2015.
The details of the offer will be stated in the offer letter.
Your letter of offer was sent on 01-Apr-2014.
Please reply here by 10-Apr-2014.

Even though I really hope to get into Science (my first choice) to do mathematics, but I am equally happy with FASS (my second choice) too. Cause I love economics as well tongue.gif

Btw guys, another question is am I free to choose any subject as my degree in Art & Social Science? Or they will choose for you?

Thanks man! Cambridge A Levels!

I didn't expect it to come by so early, because Singapore A Level just released last month.
I guess it's because I applied quite early, like December if I'm not mistaken?

Btw, good luck on your application too! thumbup.gif

Nope. It is not under NUS.Ā  cry.gif It was formed by a few seniors few years ago to foster the Malaysians together.Ā  biggrin.gif
Congratulations!Ā  biggrin.gifĀ  biggrin.gif Yes, NUS will not choose for you and you'll have to declare your major yourself when class starts, don't worry about that!Ā  smile.gif

See you in NUS?Ā  biggrin.gif
*
Hahaha! Yeah man, if everything goes well and smoothly, see you all in coming August? biggrin.gif Seniors? tongue.gif

Btw, there's another I would like to ask. If let's say I want to appeal my choice of course, can I?
Because I really want to do Science (first choice) or maybe Engineering Science (third choice) now!
But I was given Art & Social Science (second choice)! I should have make engineering science my second choice last time. sad.gif Anyone has any experience regarding appealing choice?

P/S : I think I should be given Science instead of Art and Social Science, because I actually got my A* in maths, chem and phys, but A in econs! Why can't they give people their first choice sad.gif

Emailed NUS and asked them about appealing for higher-ranked choice of course and they said it is highly unlikely our appeal will be approved. Sigh.
Anyway, I know it may sounds a bit offensive, but the indicative grade profile for NUS state that 90th percentile to enter Science is AAA/A for Singapore CAL. I guess our CAL A* equals to their A. I think 4A*s is required to enter Science. http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/gradeprofile/sprogramme-igp.html
Anyway do you hear anything from NTU? My friend who has 4A*s got his offer for Chem Eng already! I did not get anything yet! :/ I think you can wait for your NTU offer and see how thing goes as you apply for Maths in NTU right?
*
Yeah, I asked them the same thing as well and they replied the exact same things as you said.

Well, actually the 90th percentile means the top 10% have the results of AAA/A but the 10th percentile means the bottom 10% BBC/B. I guess it's because I didn't take biology. My combination is maths, chem, phys and econs. I actually got A* for maths, chem and phys, but only A for econs. So I don't think it's my grade problem, but maybe rather the subject combination. As you can see, from the IGP profile, 90th percentile for Art and Social Science is also AAA/A, the same as Science; rather the 10th percentile for Art and Social Science is ABB/C, even higher than the BBC/B in Science. So I just asked them again, what if I declare the specific subject of degree I would want to major in 'Science' category, to see if it could increase my chance to appeal! Still waiting for their reply anyways.

For NTU, I have yet to hear from them too sad.gif But now after I got the offer from NUS, I really hope to get into NUS for maths instead of maths in NTU. Even though you can say both of them are good, but for now, I feel like NUS is still more well-known and famous than NTU in international level right?

The 10th percentile is actually for those students with 'exceptional talents & achievements'! I still think you can try to appeal! But you need to decide if you want Science or Engineering Science as we can only appeal for one course! Good luck!!
Yea I know right. After I get offer from NUS, I don't feel like bothering about NTU already.
In fact I am waiting to see if NTU will offer me for my first choice, Accountancy D: and I am thinking if I should appeal for Pharmacy as it is really unlikely to get it sad.gif
I am thinking to appeal for Accountancy in NUS instead as I am also interested in Accounting and personally think that Accountancy will give me a wider route compare to Science D: but still undecided if I want to leave Science field sad.gif
*
Hahaha, I think I will appeal for Science.

If you really get accountancy from NTU, I think you really have to go NTU already, accountancy in NTU can be considered as the most competitive course. Mostly occupied by Singaporean, if foreigner get it means you are really damn good already!

Eh why? I thought you said you like chemistry last time also right? If I'm not mistaken? But well, how would you say so that accountancy gives you a wider route to Science? For me, I think Science always has the widest career prospective next time, if next time you graduated with Science degree and feel like going into financial industry/ corporate world to work, you will still be able to do so. But if you graduated with Accountancy, and want to do Science, definitely you can't turn back. If you want to involve in accountancy, next time you graduated with degree in Science, you can still take up professional paper like ACCA or ICAEW right.

Anyways, I also wish all the best in your appeal and hope you make up your mind on which course to appeal!
I'm pretty much settled down with appealing Science already! biggrin.gif

Guys, can I ask how much do you estimate for the living expense each month in NUS?

Preferably if you can break it down into:
1) Accommodation
2) Foods
3) Miscellaneous (Transport, Stationery, Books etc.)

Would be much appreciated! Thanks!

if u guys hv not realize it yet, only certain sc courses hv high demand, eg. medicine, pharmacy, actuarial sc, and a few others only... social sc is higher in demand, law, econs, accts, business courses... etc etc is even more competitive on avg

if u end up at engineering, chances are a lot of ur classmates are msians or prcs or indians... local sg prefers business subjects

also dont bother about professional or not, if u hv acca vs ntu/nus/smu bac of accts, the academic degree will be more highly sought after

recently nus & nus's entry criteria drop slightly due to competition from smu which is slightly more highly regarded locally
1) in campus 300-700, out campus 300-800
2) 300, food in campus is cheap
3) transportation not needed if u live in campus, free shuttle... unless when u go out... if u stay out campus there's a student card... others cant comment
4) phone is 40/60/100 per month

Hey, I suppose the estimation you provided is in SGD?

Good morning everyone!

Now that the application period is over. I wish all the applicants ALL THE VERY BEST in getting your offer! The admission results will be announced any time from now till all the way to end of June. I believe some of y'all have already gotten your offer while some of you are still waiting anxiously! smile.gif Don't panic! We believe that you've done your best in your application so, keep your fingers crossed! biggrin.gif

So to spice up the environment, let me share a video with y'all that reflects our life in NUS! biggrin.gif

Here's a sneak peek on our Year 1 Malaysian students' performance preparation on an event called In-fusion (International Student Night)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C702WNtAsE

And this is the actual In-fusion performance which was held on 14/2/2014 by team Malaysia! biggrin.gif

Be anticipated! wink.gif

Awesome hahaha. It seems like NUS people can have fun too, instead of just study all day long rclxms.gif

I was wondering which one inside the video is you Eric tongue.gif

Btw Eric and Kahsing, do you mind give an rough estimate of how much you all spend on living expenses every month?
Breaking it down to - accommodation, foods, transport and miscellaneous.

Thank you so much!

QUOTE(Kahsing @ Apr 7 2014, 07:22 PM)
The monthly expenses(calculated based on the rates of AY2014/15) are roughly like this:
Accommodation:
Single room(SGD110 per week/approx. 440 per month), double room(SGD75 per week/approx. 300 per month). The room rates are charged on  a semester basis..(SGD1980 for semester 1 and SGD1870 for semester 2)

Food:
If you're staying in hall, breakfast and dinner will be provided every weekday plus breakfast on saturday morning and dinner on sunday evening totaling to 12 meals per week. Each meal costs roughly SGD2 (which is really cheap). Assuming the meals taken for lunch as well as dinner on saturday night and breakfast on sunday morning costs around SGD3-4, your monthly expenses on food would be more or less SGD180.

If you're staying in student residences in which no meal plans are available(but you can have your meals in the food court there), and assuming each meal costs about SGD3(depending on what you're eating), your monthly expenses on food would be around 250-300 SGD.

Transport: Traveling within the campus via the internal shuttle bus is free. For traveling outside campus(bus, taxi, MRT..), around 10-20 SGD would do(I hardly used more than 5SGD per month..LOL..)

Miscellaneous:
Telephone bills(depends on you...but I think 10-20 SGD per month would do as many uses whatsapp  and line for instant messaging instead of SMS)
Photocopy of lecture notes:Price is 4 cents per page for black and white...if you're the kind of person who hates digital reading materials and prefer hardcopies like me  tongue.gif , then the expenses should be around 10SGD(depending on how much lecture notes your lecturer uploaded...)

Hope that clears your doubts  smile.gif

*By the way, Eric and I are in the same ethnic dance...make a guess  biggrin.gif.... lol!!
*
Thank you so much! Your breakdown is so clear and useful biggrin.gif So I suppose 800SGD per month would be sufficient? hmm.gif

Btw for tuition fee loan and study loan application, is it 100% guaranteed we can get? And I actually apply for financial aid from NUS too, but still yet to hear from them. I'm wondering whether is it easy to secure the financial aid from NUS.

Oh and for the accommodation, does it already include utilities (e.g. water, electricity)? Also, we pay one lump sum amount of accommodation fees on the start of the semester?

Well, I personally prefer hard copy lecture notes too tongue.gif So that I can scribble and make extra notes on the side hahaha.

Too difficult to make a guess man, so many different dances! Hahahaha.

Really appreciate your estimation, so clear and very helpful! rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
