Add something from my previous post..for double room(only available in halls of residence), the rates would be 1350 for sem 1 and 1275 for sem 2. Based on my experience, 800 SGD should be fine if you planned your monthly expenditure well.

NUS is quite generous when it comes to giving out financial aids and loans so it should be no problem if everything goes smoothly with the application.

Yes, you'll pay the accommodation fees for the entire semester in one lump sum usually at the first month of the semester and the fees would cover the utilities like electricity, internet..etc..however, if you're planning to have a portable air conditioner or refrigerator in your room then you would have to pay extra for the increased electricity consumption.

There are actually more miscellaneous fees like welfare, registration fees...etc to be paid at the beginning of the semester but the amount varies so I can't be sure of it..

not saying that u hv to do it frequently.. just wanting to share my exp, so u wont regret later on in ur life... sg schools are producing grads of the same kind and the gov knows this thats why they are strongly encouraging oversea exchanges and i do hope you guys pick this up if you are able to.. sg dont have much to offer and most of the attractions are for tourist...

lots of activities that you would miss out being in school all the time, when i was ur age i went to climb mountains, hunt game meat, smoke weed (legal at that state), street demo for a cause i believe in, catch wild salmon, work as a barista, kitchen helper, trainer, uni police, drink n get wasted with friends, fabricate sword armour, pneumatic cannon at the school lab, speak up your political views, race cars... so much crazy things to do and enjoy... once you leave school all these will sound too wild or stupid to be done

problem with singkie education is it is controlled and so restrictive... not that it is bad, nus is in fact one of the best uni i hv been to, but u need to have a balance n see what's out there... dats why leaving campus n exploring at least in sg will do lots of good for u, not as a formal / academic education.. but on other things as well

1) How many years is NUS economics programme?
A Bachelor Degree of Art is usually just 3 years, the additional one more year is for honours.

2) Criteria in choosing accommodation.
I would personally split it into 3 criteria:
a) Price
There are three kinds of accommodations on campus for NUS which are hall, residence and residential college.

Hall provides single room at a weekly price of $110 and also double room which cost $75 per week. There is also meal plan provided by hall covering breakfast and dinner during weekdays, breakfast of saturday and dinner of sunday. The price is about $2 per meal and it is compulsory for hall residents.

For residence, the only one available for freshmen is Prince George's Park (PGP). It offers 3 types of rooms, type A,B and C. Type A is the most expensive one with weekly rental of $200 and comes with air-conditioner as well as attached bathroom. Type B's weekly rental is $120 and comes with basins while type C is similar to the single room of hall with weekly rental of $110. There is no meal plan for residence but PGP has two canteens whereby you can have a meal about $3 to $4.

For residential college, the weekly rental ranges from $120 to $145. Meal plan is also compulsory for residential college whereby the price is about twice of hall's meal plan. The detail list is available at

b) Location
First of all, transport around campus is rather convenient so location does not matter that much. However, if you insist on choosing the one that is close to your faculty, i would recommend eusoff hall or temasek hall which is just opposite of FASS.

c)  Activities/Programmes
Residence does not provide any activities on its own, so students who stay there usually join other CCAs in campus or else you can just stay there without any CCA involvement.

Unlike residence, halls in NUS is well known for their hall CCA. Although it is not compulsory for hall residents to join them, it is necessary to join quite a number of hall CCA to get enough hall points to continue their stay in halls. The competition varies from year to year and different for each hall. Those with insufficient points will not be able to stay in hall for the next academic year.

Residential College also have its own CCA although it is not as vibrant as hall (at least in term of quantity). On top of that, you will be required to complete certain multidisciplinary modules under the residential college programme (UTCP or USP). These modules are considered part of degree programmes.

3) Medical checkup
You can do it in Malaysia or UHC depending which one is more convenient for you.

4) Tuition grant and Tuition fee loan
Yes, tuition  fee loan application comes before tuition grant although tuition grant is required for tuition fee loan. You should come to Singapore earlier for your tuition fee loan application at the bank branches. You can come to Singapore before the term start for your Qualifying English Test (unless you are exempted from it) and also join some orientation camps (It is nice to know some friends before the term starts). You can do your tuition fee loan application during that time. Tuition grant application period is similar as last year.

Anyway, there are some updates I would like you fellow (potential) juniors to know:

Welcome Tea-s
According to the Office of Admission, those who have received an admission offer would be invited to the welcome tea! There would be one at Penang on the 10th May (Sat), one at KL and JB on 17th May (Sat). Since the admission offers are not completed yet, that doesn't mean you're rejected if you have not gotten an offer. Remember, PATIENCE is the key!

During the welcome tea-s, we, the seniors from MSL will be there as student helpers. We will be sharing about lives in NUS and anything that you would like to know about NUS during the welcome tea, so do come over to find out more! Of course, you can ask us right here too, but we prefer to see you and talk to you FACE TO FACE!

However, we were told to promote NUS as an international university so we would not be talking about MSL or the orientation programme that we prepare for you guys (UFO 9) during the welcome tea, but you can ask us about it personally or through forum threads! We will be more than happy to tell you more about it! 

ON A SIDE NOTE, we do exist! UFO 9 is still an ongoing thing despite we wouldn't be talking about it during the welcome tea-s!

We (MSL) are a voluntary (though unofficial) group of student body consisting of Malaysian students who organize events to bond / have interaction among the Malaysian students. One of the events, UFO 9, serves as an orientation programme to help the incoming freshmen (Y'ALL ARE OUR TARGETS!!! ) and seniors to mingle and gather.  Apart from making new friends, we will be having bonding activities, sharing sessions on some NUS stuff, necessities such as opening of bank account, places to get cheap groceries... and also tour around Singapore! Hey there, it is a very good question! 
Basically, we purposely make it this early to overlap with your QET test so that y'all wouldn't have to travel twice to Singapore for orientation programme and also for QET test.

It may sound really early as you guys aren't familiar with the orientation camps in NUS yet.
Faculty orientation and hall orientation (if you're applying to halls) will be held somewhere in the end of July, which is just days after MSL UFO 9. Of course they aren't compulsory, just that if you're interested to join the camps then you wouldn't miss them even joining our orientation programme! If we hold the orientation at a later date then it might clash with these other orientation camps, and you guys wouldn't have enough buffer time to familiarize yourself in NUS before starting your term here.

Do join us! Do tell your friends who are coming to NUS about it and come for orientation together-gether! 

Hi there You can check in as early as mid July, you just need to send an email to inform them. Like for me, I checked in to my hall at around 13th July.

Wah competition so high now. My 3A got me into NUS biz school with Asean Scholarship last time, now can't even go in.

Yes, checking in early means you would have to pay extra depending on how early you checked in prior to the beginning of the semester. Of course you can still buy the tee shirt from us(provided we have enough left) even if you're not able to join the UFO9 although we highly encourage you to join us and have fun

Are there any instructions on how to unblock the crop tool given? If you've tried all the possibilities then try editing the photo manually according to the dimensions being set. A manually edited photo should work tho.

If you're really keen to take up the Student Assistance Loan but couldn't get a guarantor, try e-mail the office of admission for opinion. Maybe there might be exceptions... Who knows?

I paid for my SOLAR application using VISA but mastercard should work. The website might be busy so maybe you can try refreshing the page or wait for short while before attempting to pay the processing fee again.

You can start filling in the application form for the tuition fee loan now as the deadline of the application is near the end of July. The tuition grant application will only be open during August so you would have apply for the tuition fee loan first.

Yes, you can put in all the halls of residence of your choice. If you're not accepted to any of them you will be arranged to stay in student residences.

Hmm, I am not sure why the problem goes like this. It could be due to the traffic of the webpage... Is there any other options for you other than using a credit card? For our year, we only had a problem where we couldn't access to the payment page due to the traffic. Let us know if the problem persists. Otherwise, you could drop an e-mail to Ms. Evonne Looi about this issue 

By the way, may I ask when is the QET briefing going to be held? Is it written on the freshman guide or something?
