Hard disk philosophy is that the head will get degraded when you read and write too much. The moment your hard disk is not idle, it is using up it's lifespan and have chances to crash the head. When you read you still have to provide some voltage to amplify the magnetic from the disk.

Summary.
Hard disk - Read write BT will spoil the HD faster.
SSD - Read won't but write will spoil SSD faster.

should be IDE.
logic of technologies :

Older - More durable, Weak performance
Latest - Strong performance, less durable.

just my opinion though.

i think there are two areas to be specific for this:
a.) HDD/ SDD will get spoil due too much reading and writing from torrents - Seems to have some basis for this but generally i think they are acceptable, moderation should be the key

b.) PowerSupply Torrents are left open overnight for downloading - (not really the cube powersupply, i am referring to the unit that converts 240v to DC) i think this part blows the laptop faster since most laptop are not built to run for days ... desktop power supplies (and definitely servers) are better built for this

really, this also depends on the quality of the power supply, be it desktop or laptop...

i tend not to switch of my main computer, last time laptop and now desktop, mainly since I ve setup VPN to retrieve files as and when i need when i am outside...

Yes, any computer can be a torrent server but whether or not its a good torrent server, that's a different story.

Here's some of the characteristics for a good torrenting server
1. Low power consumption - Power consumption is very important because high power consumption = more $$ to be paid on the electricity fee. For the selection of processor, there are some series of intel's i3/i5/i7 that have low TDP.
2. Good power supply - since these computers will be on 24/7, so having a good power supply will ensure that your computer doesn't burst one day out of a sudden.
3. Less unneeded peripherals - if your computer had already had an integrated gpu, then it would be unnecessary to add in a discrete graphic card as it only adds in more point of failure.

Things like amount of storage pretty much depends on the user so I won't comment on that.

and, I'm talking bout a pure torrenting server, so you may exclude some of the points above into consideration if you plan to use it as your daily machine.

Torrenting doesn't use too much of cpu power so any cpu would suffice(from Pentium 2 till i7 and beyond).
