Torrent do alot of read and write... if you are downloading then it is write

the concern is the numbers of read and write...

for SSD there is a limited write and re-write it can perform before a chip degrade into a level it is not usable anymore... same goes with HDD the more you write and re-write it will eventually expired....

if you torrent alot say 30GB per month that is 30GB of write and re-write per month to your SSD or HDD you do the maths...

read dont kill your HDD or SSD as it just read... write kill your HDD or SSD

read on HDD = piece of cake = no problem

write on HDD = input new information on HDD = more harmful?

last time ppl say BT will hurt HDD cuz early torrenting software will read and write directly onto the HDD without buffering...

current BT software (most of them at least) will use RAM to buffer and then read/write in 1 go, thus reducing the -ve effect...

if u re really so concerned, use an old HDD to BT... i ve one in my desktop (5yr old 320GB one)... BT for nearly a year still refuse to die...

another solution is setup your home torrent server, with rutorrent client (my family is using it)
best to fit the torrent server with those NAS or AV HDD as these HDD have more stable voltage and speed, and longer life span as well.

Do you agree that BT will having more disk reading than normal http?

if yes, then it theoretically will shorten the lifespan
*
write/erase cycles in ssd will shorten its lifespan. read has nothing to do with shortening lifespan of ssd.

First time heard BT/torrent will hurt HDD, but I think I am lucky enough as I have been 4 years Xunlei/IDM for my old dell, still ok internal HDD.

it all boils down to how u want to setup all the rigs in the house... anywhere is fine as long as u ve the space laugh.gif

for HTPC usually they are placed in the living room connected to the big big LCD TV... if u do that u'll probably want to pick up a nice looking case too (eg Silverstone ML series, Lian Li PC-C37) XD

its true that hdd and ssd has a write limit. but to at the current price of hdd .. dont think you should be worried about breaking it..

on the laptop side, i think its more of a heat issue than hdd breaking down..
as long as u can keep ur laptop cool, should not be a problem..

You are right... reading won't hurt SSD as information just read...

when you write and re-write the SSD chip will perform erase and re-insert new information thats why when you have SSD you disable disk defrag...

You can read as much as you can but writing is the one that hurt the disk,,, thats why in SSD we use TRIM so the algorithm reduce the write cycle...
