Player Ratings
Ederson – 6 The City goalkeeper could have done better against Sammie Szmodics’strike.
Rico Lewis – 7 Confident in progressing into the attacking role, should have scored his goal.
Manuel Akanji – 6 Let Szmodics sneak past him, grew stable into the role following John Stones’ introduction.
Ruben Dias – 7 Led the defensive line effectively barring the counter-attack that set Szmodics free to score.
Josko Gvardiol – 7 Paired well with Doku and De Bruyne on the left, was right to prioritise defensive work.
Matero Kovacic – 8 Retained the solid display from last week, instrumental in tearing up Ipswich’s midfield while regularly covering from Gvardiol in defensive duties.
Kevin De Bruyne – 9 Belgian brilliance at its best; scored brillaintly and created Haaland’s second goal with a beautiful assist.
Bernardo Silva – 7 Quietly donned multiple roles across the pitch, switching between attacking and defensive duties, effectively helped stretch the midfield.
Savinho – 8 Won a penalty for City and assisted De Buryne’s goal, solid display.
Jeremy Doku – 6.5 Made good runs, which troubled the defenders marking him, but failed to find his teammates.
Erling Haaland – 9 (MOTM) Solid penalty, followed it up with two well-struck goals to get his first hat-trick of the season.
Substitutes
John Stones – 7 Came on early in the second half and immediately helped gain control in the defensive midfield role.
Ilkay Gundogan – 6 Backed De Bruyne in the centre of the pitch, mirroring his play from when he last donned City colours. And if it’s not been said enough, welcome home!
Jack Grealish – 6 Quick runs but did not quite connect with other forwards, hesitant inside the box
James McATee – N/A
Matheus Nunes – N/A

Ederson
Could he have done better for the Ipswich goal? Szmodics' shot squeezed under him and he could only watch it trickle over the line. 6
Rico Lewis
Starting again ahead of Kyle Walker, Lewis enjoyed a battle against old teammate Liam Delap and was effective in attack again. But how did he miss from eight yards when his shot smacked against the bar? 7
Ruben Dias
Took control of the penalty situation by pushing Muric away to let Haaland compose himself, and got stuck in against a physical Ipswich attack. 7
Manu Akanji
Guilty for allowing Szmodics through on goal, but composed and confident otherwise in another good performance. Unfazed by Liam Delap's efforts to draw him into a physical battle. 6
Josko Gvardiol
More noticeable in attack than defence given the dominance City enjoyed. Helped Doku out well on the left and that partnership looks to be the one going forward after the Savinho experiment against Chelsea was shelved. 6
Mateo Kovacic
With Rodri still not in training, Kovacic has a run to show what he can do at the base of midfield. After a starring role against Chelsea, Kovacic picked up where he left off and held the team together, until his contact injury early in the second half. 6
Bernardo Silva
De Bruyne and Savinho were the ones among the goals, but so much of what they do wouldn't be possible without Bernardo Silva. He often goes unnoticed in midfield yet it's probably his most effective position. 8
Kevin De Bruyne
On the spot to stroke home a second after Aro Muric's mistake, and a lovely ball forward to give Haaland a brace has De Bruyne off the mark with a goal and assist for the new season. 8
Jeremy Doku
It must be a nightmare defending against Doku - he just keeps going every time he gets the ball and wants to take on his full-back. No goals or assists to show for his efforts, but a performance the manager should be delighted with. 7
Savinho
Clever play to win the penalty so soon after going behind, and it was his pressing that dispossessed Muric for the second a couple of minutes later. A relentless option on the right and a blistering start to life in the Premier League. 8
Erling Haaland
He was never going to miss the penalty, and the second was a typical, bombastic Haaland goal to time the run, head round the keeper, and volley into the net from a tight angle. A rare goal from outside the area to complete another City hat-trick. 8
John Stones (on 50)
Playing as a definitive holding midfielder, Stones replaced the injured Kovacic and was selected ahead of Ilkay Gundogan to come off the bench. Looked more like the Stones of 2022/23. 6
Ilkay Gundogan (on 71)
Slotted back into midfield like he'd never been away with a few lovely touches. 6
Jack Grealish (on 71)
Kept the width and one shot was deflected wide. 6

Player Ratings
GK: Ederson - 5/10 - Failed to get enough on Szmodics' opener, reigniting the debate about whether he would have saved Son Heung-min's famous strike last season.
CB: Manuel Akanji - 7/10 - Comfortable at the back and regularly tried to get forwards to support Savinho in attack.
CB: Ruben Dias - 7/10 - Controlled his defensive line well and always looked to get things moving with the ball at this feet.
CB: Josko Gvardiol - 6/10 - Solid and unspectacular. Just did his job.
DM: Rico Lewis - 7/10 - A real force in midfield. Involved in a whole lot and caused plenty of problems in the Ipswich box. Unlucky to see his shot crash back off the bar.
DM: Mateo Kovacic - 7/10 - Worked incredibly hard to keep City's relentless pressure up. Good energy off the ball and impressive composure in possession. Limped off early in the second half.
RM: Savinho - 8/10 - A massive threat. Won the penalty for the equaliser and then it was his pressure that led to De Bruyne's strike. Caused all sorts of problems down the right side.
CM: Bernardo Silva - 6/10 - Noticeably quiet. Really struggled to get involved despite City's dominance in possession.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne - 9/10 - One goal and one assist in the first half. Another typically excellent performance from the Belgian.
LM: Jeremy Doku - 7/10 - Savinho stole the spotlight on the other side of the pitch but Doku was still his usual self, driving at defenders and firing in dangerous crosses.
ST: Erling Haaland - 9/10 - Haaland may not have been too involved in City's build-up, but he still walked away with three goals. It's just what he does.
Substitutes
SUB: John Stones (50' for Kovacic) - 6/10

SUB: James McAtee (90' for Haaland) - N/A
SUB: Matheus Nunes (90' for De Bruyne) - N/A
Manager
Pep Guardiola - 8/10 - Despite the early setback, City stayed true to their game plan and ruthlessly picked Ipswich apart.

Player Ratings
Ederson (5/10):
Let Szmodics' shot through his legs too easily.
Rico Lewis (7/10):
Played the hybrid full-back/midfielder role to perfection, but should have scored when he smashed against the bar.
Manuel Akanji (5/10):
Lost track of Szmodics for the goal. Otherwise was assured.
Ruben Dias (6/10):
A commanding presence and also supplied plenty of useful passes into attack.
Josko Gvardiol (6/10):
Focused on defending, which he did well, and let the experts do the attacking.
Bernardo Silva (6/10):
Didn't directly contribute to the win but engineered a lot of the build-up play.
Mateo Kovacic (6/10):
Very tidy in possession and out of it. A shame to see him forced off injured early in the second half.
Kevin De Bruyne (8/10):
One of those games where nearly everything he touched turned to gold. A goal, assist and a near-worldie when he clanged the bar.
Jeremy Doku (6/10):
Lively but the occasional heavy touch let him down. Upstaged somewhat by the man on the other flank.
Erling Haaland (8/10):
His second goal was him at his clinical best. Finally got his hat-trick with a deadly strike from outside the area. He now has as many Premier League trebles as Wayne Rooney, who played for 16 seasons.
Savinho (8/10):
Ipswich just couldn't live with his trickery and relentless energy. Won the penalty, robbed Muric for De Bruyne's goal and dragged Davis all over the place. All that was missing was a goal.
Subs & Manager
John Stones (6/10):
Looked at home in midfield after replacing Kovacic.
Jack Grealish (5/10):
Things didn't quick click for him and was booked at the end for diving.
Ilkay Gundogan (5/10):
Got a hero's welcome when he came on but didn't do loads in his 21 minutes on the pitch.
James McAtee (N/A):
Brought on in added time.
Matheus Nunes (N/A):
On in stoppage time.
Pep Guardiola (6/10):
A very comfortable afternoon for the coach, save for the shock early goal and the Kovacic injury. And this was without Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and Rodri...

Player Ratings
Ederson- 6/10: He had very little to do but he will be disappointed to concede early on. Ederson was once again superb in possession.
Rico Lewis- 8.5/10: Another brilliant display from Lewis. If he continues his early season form for the entire season there’s an argument to be made that he is the biggest young English talent in the game.
Manuel Akanji- 7.5/10: Solid again at the back and brilliant when in possession.
Ruben Dias- 7.5/10: Continued his strong to the season with another quality showing.
Josko Gvardiol- 7.5/10: Gvardiol took his game up a gear from his performance against Chelsea. Was cool in defence and calm in possession.
Mateo Kovacic- 7/10: The Croatian international continued his good form from last weekend before being substituted with a hip injury. Hopefully, the injury isn’t too serious as he looks in superb form.
Kevin De Bruyne- 8/10: Scored one and set up Haaland’s second with a sublime ball. A great all action display from De Bruyne.
Bernardo Silva- 7/10: He spent the majority of the game on the periphery of proceedings but did what he had to do well.
Savinho- 8/10: Another quality display from Savinho. He won the penalty for City’s equaliser and set up De Bruyne’s goal with his pressing. He already looks up to speed with the way City play.
Jeremy Doku- 6.5/10: He wasn’t poor by any stretch but the majority of City’s play came through Savinho and De Bruyne on the right wing. He looked dangerous on occasions to his credit.
Erling Haaland- 10/10: It’s easy to judge Erling Haaland’s performances. If he scores one, it’s a seven or more. A brace is an 8 or a 9, and a hat trick is a 10. Simple as that. Haaland was superb today and looks set for a massive season.
Substitutes
John Stones- 7/10: Replaced Kovacic after halftime in midfield and looked calm and composed. City don’t need another midfielder they have one in Stones.
Jack Grealish- 6/10: He showed a bit after coming on late. He picked up arguably the most absurd yellow card of the season late but he did look fit and hungry.
Ilkay Gundogan- 6/10: It was a special moment when he came on late in the second half. He didn’t miss a beat and it looked like he’d never left.
James McAtee- N/A: Not on long to mark.
Matheus Nunes- N/A: Not on long enough to mark.

Ederson (5): The guy can pass, but he is lucky Man City don’t face many shots. Should have stopped Ipswich’s opener.
Manuel Akanji (7): Really didn’t have much to do. Nice kickaround with the lads.
Ruben Dias (7): Really didn’t have much to do. Nice kickaround with the lads.
Josko Gvardiol (7): Really didn’t have much to do. Nice kickaround with the lads.
Rico Lewis (7.5): Lewis is making that inverted role his very own. What a talented player. He was sensational in that midfield today.
Mateo Kovacic (7): Was once again having a good game until he had to go off injured.
Savio (8): I refuse to add the -inho to his name. We get it; you are Brazilian. We can tell by the way you play, lad. This guy looks so good. I can’t believe City managed to get him so cheap from, *checks notes*, their sister club…
Bernardo Silva (7.5): Just did Bernardo Silva things to be fair. Kept the ball ticking quite well, wasn’t anything special, but it was productive.
Kevin De Bruyne (8): Scored the easiest goal of his life. Midfield maestro, and a Premier League great. Sensational player. I could keep going.
Jeremy Doku (6): Check the age of the opposition fullback. I struggle to see what Pep Guardiola does in him. He wasn’t great today.
Erling Haaland (10): You know what he did. He did it three times.
Subs John Stones (7): A CB shouldn’t be this good in midfield. Imagine Per Mertesacker playing as a DM.
Ilkay Gundogan (6): He is back.
Jack Grealish (6): Hair goes woosh. Got booked for a dive.
James McAtee (N/A): Played.
Matheus Nunes (N/A): Played.

Player Ratings
Ederson – 7 Cannot be faulted for the goal, did well with distribution even when ran almost to the halfway line to stop an attack, good saves in the second half
Rico Lewis – 7 Held his ground while defending despite a couple of nerving moments, assisted Haaland’s second goal.
Manuel Akanji – 6 Not necessarily a poor performance, but was exploited often by pacing attackers, an unnecessary yellow card in the end.
Ruben Dias – 5 Victim of his standards, perhaps, but it was a ridiculous own-goal to concede, however unlucky it may be.
Josko Gvardiol – 5 Repeatedly lost possession, was caught out of position a few times, and left space for preventable attacks, especially the ones driven by Bowen.
Mateo Kovacic – 6 Had a relatively quiet game, barring a promising through ball to Haaland, and reserved himself to holding the midfield
Bernardo Silva – 8 There was barely any part of the pitch that was untouched by the Portuguese, baffling how he holds himself back from scoring at times but more than makes up by putting up an unmatched shift.
Kevin De Bruyne – 8 Frequently challenged this game, viciously precise with his passing in the first half, but was spun around on more than one occasion in the second half.
Jeremy Doku – 7 He had a routine performance on the right wing, was promising in the attack, and did a better job finding his teammates.
Jack Grealish – 7 Helped create several chances from his position on the left, worked well with Kevin De Bruyne, and could have got himself on the scoresheet
Erling Haaland – 9 (Man of the Match) An early miss followed by a splendid hat-trick. Logically, that’s an excellent way to debunk the argument that 70 league goals in 69 appearances can be scored by “any striker placed in this City squad.”
Substitutes:
Ilkay Gundogan – 7 Helped add balance to the midfield, characteristic through ball to Haaland.
Matheus Nunes – 7 Grabbed an assist and did well to collect passes from City clearance to set up counter-attacks.
Kyle Walker – 6 Lost the ball in the closing moments that could have led to a goal, which ultimately led to Akanji’s yellow card.

Player Ratings
Ederson: Charging out of his area to head into touch was a reminder of how well he reads the game, and his kicking was on point. 7
Lewis: Becoming an extremely good cog in the City machine, although he should have scored when he burst onto a Haaland pass in the box. 7
Akanji: Most of the danger was away from his side, although it wasn't an easy day for the defence with West Ham's pace up front. 6
Dias: Unfortunate to concede an own goal from Bowen's cross, although his passing and heading wasn't as accurate as it normally is. 5
Gvardiol: Struggled all game to handle Bowen, who had the beating of him too many times. Will be relieved not to be facing West Ham again any time soon. 5
Kovacic: Solid enough in the middle, anticipating plenty and moving the ball on. The odd lapse did throw City into some vulnerable positions though. 7
Silva: A masterclass, covering every blade of grass and popping up exactly where he needed to be all of the time. Aside from a goal, he did everything. 9
De Bruyne: Lethal in the first 45 minutes with every touch, scaring the life out of West Ham. He too often gave the ball away in the second half. 7
Doku: Really bright on the ball, causing West Ham defenders all manner of problems with his dribbling. Always a useful option on the right. 7
Grealish: Complemented Doku well and worked intelligently with De Bruyne down the left, creating goalscoring opportunities that could have been taken. 7
Haaland: Two brilliant goals to see City take the lead twice. A spectator for much of the second half before netting his third for successive hat tricks. 9
Substitutes
Gundogan (for Doku, 68) Settled things down in midfield. 6
Nunes (for Grealish, 72) Lovely vision for the assist. 7
Walker (for Gvardiol, 88) No time
Ake (for De Bruyne, 88) No time
Not used: Ortega, Stones, Rodri, O'Reilly, McAtee

Player Ratings
GK: Ederson - 6/10 - Alert off his line to clear danger. Was rarely given trouble in way of shot-stopping.
RB: Rico Lewis - 7/10 - Seems to have relegated Walker to the bench with a series of fine performances in City's inverted right-back role. Credited with an assist for Haaland's second goal.
CB: Manuel Akanji - 6/10 - The Swiss defender's supreme technique and muscular build meant Antonio didn't break him into much of a sweat.
CB: Ruben Dias - 5/10 - A tad clumsy for the own goal and guilty of some skewed passing, but aside from that was largely fine.
LB: Josko Gvardiol - 6/10 - Put to work by Bowen down his side, even if the only tangible blemish on his record was allowing the cross for Dias' own goal.
DM: Mateo Kovacic - 6/10 - Bright in the first half but notably faded in the second when West Ham turned up the pressure. Not as strong or imposing as Rodri so that made sense.
CM: Bernardo Silva - 7/10 - Now clear of Cristiano Ronaldo (37), Bruno Fernandes (41) and Nani (43) as the Portuguese player with the most Premier League assists (44). Tidy and energetic as ever.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne - 7/10 - Now at the stage of his career where even if he's not chalking up goals or assists, De Bruyne is completely controlling the flow of the game without the need to take over from a physical perspective.
RW: Jeremy Doku - 7/10 - Tormented Emerson from the off. Hurried his way into space and down the touchline. Fizzed his crosses towards City bodies but didn't always find his man when he maybe should have.
CF: Erling Haaland - 10/10 - Now averaging over one goal-per-game in the Premier League, with 70 in 69 outings for City. Insane.
LW: Jack Grealish - 6/10 - A solid if safe return to the starting lineup for Grealish, who was quicker in releasing the ball than usual and knew when to bring others into play.
Substitutes
SUB: Ilkay Gundogan (68' for Doku) - 6/10
SUB: Matheus Nunes (72' for Grealish) - 7/10
SUB: Kyle Walker (88' for Gvardiol) - N/A
SUB: Nathan Ake (88' for De Bruyne) - N/A
Subs not used: Stefan Ortega (GK), John Stones, Rodri, Nico O'Reilly, James McAtee
Manager
Pep Guardiola - 7/10 - City had total control of the game for long stretches, though when they didn't they were alarmingly open. A good win on the board but still work to do for the long season ahead.

Player Ratings
Ederson (6/10):
Saw little action aside from the goal which he could do nothing about due to being wrong-footed.
Rico Lewis (7/10):
Highly involved in the attacks, nearly scoring himself as well as setting up Haaland's second.
Manuel Akanji (6/10):
Made a vital tackle on Michail Antonio to prevent an equaliser.
Ruben Dias (5/10):
Misjudged Jarrod Bowen's cross in a clumsy own goal in one of very few attacks he had to face. Helped Gvardiol out of a tricky situation later.
Josko Gvardiol (5/10):
Not tight enough on Bowen, didn't do much attacking.
Kevin De Bruyne (8/10):
Orchestrated City's best moves and unlucky not to score when he hammered the woodwork for the second game in a row.
Mateo Kovacic (6/10):
Played his part in the second goal but not always convincing defensively.
Bernardo Silva (7/10):
Energetic and incisive. His pressing sparked the first goal and his passing was spot-on.
Jeremy Doku (5/10):
Slowed down several promising moves with a bad touch or pass. Struggled on the right wing.
Erling Haaland (10/10):
He missed a good headed chance early on then spent the rest of the game making up for it. Each goal was impressive in its own way but his second was truly unstoppable.
Jack Grealish (6/10):
Looked well up for it and made an imposing start but couldn't make the most of his shooting chances.
Subs & Manager
Ilkay Gundogan (6/10):
Gave City the control they needed to see the game out.
Matheus Nunes (6/10):
Did well to set up Haaland's third with a good run and pass.
Kyle Walker (N/A):
Got his first minutes of the season late on.
Nathan Ake (N/A):
Brought on in the 89th minute.
Pep Guardiola (7/10):
An outstanding away display and was able to make his substitutions early. His side are top already, good luck to anyone trying to dislodge them.

Player Ratings
Ederson (5.5): As most City games, he did not have much to do. Not at fault for West Ham goal. Gets a rating for putting on his shirt and getting onto the pitch.
Rico Lewis (9): What did Guardiola do with this kid? Helped in city build up, dealt well with Kudus, assisted a goal and had a chance to score. Another great performance from the young right back.
Ruben Dias (4): Did not have anything to do most of the game but scored an own goal.
Manuel Akanji (6): Did not have much to do. Backed city press well and as always did his job competently.
Joško Gvardiol (5): Not the best performance of the Croatian. Did not add much in attack and failed to deal with Bowen all game.
Matteo Kovacic (8): Guardiola is turning Kovacic into Rodri. The Croatian helped City build up, recycled the ball, read the play well. Did not feel like Rodri is missing which is the best compliment to another very competent performance from Kovacic.
Jeremy Doku (6): As always with Doku, some good plays followed by some frustrating decision making. As expected was the first City player to be hooked off.
Bernardo Silva (8.5): Was everywhere. Helped City progress whenever West Ham had the courage to play high. His pressing led to Paqueta turnover. Assisted city first goal.
Kevin De Bruyne (9): A vintage KDB performance. Hit the post with a great shot, kept everything ticking and was at his sublime best. Helped with City interplay in tight spaces and had some line breaking passes. If he plays at this level all season, good luck to everyone.
Jack Grealish (7): A lively performance from the English winger. Tired Bissaka all game and had some very good combinations with Bernando Silva and De Bruyne on the left side. This wasthe best performance from Grealish from a long time.
Erlind Haaland (9.5): A goalscoring robot. He missed one easy chance though, hence the 9.5 and not a 10.
