Gianluigi Donnarumma – 7.5
Made a few solid saves but was largely untroubled throughout the full 90 minutes.
Matheus Nunes – 7
Nunes seems to be growing into the right-back role, remaining composed and impressing in playing out from the position.
John Stones – 7.5
A good performance from Stones who was able to keep the Villarreal forwards quiet.
Ruben Dias – 7.5
Similar to John Stones, worked well to lead the defence in keeping the oppositions forwards quiet.
Josko Gvardiol – 7
Defensively solid and comfortable in possession, contributing to City’s control at the back.
Nico – 7
Nico was impressive throughout the first half, dominating the midfield and showing promising signs before being substituted for Mateo Kovacic due to injury.
Rico Lewis – 7.5
A solid performance from the Englishman, excelling in his midfield role and managed to pick up an assist.
Bernardo Silva © – 8
Silva looked sharp throughout, linking play intelligently and capping a strong performance with a well-taken header
Savinho – 8.5 (POTM)
An excellent showing from City’s number 26, who was at his creative best this evening, assisting the second goal and troubling the Villarreal left-back’s, Alfonso Pedraza and Sergi Cardona throughout the game.
Erling Haaland – 8
The Norwegian was a constant threat up front, scoring the opener and playing a key role in City’s attacking play
Jeremy Doku – 6.5
Showed flashes of creativity but lacked end product in key moments.
Substitutes
Mateo Kovacic – 6.5
Offered control and composure in midfield after coming on.
Tijjani Reijnders – 6
Had limited time to majorly influence the game after coming on, however kept things tidy in the middle.
Oscar Bobb – 6
Did well to keep a hold of the ball after coming on, a safe performance.
Omar Marmoush – N/A
Rayan Cherki – N/A

Donnarumma: Made an important save in the second half to keep City in control, and was alert all evening. 8
Nunes: Brilliant at the back and even better working forward with Lewis and Savinho in the first half. 8
Dias: A harsh booking in the second half but otherwise kept on top of Villarreal threats with minimum fuss. 7
Stones: A class act strolling into midfield to help City whenever they were in possession, while knowing when he had to get back. 7
Gvardiol: A few sloppy passes drew Guardiola's ire on the touchline and he is still settling into the season. 6
Gonzalez: Looked good with terrific awareness of everything around him, although a concern that he had to hobble off. 7
Silva: Scored a goal and isn't called Haaland! Better than usual in attack and some key tackles from further back. 8
Lewis: Ran the game in the first half with Savinho, even if his influence faded as the second period wore on. 7
Savinho: One of his best games for City, with a big hand in two goals and nearly getting on the scoresheet as well. 8
Doku: Squandered an early chance in the box and wasn't able to have the same success as his fellow winger. 6
Haaland: A goal, inevitably, and he kept going all game in another all-action performance. The form of his life continues. 8
Substitutes
Kovacic (for Gonzalez, 57) Some excellent balls through for Haaland and others. 7
Reijnders (for Lewis, 72) He can carry the ball out of danger, but sometimes runs into it. 6
Bobb (for Doku, 72) Little to report. 6
Marmoush (for Savinho, 86) No time. 6
Cherki (for Haaland, 86) No time. 6

Gianluigi Donnarumma (7/10):
A passenger for most of the game but did well when called in to action and flew across his goal to turn away Gueye's effort.
Matheus Nunes (7/10):
Combined well with Savinho as City took the game right to the hosts and had none of his occasional lapses defensively.
Ruben Dias (6/10):
Had little to worry about until late in the second half when he mucked in to protect the clean sheet.
John Stones (7/10):
Villarreal's lack of pressing played right into his hands and he was able to maraud forward and help out the midfield.
Josko Gvardiol (5/10):
Lacked concentration at times and got a dressing down from Guardiola for sending a pass to an opponent.
Nico Gonzalez (7/10):
Looked very comfortable back in his homeland and meant that City barely noticed Rodri wasn't there. As cruel luck would have it, he looked in pain when he came off and could be set for a spell on the sidelines just as he was hitting form.
Rico Lewis (8/10):
Played a dictating role and exploited Villarreal's lack of intensity by running rings around them and causing havoc with his slick passing, including assisting Haaland's goal.
Bernardo Silva (7/10):
His tireless running and precision passing helped dissect the hosts.
Savinho (8/10):
Tormented Villareal in the first half with his trickery, also setting up Bernardo's goal.
Erling Haaland (8/10):
Had four chances and will be disappointed he only scored one of them. His glancing header was his worst miss, but he bounced back quickly to score his fourth Champions League goal in three games before being denied by two good saves late on.
Jeremy Doku (7/10):
Created a good chance to score in the opening minute and played his part in the early blitz.
Subs & Manager
Mateo Kovacic (5/10):
Got 33 minutes after a cameo against Everton, but his arrival coincided with Villarreal improving.
Tijjani Reijnders (6/10):
Linked up nicely with Haaland when he came on.
Oscar Bobb (6/10)
Got some joy down the right and created a half-chance for Reijnders.
Omar Marmoush (N/A):
Brought on late to make his first appearance since August.
Rayan Cherki (N/A):
Brought on in the 86th minute.
Pep Guardiola (7/10):
Watched his side walk all over Villarreal and quickly put the game to bed, although he will be a bit concerned with how they sat off later in the game.

Gianluigi Donnarumma-7/10: A typical Donnarumma performance. Made a crucial save when he needed to and rarely lets his team down.
Matheus Nunes-7.5/10: Nunes is showing that he belongs at Manchester City. Played well again and looks to be growing in confidence. Credit must go to him for how well he’s played of late.
John Stones-8/10: I thought Stones was one of Manchester City’s best players on the night. Stepped into midfield when his team had possession and showed a reminder of his quality when he is fit.
Ruben Dias-7.5/10: Another good performance from Dias. Marshalled the City defence well and is in a rich vein of form of late.
Josko Gvardiol-6.5/10: Stepped in at left-back and did his job well. Did what he had to do in a serviceable showing.
Nico-7.5/10: Played well in midfield before being substituted after he picked up an injury. The hope is that Nico hasn’t suffered a serious injury, given how important he is to Pep Guardiola’s side.
Rico Lewis-7.5/10: Grabbed an assist when he set up Erling Haaland’s opening goal. Took up some dangerous positions in midfield before he was taken off in a good performance from Lewis.
Bernardo Silva-7/10: Scored his team’s second goal and put in a captain’s display.
Savinho-8.5/10: Arguably Manchester City’s man-of-the-match on the night. Grabbed an assist and played a key role in Manchester City’s opening goal. He is seemingly working his way into the season well after a slow beginning.
Jeremy Doku-5.5/10: A similar performance from Doku to the one that he put in against Everton. Had the opportunities to make an impact, but he couldn’t beat his man or deliver in the final third.
Erling Haaland-7.5/10: Scored Manchester City’s opening goal and put himself about before he was substituted.
Substitutes
Mateo Kovacic-6.5/10: Replaced Nico in the 56th minute and had some nice touches, and will be better for the run.
Oscar Bobb-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.
Tijjani Reijnders-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.
Omar Marmoush-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.
Rayan Cherki-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.

Exceptional in defence and even better supporting the attack with Lewis and Savinho in the first half.

Received an unfortunate booking in the second half but otherwise managed Villarreal's threats with ease.

A few careless passes earned him Guardiola's displeasure on the sidelines, indicating he is still finding his feet this season.
Nico Gonzalez - 7
Showed great awareness and looked sharp, though there were concerns as he had to limp off.
Bernardo Silva - 8
A Man City goalscorer not named Haaland! A smart headed finish. Impressive in attack and made some crucial tackles.

One of his finest performances for City, playing a major role in two goals and nearly scoring himself.

Missed an early opportunity in the box and couldn't replicate the success of his fellow winger.
