Manchester United have been told to pay £40million for Juan Mata after the champions stepped up their interest in the Chelsea outcast.

Despite posturing from both clubs, Chelsea are willing to sell the Spanish playmaker if United match their valuation — and David Moyes is believed to be on the brink of making an offer.

The deal is complicated because Chelsea still have an interest in Wayne Rooney, but United will not sell the striker.

That does not mean Moyes wants to offload Wayne Rooney. United are  prepared to bite the bullet and let Rooney run down his contract until 2015 if he continues to turn down talks on a new deal. He has worked well with Moyes and the hope is he will be convinced to stay by the manager’s summer dealings.

The only hope for mata to excel is during CL.. which.. CL JM play a more direct and possession football compare PL a more pressing proactive football...

I have to disagree, I think he is first team player. A playmaker who's has great speed and defensive work rate. He has that wide spot wrapped up for himself. There's a reason why he starts most matches. I wasn't too excited about his arrival initially, but now I can see how he contributes to the team. Sure he miss some passed here and there, but he most than makes up for it IMO. He has been important player so far, especially with the team relying on individual efforts.

Look they can have Mata but only if they give us Rooney in exchange as a part of the deal.

If we just sell Mata to them without getting anything in return i'd be VERY VERY disappointed especially with how they hard balled us with Rooney in the summer.

Personally, I'd rather not strengthen a rival. We're not the gunners. Look at what Van persie did for them last year.
