I'm still loooking for a good deal for Ryoga. Contemplating between Ryoga 1016 or CQ101.
*
Any of those would be a good choice. Just depends on your taste and preferences.

I went to kepong tackle the other day. The lady said TCE Sports is going to do clearance sales for Ryoga, but without warranty. But so far no stock or news yet. sad.gif
*
hmm.. parts for ryoga shouldn't be too difficult to procure. Only issue to check is the drag clicker. it should click when drag is engaged.

QUOTE(pskk @ Jul 4 2015, 08:58 PM)
Hi All,

Id been around here lurking a long time already. Usually quiet unless i hv something to say. I luv fishing and had been doing it a long time already. But currently in hiatus fro the past 2 yrs due to family commitments and work.
I just want to share w you guys my story abt the 1st time i went offshore fishing in a boat.

I was then in my 1st job and made friend w a colleague who was abt the same age as me. He shared lots of stories and tales abt his fishing exploits. I still remember one of his tale till today....wl tell you shortly.

Anyway asked him to organise a boat trip which he did and we went w 4 of my friends ( all no experience in ocean fishing, we all fish fm sea shore only ) and him. Let's just call him the experienced guy. He gave us lots of tips on what to buy or use during the trip.

Boat ride took abt 1.5 hrs, i estimate maybe abt 18 nautical miles. Not far fm Pulau Kendi Penang. When tekong anchored the boat, he look at us and smiled before going to rest. All of us was so excited, I was using an Abu 3000 BC reel + a newly bought shimano 5" rod ( cant remember the model dee ) and we quickly rigged our baits and drop it into the sea.

About 5 mins later, one of my friend said....wah water so deep...bait why so long cant reach the ocean floor. I echoed his sentiments cos my line was still running out and cant seem to stop. The experienced guy just replied, dont worry just keep on letting the line go and it will reach the ocean floor. Another 5 mins but my line just kept going so I just decided to stop the line and wait. No surprises when there was no bite at all among all of us.

abt an hour later, 3 of my friends was vomiting because of seasickness. So we asked the tekong to move us near Pulau Kendi. At Pulau Kendi, we had loads of fun cos the water was only 10" deep and it was a haven for baby groupers...tons of different grouper species.

Suddenly I had a huge take....I shouted to my friends...big one big one.....I was pumping the rod up and down and up and down....my friends were all watching me ...then the line snapped and my rod broke into 2. The tekong who was also watching due to the commotion was smiling at me AGAIN. I had to sit and watched my friends fish for the rest of the trip.

Looking back, I realise the tekong was not smiling at us...he was more like grinning and chuckling cos our weights were too light to fish according to the water current that day. And he was not smiling at me when I broke my rod either. After gaining more experience, I know now how to differentiate between a snag and a bite for boat fishing. Painful lessons.

My 2nd offshore fishing trip was abt 1.5 yrs later when I joined another company and met another colleague who organised a trip to Tukun Perak.
As for the fishing tale the experienced guy told me...well I copied his tale and made it my own and told my new colleague and his friends during the 2nd trip.
It goes like this, once I was fishing in Yan, Kedah and I caught the biggest tenggiri i had ever seen....it took me abt 30 mins to land the tenggiri but the most shiok and frightening this was that the tenggiri was pulling the boat round and round till i landed it. My audience just ask me how big was the fish and i opened both my arms wide. and they smiled at me without a single word.
Well i know they weren't smiling at me back then but chuckling and grinning.

I had painful lessons while learning how to fish. But once I learnt how to be humble and also apple polishing and I managed to learn quite a lot from my fishing friends who turned into fishing buddies now.
Tukun Perak.....back then was wow...sailfish everywhere, most of the trevally species....if u lucky can spot whale shark + giant manta rays.

thanks for sharing!

By the way, do any of you have problems (finger pain due to abrasion) casting using braided? I think i might encounter that if i cast for many hours on braided.

Hello to all the sifus here..
I've just decided to pick up this hobby....So went and got a 2500 reel loaded with 15lb braid and a 5'6" rod as recomended by tackle shop.
Looking to spend some time at Jugra ponds and would like some advice...
1. what other accessories are needed ? grip ? net to hold fish ?. I am looking for light as will probably using bike..
Most paid ponds will have net available. Else a cheap fish grip will do. Just make sure the grip is strong and doesn't open easily. I have a seahawk grip and it's OK for the price paid.
2. any recomendations for best lures to use here?
Lures depends on the fishing that you do. Soft plastic is the best all rounder lure to be used.
3. Do you guys use bags to keep/carry your rods so as not to damage them?
Some rods comes with their own bag. Care should be taken to avoid scratching your rod blank and make sure the rings are not damaged.
4. anything I should do to new rod and reel before using?
Nope.

Additional thing to learn is the uni knot and fg knot.

Sorry for the newbie questions but looking forward to some help...Thanks

Thanks inv.
So it seems I will need a grip only.
The reason I asked about the lures is because of the large  variety you can find in a tackle shop. Thirty years ago, you only had some spoons and maybe plastic frogs only.
I will probably cast and retrieve so was looking at some lures i could keep in my bag.
Thought if there were some favorites you could recommend...read about Berkley Powerbait Rattle shrimp or Rapala rattling rap...are these any good?
May also jalan2 cari haruan, so was hoping for some suggestions for best type of plastic frogs to get....so many type of frogs nowadays?
I suppose a spinner would be good to have as well...
Thanks again..

Regarding lures, it's all about the target species. Most of the time, the target species is us, anglers, instead. Hahaha.. On a serious note, these days I swear by duel sinking minnows and lucky craft wanders for cichlas. DUO lures are effective as well.

Personally, Berkley grubs in white or black is a must have. Works well with a variety of species.

I've never worked plastic frogs before, can't suggest any, sorry.

I don't have much luck with spinners and bushwacker before as well.

Got some lures based on the advice here....and damaged some nails changing the treble hooks to circle ones (the end one, I have removed the center hook)..
Will it affect the swim movement?
just another thought...do you clip the lures directly to the snap at the end of the leader or is it better to use a short line with loop?
Am looking to visit the Jugra ponds but a bit confused as there seem to be a few, which would you guys recommend? What i understand is that you can choose CNR or pay for the fish caught. As I'm beginner, I think best to go with the fish and pay. Do they allow lures at the ponds?
Any suggestions?
Thanks...

Most Japanese lures are tuned, if you match the weight of the new hook to the original, then it should work fine.

I usually use snaps for faster lure change.

I think soft plastics will work well in Jugra.

Guys, what braided are you using and how long does yours last?
I have a spool of Ajiking braid which i used for one time at the Banting siakap pond and its fuzzy on the first foot of the line.
There's no nick or damage on my guides and rod so im wondering whats causing it.

The same thing happened to another braided line where i use it at Seksyen 24. Rod tip and guides are fine so im wondering whats causing it and is it normal when used just once. As far as i know there's no contact with rocks when fishing in both ponds.
*
I'm using duel x4. Very thin diameter braid but doesn't handles nicks very well. Doesn't fuzz.
