Hi, i would like to get some input from all the sifu's here. smile.gif

I'm looking to get MBP with retina screen (Rm4,099) but would like to find out if it will fit my needs.

This laptop is mainly for my studies so portability and light weight is a must. I already have a desktop at home and that will be the main PC.

My main concerns are:
1) Office applications whether it differs a lot between Windows and Mac since this is the most important thing for me. If it is, i will need to run Windows as well. Is Mac smooth with Windows?
2 2.6GhZ/8Gb/128GB should be enough right?
3) I was initially looking at PC's but then ultrabook prices are almost the same as Mac so i thought of trying Mac. Lenovo Yoga 2 was the closest to Mac that i could find but i'm very fussy when it comes to built quality and the sharpness of the screen biggrin.gif
4) Mac able to use normal pirated software like Windows?

Hello wink.gif

1) Office from windows quite similar to Mac, but of you do thesis, better get microsoft office. There is Mac version for Microsoft office smile.gif No need to run windows to run windows office.
2) Yep should be enough.
3) Yep, retina display is the best among others laptop hehe wink.gif
4) Ehem, we can't talk about pirated software like here..But well, ehem ehem  icon_rolleyes.gif
*
1) Definitely will get Office, i'm so used to it but is the Mac version equally as capable as Windows version? How about opening the same file in Windows?
3) Yup, it's lovely
4) biggrin.gif i'll take it as a yes

Thanks. smile.gif

1) yes there is microsoft office for mac....but 2011 version la tongue.gif sometimes i do see a few quirks on the mac version...format lari la, apa la...not all the time n nothing major la. i'd recommend install windows anyway n use windows version of office.

4) just make sure u enable the setting to allow apps to install from any download source smile.gif
*
Yea to be safe, i'll keep a windows version also. biggrin.gif

Also i just had a random thought, lets say i want to open a file that is stored in Mac OS, can it be accessible if i'm on Windows? Or it's both separated?

for VM (parallels, fusion, etc. preferable if you wont run intensive tasks for windows) then yes. u can make it 'open' or just specify which folder to share.

for bootcamp (correct me if im wrong..didnt use bootcamp for years now so maybe im quite outdated), u can install an app that enables windows to read the OSX partition.

another way (i prefer, if bootcamp la) is to have 3 partitions... 1 for OSX, 1 for windows bootcamp, 1 shared partition (fat32, or NTFS but need to install app to enable OSX to read/write on NTFS).

Alright, thanks for the tips smile.gif

hi there, regarding office for mac I'm using one and so far there is no problem opening the file on windows and vice versa.. just make sure the compatibility between older version of office if you plan to use one.. I'm using both, macbook for portability (work mainly) and a stationary PC at home.. but to run multi OS i think 128gb is a bit small imho.. 256gb is recommended but if you only run OS X alone and not in need in windows compatible only software it should be fine with 128gb.. just use whatever external storage to store all your file (you going to transfer them between your windows machine anyway if needed) or use cloud storage.. (dropbox etc.) i jump on using mac in july this year and so far doesn't feel the need to run both OS on a single machine.. i can open my work happily on both my computer.. i work mainly with Adobe CC (illustrator, photoshop, lightroom) and microsoft office and so far no compatibility issues for me..

Sounds good, may be i'll try with Mac first and see how it goes. For me storage is not an issue since i have a cloud, external HDD and a PC at home. As long it does not cause any compatibility issue between both the OS, i'm happy. Thanks smile.gif

Guys, how many GB does the maverick OS consume? Still in between of crossroads whether i should get 128GB or 256GB since OS and apps get larger over time with updates. Google says 5.3GB, is it correct?

Hello, would like to get opinions from someone who only uses MBPr for excel, word, power point, surfing and opening pdf files. I've read reviews that Office for Mac is not really good.

I'm only going to use the laptop for my assignments (excel, word, power point) or some light surfing, may be 2-3 times a week the most since i already have a desktop.

How long do Macs last and generally are they more problem free that other manufacturers?

Kind of at crossroads now to get this or stay with windows..... but each time i pass a Mac store, the poison is so so strong tongue.gif

Hi there. This is my opinion of the rMBP. Bought it last month and loving it. All the while a PC user.

Pros.
1. Retina display, high res, beautiful. Looking at normal monitors is not so nice anymore. I am a photographer and somehow all my old photos I created since 2004 is very much nicer now than before. The best LCD i have prior to rMBP was the Dell Studio series, and now even that is not on par with retina display.
2. Battery life. i5/13/8gb/256ssd. So far with 51 cycles still achieving 97% capacity of 6330mAh. Runtime around 8 hours is normal. With light surfing not much power usage with safari. Games on the other hand uses much more processing power so around 5 hours. Charging is also quick, its probably just a tad after 1 hour from 15%.
3. Bundled software, with the mac version of word/excel/powerpoint/. I am liking the mac's pages/numbers/keynote. Easy to use and learn. I am relying less and less on my PC now. On top of that, there is garangeband, iPhoto, and many2 other softwares that help me move along the day smoothly.
4. Trackpad. Mac uses gestures and with 1 to 4 fingers, a lot of commands can be given. Its customisable too. With PC or a PC notebook, a mouse is a minimum for work. With rMBP its easy peasy with just the trackpad and gestures command. Easy to learn and master and very responsive.
5. No fear of virus attacks however malware is a concern. Apple tackles the virus issues at their side. Any issues, updated will be released and Mac auto updates seamlessly. For malware, there are good software to combat the issues and most are free downloadable from apple store itself.
6. On most parts, whatever can be achieved by PC can also be done on the MAC, but somehow the MAC does it easier though. Its more user friendly. Of course, being a new MAC user, one does need time to familiarise the commands etc but once you know how the MAC ticks, you are good to go.
7. Seamless sync with all your other Apple product. My iPad, iPod, iPhone sync in unison now.
8. Multiple desktop and multiple platform. I can now do multitude of tasks on different desktops which is cool. Also with proper software can also run windows on it. I wanted to do that previously but now do not see the need though. I am happy with just MAC. If I do want to get files or use softwares on the windows I use remote desktop instead. And its way easier to configure in MAC than in windows.

Cons.
1. Expensive softwares from the app store. Games are even more expensive. But I don't mind so much as I play my games on my iPad.IPad games are much much cheaper.
2. Extra effort in taking care of the casing. Sleek aluminium casing promotes scratches, dings etc. So manhandling the unit is a no-no.
3. rMBP does not come with any accessories except the power adapter , a cable and thats it. So prepare to fork out some RM for suitable bag/sleeves/for the notebook.
4. Does not have a built in dvd rom drive and apples' own version is expensive at RM249. If you need one, then any one from samsung or LG is recommended at just RM100 a pop.
5. Thunderbolt ready accessories still cost a bomb but usb3 is also fast enough.
6. Current versions of rMBP is not upgradeable unlike its predecessors, as the ram, processors etc are all soldered/mounted to the board. So when buying, think carefully what u need. My advise is get the best bang for your buck.
7. Certain websites with shockwave can't be displayed with MAC properly. So do expect this disadvantage. Nonetheless, my banking and most of my surfing areas are good to go.

I think thats covers it. Indeed Apple products is expensive, and yes it does have its limitations, but what it can do it does it with ease and proper. Best Rm4600 i've spent on a apple product  biggrin.gif

Good luck in your choices. All the best.

Thank you for the detailed insight. smile.gif

Some questions:
1) Just curious on item 3, pages/numbers/keynote, do u feel any limitation compared to Office for PC? Can it be opened in Office for PC? This is my main concern actually since it's going to be meant for my assignments.
2) Is it a good time to get MBPr or the 2015 models will be out soon?
3) For those sites that can play shockwave properly (although there are Adobe Flash for Mac), what sites are these?
4) I know in the past Mac generally do last longer than PC but how about nowadays?

If i get it, it's defintely the 13" with 256Gb.. around Rm4399 if i remember correctly for students. biggrin.gif

Hi. I use that 3 software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) a lot for my daily works at office. For me, those software are almost the same like Windows version eventhough they are Office 2011 version. I'm using Office 365 btw.
Heard that Office for Mac will be upgraded in 2015. So Office 365 will get the updates, as long as the license is still not expired.

That's good news, thanks smile.gif

IMHO..

1) I do not whether both have all the same functions. As for me what I want to use is there in the MAC version, after a while it gets easier IMO. The files can be converted to and fro but sometimes its not perfect as both uses different settings/fonts etc. You could use 365 for a fee though.
2) I have no idea whats in store for the 2015 models. hmm.gif
3) I was referring to a general note. So far surfing is no issues for me with safari on MAC.
4) I have yet to experience the reliability of MACs since I am also new to this system. Most probably the first to go on the mac would be the battery. And when that happens usually other stuff will start to degrade etc. From what I have searched through the net, the lifespan for a MPB would be around 4 -7 years depending on the level of TLC it received from the user. For me thats good enough as based on previous encounters with PCs, with the advancement of hardware as well as softwares will eventually make you want to change or upgrade.

All the best in your choices.

Hi all, for Office on MBPr, is there any problems between saving the file in Mac and Windows? I'm worried if there will be compatibility issues if i use both OS for Office programs. I also heard Office 2016 is out for Mac, anyone tried it?

Secondly, 2016 MBPr is out early or mid of 2016?

Not sure if i saw wrongly or not, MBPr used to start at Rm4399 or Rm4099 early of the year right?

You did not see wrong. It used to be RM4099 (I forgot d) for the basic rMBP 13', but after GST and price adjustment from our Ringgit, it is now sitting at its current pricing at RM4769 nod.gif
Of course the model now is rocking the Intel Iris Graphics 6100 and also the Force Touch trackpad

I see, it's an updated version. Thanks for clarifying.

Just need to confirm with Mac users on their Office experience with Mac before placing an order.

256GB seems better but another extra Rm700 to fork out doesn't seem nice. biggrin.gif

I am using MS Office 2016 for Mac by Office 365 Personal.

It's better than MS Office 2011 for Mac which I have bought the license.

Reviews mentioned that as well but do you use Office for Windows in other PCs as well?

I've read about MS Office 2011 that is quite behind in terms of functions compared to Office for Windows.

yup. but it's more to simple problems that are not addressed properly rather than lacking some functions.

for eg:

1) you can't directly open attachment that are embedded in Microsoft Words, unlike Office for Windows.
2) Outlook has sync issues when you upgrade to El Capitan. (imo recently got patch to solve this).
3) You can't resize image in Outlook email's body.

These surprisingly are not yet solved by Microsoft and Apple.

How about compatibility between both OS? Any missing parts or errors in the document when opened in either one of the OS?

I'm planning to use MBPr when i'm on the move and use my Windows desktop when i'm home so i'm worried about the features compatibility.

compatibility should not be a problem. smile.gif

when saving an Office document (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc) in Mac, they will have a Compatibility Check function to make sure.
