Ok, thanks for the tips. Yamaha calls it "Extra Bass" and can be easily accessed in the option menu - much better than messing around with the speaker setups!!  :thumbsup:

Hello sifus, I am a noob to home theater stuff and want to ask a question about HT audio.

I am currently using a cheap no brand av receiver with 5 speaker setup (no subwoofer) with astro byond and blu ray as output to the lg plasma tv with optical out to the av receiver.

astro byond---hdmi--->

                                      tv----optical out (PCM)--->optical to rca converter--->av receiver-->5 speaker

blu ray player-hdmi--->

The question here is why does my speakers sometime output to 2 or 5 speakers eventhough optical PCM can only support max 2.0ch?

It's not really a problem but I find it a bit consistent when changing channels.

I have tried using a 5.1 test video via blu ray and confirmed it's not true 5 ch output.

No problem. I was into HT a lot more as well. I am currently using raspberry pi2 with volumio as media player. Is very clean sound. Of course with NUC a better CPU will be even better

The drivers are subject to vibration, a lot of it, and the bolts become loose. You will be surprised how loose some the bolts have become over time.

Without front a HT is really bad

Oh... almost forgot. If you do test with the plugs, do NOT insert too much into the port because it will be difficult to remove the plug if it "drops" inside the "hole".

Windows weakness is because it's Windows. That is why audiophile prefer Mac or Linux

You know the funny thing is, microidiots actually had a very decent audio stack with Win XP? But they JUST have to decide to destroy everything with Vista, 7 and partly 8. 8.1 improved the audio stack in windows a little bit, 10 is more or less what 8.1 did but more streamlined but still isn't as robust as WinXP was.
And yes, the original fat PS3 that was launched (60GB and 20GB models) actually had decent audio playback with SACD support.

Hmmmm good idea.....using a Y splitter...wont it change the lfe output impedance???

I was told by one hifi outlet that speaker cable after 8-10years the sound quality will become flat. How true is it.

How can you tell by just listening ?
