Did you friend own any japanese cars around 15-20yrs old for him to make that statement?

Here's my experience;
I've owned both a 1982 & 1990 corolla both didnt need any repairs which I'd call "high". My 1994 BMW however is a different story. Now with a 2003 Altis.

My advice, you cant go wrong with a decent taken care of SEG. Parts are also abundant & very affordable.
*
So far any issue with your Altis 2003 ?

1.8G Auto ?

I am also looking at Altis Manual or Auto too now.

Budget, up to rm35k , year 2006 max out on my budget.

Thanks

Hi guys just want to ask, is 2003/up bmw 318/325i/520/525i worth buying? How much must I cough out in the long run for maintenance? Is there anyway to check for the service record? Any recommended dealer to purchase? Tx u.
*
I was looking at 318 due to its lower roadtax , price also not high, below rm25k but if shits happens, your problem will begin.

Its basically a gamble for driving premium make cars , handling & confort will pawn any japs car easily but scare the cost of maintenance & sourcing of replacement parts.

QUOTE(zenix @ Oct 17 2015, 10:18 AM)
You can't really go wrong with an Altis as they're cheap to maintain and reliable, just that they're expensive to buy due to good RV. So it isn't a great used car choice unless you're okay with an older car, paying more for it, but "enjoy" buying parts cheaper and having a reliable car.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.6 - if you want something different you can consider a Lancer, one of the few models in which rarity doesn't mean you don't have parts support. Because many parts are interchangeable with Waja & Wira you don't need to worry about running out of cheap parts anytime soon. If you want to avoid Proton sub-par quality parts the spare parts available for Mitsubishi here in Malaysia is ridiculous so don't worry about the maintenance bit.

2009 Nissan Latio 1.8 - as explained in my previous post this is a bang for your buck car, to match with your budget of course you've gotta look for older models but 2009 is still very much newer than your original plan for a 2003 Altis, right?

*
Thanks for the feedback.

This Lancer is the younger brother of Wira which Proton did not took over but instead went on to develope Waja rite ?

Abt Latio, is it better than Sentra 1.6/1.8 of the 2007 era ?

Why are you not recommending the Preve? It has more safety net compared to Persona and Inspira, such as brake assist, traction control and stability control

One thing I would like to mention abt newer Proton is the Lotus enhanced handling.

It even beat the latest Japs Civic, not to mention the God Car Vios.

If not for your posting above, I wont knoe that Toyota Altis have the most overall complaint on year 2009 model & the 2002 model on excessive engine oil usage [ makan minyak engine ].

Thanks for your input. I wont look for either of these models as for now.

And this line is really TRUE !!!

QUOTE(Chrix @ Oct 25 2015, 09:58 AM)

Here is some feedback from an actual 1zzfe Altis owner, other than topping up oil every month (about 500ml) is really isn't a big deal. There isn't any smoke from the exhaust, no oil on the spark plugs either. For the price of the car now, you wont find another on par from features to easy of maintenance cost to resale value. Even with oil consumption issues & a leaking intake gasket, RM40 worth of petrol still gets me 200km+ in 100% KL city driving. Look at how many first gen Altis are actually on the road.

As for the remarks on "blindly believe them like it is a religion", it goes both ways. Believing someone else's comments without them actually experiencing it themselves first hand is just ignorance wink.gif
*
Any remedy for the excessive engine oil consumption ?

Will this also happen to a 3ZZ-FE engine ?

Any user of 3ZZ-FE Engine that care to imput ?

Thanks

If I were you, e46, worry later , drive & feel the "song" first.

Just my 2 cents opinion.

Am looking at 318i too, due to its lower roadtax & abundant used replacement parts available at potong shop

The current Civic is reliable and boring.
Much like the Altis it has somewhat sporty looks and ganas bodykit from the manufacturer but it is all show and no go.
Even the usual guys like Spoon, HKS, Mugen, etc. don't have much aftermarket stuff for it.
The new Civic coming will be a game changer, you might want to wait, you don't wannabe paying a loan for the next 5 years for a car that has no soul.
You're talking about in Malaysia or overseas?
Remember that a good car is just half the problem, is it well supported within your area is another.
The Neo is somewhat a safe choice, the engine is pretty gutless especially the automatic version so the performance can't match the looks if you intend to dress it up nicely. However, for a young person I think this 2 door coupe is fine, and you can get one of year 2011 and above which makes it younger which always is a plus.

Nissan Latio Sedan or Hatch is a decent choice if you want to stay away from Proton and Perodua within your budget but the cars will at least need to be 2009 models which would make them pretty old, which I don't recommend for first time car buyers as you don't have the experience to handle minor repairs or find good workshops -- just driving to any workshop usually can get the job done either temporarily or permanently but cost of repairs would depend on the mechanic's mood if he wanna charge you an arm or leg or not.

Was it a direct upgrade from Sentra, C segment ?

For 30k, a first gen altis is probably the best you can do. Good fc, decent interior space, parts are abundant, any workshop can work on them. 40+ u can get the facelift first gen.

A civic es model should also be good, although not many can be seen on the road.
*
I too have this idea , rm30k for a 2003/2004 1.8G Altis , replacement parts abundant too

However after taking into considerations, why not try Conti for once since its still within my budget of rm30k, I am looking at year 98/99 W202 [ 2.0/2.2/2.5 ] decent ones around rm20k. or BMW e36 year 95/96/97 decent ones around rm20k or maybe BMW E46 year 00/01/02 decent ones up to 35k.

I understand that the upkeep of these Conti might be much higher, but then again YOLO , why so conservative if you can still afford it ?

Btw, I am driving a 1997 Wira manual currently

2012 PEUGEOT 408 2.0(A) -50k
2012 Chevrolet Cruze 1.8 LT Sedan Premium - 46k

2012 Mazda 2 1.5 - 40k
2012 Peugeot 3008 1.6 (A) Turbo  - 50k

many of these are used to be 100k car, especially those conti

Just go for SYLPHY 2.0.

But remember resale valeu will be low , infact all the cars you listed will have a low resale value.

Thanks for the long long input shocking.gif
yeah, i do hv persona in mind but i stay in Penang which car price is abit higher. Maybe not a 2013 but 2011 persona nod.gif i'm considering a 2004/05 Vios too for their well known low fc VVT-i but it's so old already 10 years+ doh.gif . Between this 2 cars consider both cost the same, which will be a better choice? i'm buying it for a long run, about 7~10 years. In terms of yearly maintenance, cost of parts and insurance/loading fees, which one cheaper to maintain?  hmm.gif
*
Goodness sake, go for the God car , ie, Toyota Vios. 10year old is nothing considering its a Toyota, even your dad's Wira [ Mitsubishi ] still outrun many newer cars now.
