Did you friend own any japanese cars around 15-20yrs old for him to make that statement?

Here's my experience;
I've owned both a 1982 & 1990 corolla both didnt need any repairs which I'd call "high". My 1994 BMW however is a different story. Now with a 2003 Altis.

My advice, you cant go wrong with a decent taken care of SEG. Parts are also abundant & very affordable.

Iris maybe.... But why not persona? Myvi x also ok.... But myvi is such a boring car. Body roll easily at 40...

But one good thing is air conditioning manyak kuat!

You can't really go wrong with an Altis as they're cheap to maintain and reliable, just that they're expensive to buy due to good RV. So it isn't a great used car choice unless you're okay with an older car, paying more for it, but "enjoy" buying parts cheaper and having a reliable car.

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.6 - if you want something different you can consider a Lancer, one of the few models in which rarity doesn't mean you don't have parts support. Because many parts are interchangeable with Waja & Wira you don't need to worry about running out of cheap parts anytime soon. If you want to avoid Proton sub-par quality parts the spare parts available for Mitsubishi here in Malaysia is ridiculous so don't worry about the maintenance bit.

2009 Nissan Latio 1.8 - as explained in my previous post this is a bang for your buck car, to match with your budget of course you've gotta look for older models but 2009 is still very much newer than your original plan for a 2003 Altis, right?

Please beware of ''fake'' lancer that originally is Inspira but converted body and parts become a ''real'' Lancer.

Btw 50k roughly can get Civic FD/FD2

Why are you not recommending the Preve? It has more safety net compared to Persona and Inspira, such as brake assist, traction control and stability control

Toyota has built a pretty good reputation for itself but don't just blindly believe them like it is a religion.

Here is some feedback from an actual 1zzfe Altis owner, other than topping up oil every month (about 500ml) is really isn't a big deal. There isn't any smoke from the exhaust, no oil on the spark plugs either. For the price of the car now, you wont find another on par from features to easy of maintenance cost to resale value. Even with oil consumption issues & a leaking intake gasket, RM40 worth of petrol still gets me 200km+ in 100% KL city driving. Look at how many first gen Altis are actually on the road.

As for the remarks on "blindly believe them like it is a religion", it goes both ways. Believing someone else's comments without them actually experiencing it themselves first hand is just ignorance

8. Remarks : Right now I'm torn between 1st gen mazda 6 (2006 model year), e46 318i/320i (2004 model year), suzuki grand vitara (2007-2009 model).

The current Civic is reliable and boring.
Much like the Altis it has somewhat sporty looks and ganas bodykit from the manufacturer but it is all show and no go.
Even the usual guys like Spoon, HKS, Mugen, etc. don't have much aftermarket stuff for it.
The new Civic coming will be a game changer, you might want to wait, you don't wannabe paying a loan for the next 5 years for a car that has no soul.
You're talking about in Malaysia or overseas?
Remember that a good car is just half the problem, is it well supported within your area is another.
The Neo is somewhat a safe choice, the engine is pretty gutless especially the automatic version so the performance can't match the looks if you intend to dress it up nicely. However, for a young person I think this 2 door coupe is fine, and you can get one of year 2011 and above which makes it younger which always is a plus.

Nissan Latio Sedan or Hatch is a decent choice if you want to stay away from Proton and Perodua within your budget but the cars will at least need to be 2009 models which would make them pretty old, which I don't recommend for first time car buyers as you don't have the experience to handle minor repairs or find good workshops -- just driving to any workshop usually can get the job done either temporarily or permanently but cost of repairs would depend on the mechanic's mood if he wanna charge you an arm or leg or not.

For 30k, a first gen altis is probably the best you can do. Good fc, decent interior space, parts are abundant, any workshop can work on them. 40+ u can get the facelift first gen.

A civic es model should also be good, although not many can be seen on the road.

Want to buy a new/used car. Saw these list of cars on carlist. Any sifu can recommend whether it's worth buying? or better off a new car? conti car is quite attractive but heard maintenance fee expensive.

yeah, i do hv persona in mind but i stay in Penang which car price is abit higher. Maybe not a 2013 but 2011 persona i'm considering a 2004/05 Vios too for their well known low fc VVT-i but it's so old already 10 years+ . Between this 2 cars consider both cost the same, which will be a better choice? i'm buying it for a long run, about 7~10 years. In terms of yearly maintenance, cost of parts and insurance/loading fees, which one cheaper to maintain?

my sole reason is just that i want to try own the german car (bmw and merc got no car less than 20k in tht price bracket)
