It was raining the other day and i didn't have an umbrella with me so i waited at the building entrance.

A nice lady came up and offered to share her umbrella, and I could finally cross the road without getting wet.

I have decided to pass on this act of kindness and will offer people who are stranded if i come across any of them.

It so happens i am an uni student too, so i have also decided to make this subject of sharing my project - something like a social project that promotes sharing.

I have created a simple survey, and i would appreciate it a lot if you guys could spare 3 mins to fill it in?

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1WxPkEEmkOW...kJJuLM/viewform

It is interesting to find out how many people do really share their umbrellas, and the reasons as well as opinions behind such sharing.

mods, pls inform me if this is inappropriate, thanks!

EDIT: After taking into consideration some of your feedback on the length of the survey, I have made the open ended parts NOT COMPULSORY. so you can simply tick the MCQ and click NEXT if u wanna skip the open ended. Thanks!

i would think that the unwillingness to share stems from an asian mindset, not just here but also in other asian countries.

while safety is a major factor, i think its more of the worry of being awkward/unsure that holds people back

think this kind of mindset may need 1-2 generations to change, if it ever does.

what's your opinion on this?

Done. Sharing is caring. However, with the current safety issue in our country.. It's not wise to do so.

So.. we're all come down to the same reason = safety

hmm

i cannot say if westerners are more likely to share, but i feel that asians generally have a more conservative mindset

although it may be unwise to extrapolate this generalization over to different cultures, it would appear that the things that asians generally say and do are more "protective" of ourselves. maybe its the environment and society that made asians more "guarded" and "skeptical" of good intentions

like what many said, crime is a big concern

what if share already kena robbed? shocking.gif

Why is the survey so long shakehead.gif sweat.gif shocking.gif I usually don't carry umbrella + mine is the type that is for one person, so can't share anyway. Unless I know that person or if they're a girl, I probably won't share it even if my umbrella can fit hmm.gif

And it's hardly true that westerners share their umbrella, I've been to Europe, Australia, NZ, while they're generally nice people and will help if you approach them, I never had anyone offer to share an umbrella with me, but I've someone giving me their umbrella before while I was waiting out the rain at a store icon_rolleyes.gif

The only place where I had someone offering to share their umbrella with me was in South Korea. I find Koreans to be very helpful and nice, a guy not only share his umbrella with me, he even pay my bus fare cause I don't know what the bus driver was talking about and he paid it for me and told me which stop to get off at so Asians are not as rude as you think icon_idea.gif

ive never and i dont think i'll share my umbrella with a stranger but i might consider after what happened the last time.

i was walking to the car park when it started raining and it was getting heavier. had to walk real fast (couldnt run, cos i was in heels), then all of a sudden, this lady came up to me and ask if i was going to the car park. she then shared her umbrella with me.

it was nice of her to do so, guess i should also pass on this act of kindness some day..

It depends on whether I have any way to help. If it's something simple like the situation you've posted above then sure I'd help out. since it's within my ability and if nobody else is around to assist them. Otherwise, even if I passed by someone with a broken down car (I did once in an unfamiliar area biggrin.gif) what the hell am I gonna do? laugh.gif It's kind of selfish but I'm a profit/loss guy and if it results in a loss (of time and energy with no gain for me) then I'd rather not do it at all. Loss in this case means wasted time/effort, and not necessarily material loss. I don't have a problem helping someone in need as long as its legit.

Car Situation:

#1

Me: *walking*
Stranger with broken down car appears
Me: Keleta losak ah?
Stranger: Haah
Me: Wow.
Stranger: You ada no. mechanic?
Me: Nope. Saya pun bukan dari sini.
Stranger: ....
Me: ....
*walks away*

vs

#2
Just keep walking.

laugh.gif doh.gif laugh.gif

Some random old grandpa with lots of heavy stuff walking up/down steep stairs? Sure help (IRL example too). A mak cik with her hands full trying to open a door? No hal. Sure help. Guy with car on fire trying to save his expensive ammoshaf? Kick/drag his bontot away but that's all. I ain't dying for you laugh.gif Plus, Malaysia is very dangerous nowadays. You gotta be extra careful that you're not being conned or hustled by criminals looking for an easy target like that family with a "moto rosak" looking for "help" in Selangor somewhere I think. Whoops this rant has gone too far off topic so I'll stop now tongue.gif
