for better thermal profile, definitely go for Illegear.

QUOTE(l4nc3k @ Dec 26 2013, 09:58 AM)
1. No preferred brand.. But am more inclined towards NOT Asus.

2. Budget is around 1800~2000. (can go a bit higher till around 2.3k, but preferably in this range, unless the specs is really too far difference)

3. A little bit of everything - some mild photoshop, mild gaming (mainly dota2, can accept playing in medium graphics), most of the time use for casual surf and watch movies, music, etc. Sometimes also need to do some simulation (am a chemical engineering student ~.~).

4. Prefer small dimension-ed laptops (13" the best), and as light as possible because I will be buying a new monitor (any recommendation too?) And if possible Haswell core (can live with Ivy League though)

Edit: 5. Having touchscreen will be cool. but i can live without it la cuz for me its just a flashy function.

Sorry if my post is too long. Hope sifus can help =D
*
for your requirements, its good to have a bigger laptop with dedicated graphics. so i would at least suggest you to take a 14 inch laptop rather than 13 inch, as those are more inclined towards business/girl's/normal/business students usage. some more, 13 inch laptops rarely have dedicated graphics to support your medium settings in dota 2. so, your options :

Dell
Inspiron 14R, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM1849 [2.32kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), Linux, 6 cell; W8@RM2049

HP
Pavilion 14-N059TX, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2099[2.03kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8; colors: silver/black

if you want lighter or thinner, can go for the HP Pavilion 14. prices are in RSP and negotiable.

Thanks for the advise, but the U series of i7 processor will it good enough on the video rendering processing? as compare with i7-4700MQ
*
not as fast as i7-4700MQ but since you want something thin and light, thats the best for you. you can even take advantage of the IPS screen in the Acer for your photoshop usage, as it has more vibrant colours compared to TN screens.

if don't consider the U series, what would be my choice base on my criteria?  smile.gif

the main point here is not whether get U or not. its the point that i suggest based on your requirements, which is a light laptop. normally light laptops hardly have MQ CPU, so that makes it hard to find a high performance laptop that fits your criteria. if you dont mind about weight, you can look at this :

ASUS
N550JV-CN077H, i7-4700HQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080; IPS matte)@RM3799[2.7kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, backlit keyboard

Hey thanks for the recommendation. But after walking around at Lowyat just now she likes the ASUS design, cost around 21xx, end up buying that one. I  doh.gif  a lot because GPU 2Gb is pretty much useless.
*
haha, as long she likes it, price is never a problem. icon_rolleyes.gif
but IMO, yeah, it is a waste for buying a laptop with that price tag and ended up not benefiting those specs. doh.gif

RM3100 is the furthest i can go.. i've screened thru some models and i find that Lenovo y410 and MSI GE60 2OC-097US 15.6" are equally good.. except that MSI has a bigger screen .. Do you mind providing me some other brands that are on par with these? I couldnt make up my mind @@

if you are movie enthusiast, you should take full HD screens. for other brands, there isnt anymore.

EDIT : price can be negotiated. try get Y510P for RM3200. icon_rolleyes.gif

for me, it is worth it. the problem is the unstable touchpad but problem can be solved with an external mouse.

do research on your own is better.

Oowh...tq..anyone know what diff between local n International warranty?
*
local - claim warranty direct from manufacturer inside the particular country, no matter on-site or carry in.
international - claim warranty direct from manufacturer everywhere regardless where you are. however, it is subjected to T&C and availability of the model in the country.

BTW, this question is too general. I would suggest you to do research on every manufacturer's warranty policy before asking at here.

QUOTE(nerdphotog @ Jan 1 2014, 12:07 AM)
Hi,

I would like some advice on what laptop to get based on :
1. Preferred Brand : Apple, Acer, Asus, or any recommendation
2. Budget : RM 3.4-4.5k (of coz the lower the better)
3. Usage (photo and video editing)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size (13-14in)
5. IPS/retina display screen or anything similar which would have similar color display from diff angle, >8gb ram, >256mb ssd or anything like tat.
6. Processor i5 and above .

Your advice is kindly appreciated smile.gif
*
those multimedia or gaming laptops will benefit you. but for SSD, it is quite impossible.

Illegear RE-13 Pro, i5-4200M + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080 IPS)@RM3999[2kg][Onkyo, SoundBlaster Cinema], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), Backlit Keyboard, FreeDOS, [CPU Options: i5-4200M - i7-4900MQ]
Illegear RU-14 Pro, i7-4750HQ + Intel Iris Pro 5200 + (1920x1080 IPS)@RM3999[1.9kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), FreeDOS

Apple is overpriced, for Acer, Dell and ASUS, there is an option for it but they are 15" models, so they are out. so if you put out 13-14in, you can get this :

Acer
V7-582PG-74508G52k, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M + 24GB mSATA + 500GB HDD + (1920x1080 IPS; touch)@RM3399[2.2kg], 8GB, W8
V7-582PG-74501225k, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M + 256GB SSD + (1920x1080 IPS; touch)@RM3999[2.2kg], 12GB, W8.1

ASUS
N550JV-CN077H, i7-4700HQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080; IPS matte)@RM3799[2.7kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, backlit keyboard

Dell
Inspiron 15 7000, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M (GDDR5) + (1920x1080; Touch)@RM3599[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8SL, backlit keyboard, 58Whr

prices are RRP and negotiable. do note that Dell doesnt use IPS screen but during my hands on, the colour accuracy is very good, its like the best TN panel out there in the market. even the colours hardly wash out.
