I'm not sure about the card, but you can definitely get the NUS card, you get pretty much some discount at most of the stores like burger king, pizza hut and topman.

For laptop wise, i suggest you get it in Malaysia! Especially during pc fair because you can get better offer (FREE STUFFS) that might be useful and it would be expensive to get them in UK. Get a camera here cause you'll see lots of different building structure in UK!
No need to buy new shoes to bring to UK, just wear ur current ones which is comfortable. Slippers, you can buy in malaysia those cheap ones - anyway, u only wear slipper at home. I dun think you would want to wear them out there cause it's freezing cold!! unless you want to save till summer.
Winter clothing, it's true that there are lots of winter clothings in UK but it can be expensive (depends if you want to get branded one or not) if you buy them in primark, it can be cheap. It would b expensive if you buy from NEXT or Marks & Spencer.
Socks, you can bring some frm malaysia or get it there.
You really need lots of socks cause when it gets winter, socks will keep u warm.. hehehe
*
I got myself an overcoat at River Island for 60 GBP and it's something that keeps you real warm even in winter. I don't think you can get something that good in Malaysia with the price tag.

About the slippers, yea, I got my faithful RM10 slippers from Malaysia, you can't really find any cheap "pasar malam" slippers here laugh.gif

Below is based on the living expenses at Bradford University.

rental-50 GBP per week (hostel campus, everything included)
mobile phone-around 25 GBP per month + 5 GBP calling card (vodafone)
food-50 GBP per month
entertaiment-around 5 - 10 GBP per month (depends but doesn't vary much)

Hopefully this helps and also, do get yourself a rail card, it'll come in handy with loads of discounts.

wat course r u studying?
let's say i gonna  study at bradford Uni for 1 year, the fees should be around 10K GBP
after i sum of everything u listed there, cost of living shoud be around 300GBP per month. so total expenses for 1 year at there should be RM 120K ( minimum ) ?
and for any emergency case, i spare a RM30K there, so the whole thing with RM 150K should be sufficient?
*
Well, I had a discount because I'm from INTI so my fees and halls of residence both cost 8800 GBP per year.

Minus the accommodation, 3000GBP per year for living expenses is more than enough and you will have quite a bit of spare cash to go for trips as well. Don't forget you can work part time too, earning around 30 - 50 GBP per week, so basically, you'll have quite a bit of cash to spare if you spend wisely smile.gif

*PS, I did Mechanical Engineering.

A printer is pretty handy when you need it. Sometimes the printers in the library/labs have pretty long Q, especially during the deadlines for assignments or coursework.

Besides, you will be priinting a huge chunk of notes and as well as your final year report.

You can gather another 1 or 2 buddy, share some some cash and buy the printer. Each person buy their own refill so change the refill whenever someone wants to print. That's how we do it last time laugh.gif

Just a friendly opinion, if you guys are thinking about cooking yourself, do spot for the special offer (3 for 2 / buy 1 get 1 free /half price) deal. There's plenty out there and in addition, if you're not brand conscious, you can try out those Tesco branded / Morrisons branded stuff because they are almost 50% cheaper than the branded stuff.

About the A4 papers, they are slightly more expensive but not TOO expensive. Try and get some of those Tesco branded papers or Stationary Box.

PS elb, your friend's laptop is a Toshiba?

i am so excited ..going to uk end of next month, but still no idea with what to pack now...how many cloth and pants or trousers i should bring? Maggie mee buy here or buy there? My relatives there told me the tastes is the same one, they asked me better bring a rice-cooker..Haih...i am so ...don't know what to do now....even excited now but still feel a bit depressing cause leaving my family soon..
*
Don't bother about maggi mee since there are pretty decent Nishin Ramen here which cost around 27 pence for a pack. Bring a small rice cooker if you can, if you can't, look out for 2nd hand sales since most people will sell theirs.

Don't worry about leaving your family and etc, it's the same for everybody and it's a good chance for you to grow up laugh.gif

Yes they have waterproof stuff. The most popular waterproof technology is a membrane called GoreTex. Heck, even Prada Sport has a range of clothes which are made with GoreTex.

Expect to pay around 60 for GoreTex shoes (let's say, from Clarks), and 200 for good GoreTex (winter) jackets (let's say, from Tog24). If you don't like them heavy, there is a lighter (and pricier) GoreTex XCR version. Alternatively there are many other clothes made from different waterproof technologies which sell for cheaper.
I agree. Open up your taste buds!
*
I used to get Nishin but I found out there'a pretty nice instant noodle from a company called JingMaiLang and it's great stuff (plus it's 27pence as well). But sadly, still need sometime to find it here in London.

i just came back from uni pre-depature briefing, the uni people says no need bring maggie mee, as there are a lot of asian stores there...but the maggie mee there is not cheap, after convert the price into ringgit, at least RM1.50 per pack...and should we apply 'International student card' and 'Nx2d'(i can't remember the name, just roughly like this) Card? as the travel agent called MSL said these cards are useful cause got discount everywhere? Actually all these benefits we can actually have it by our uni student card as well, isn't it?  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif one more month leave..........
*
Yes. RM1.50 per pack, but if you calculate it backwards, you're spending RM3000 + airticket to transfer something that is worth RM1.50. Try and bring a 5 pack maggi mee for your first week, that's all you need.

Save your space for something you can't get here in the UK such as some herbs, snacks or stuff.

I'm not sure what is the card you are talking about but most uni offer the student this card called NUS card and you can get pretty good discount here and there.

I need management books.

No matter how cheap they are, they are still alot more expensive then Malaysia.

Amazon marketplace books are on average 20pds per book or alot more if the book is not a popular one. And for unpopular books, you cannot find them on ebay as well so even worse.
*
You can really consider not getting them because someone I know is doing her PhD. and to date, she hasn't even bought a book yet.

All I'm trying to say is, you can get most of the stuff you need from the library itself at Bradford Uni. It's not the best library around but they have stuff you need and with Athens, you can gain access to alot of online journals/resources (you can even read Economist/Forbes/Fortune via Athens).

Also, if you're doing Masters, you're given a bigger book loan limit (more than 8 I believe) so it's really not much of a problem at all smile.gif

---
Dreamer101,

They cost more expensive here even if I get the spices at a local middle east store. Basically it fluctuates around 1 GBP for spices which mean it's around RM7 for a pack.

On what else you can bring, you can bring some Pill Chi Kit (those for stomachache ones because they come in pretty handy when you need'em).

There are those extremely cheap instant noodles like Morrisons or Tesco branded instant noodles, 8p a pack. Also, you can consider bringing some packed herbs or soups like those bak kut teh or some gingseng chicken soup and etc smile.gif

Not those ordinary soy sauce. Thick ones. The one they used to fry hokkien mee or fried kuey teow.

As for normal soy sauce, sure you could get it in UK. But some brands taste weird. Some taste just fine.
Yeap. You're right.

The closest I can find is the BlueDragon Sweet Soy Sauce, that's as close I can get.

Dont' taste them, eat them to fill up your stomach, that's it. Besides, microwave food isn't that healthy as well, even if it's just some simple dish, eat fresh food like vege and stuff.

Also, microwave food is kinda expensive as well, if you wanna save on your food, cooking yourself is one of the best choices around.

*Will go hunt for some Malaysian stuff at China Town tomorrow.

Few questions needs to be answered, hoping someone can help.

International students pay a higher fee compared to Euro Union students, International students fee is about 11,000 pounds compared to Euro Union students at about 3,000 pounds

I wonder does the system have a flaw?

Assume that a malaysian student who completes his first yr here and wishes to further his/her studies in UK, if he/she applies for a university in UK as a Euro Union student.

Does that mean he/she will be able to enjoy the priviledge of paying 3,000 pounds annually?
*
It doesn't work that way. You can't simply fill in your nationality as French when you're holding a Malaysia passport.

Both my friends who are doing Phd. are funded by: -

1) Her professor
2) A huge company

So my point is, do well in your degree, get in good terms with your project supervisor and that's where you'll start off smile.gif

IIRC you can claim them back if you're still a student.

i haven apply, jz considering this as it involves a large sum of money.

er.. the 'help' i mean... usually, those who going there will have the college that have twinning program to assist them whether they r in malaysia and when they reach UK, right? the help i mean was the service provided by college/uni to do the procedure, visa, application and how to settle down or get used at the new enviroment at there
*
About settling down, don't worry. Most universities provide some pretty good welcome week where you get loads and loads of information about living in that area.
