My brief review of the ZaggKeys Folio with backlit keyboard for Ipad Air. I purchased this from Zagg USA and was delivered to my home in KL within 5 working days (DHL Express). Cost USD99 + Shipping USD19.66 = about RM410. After much research, I felt this keyboard was best suited for my workstyle which involves a lot of typing. The backlit keyboard was a bonus feature which imo looks very sexy. Definitely an attention grabber at work, college or in the public.
However the main purpose I invested a lot for this casing was for the keyboard and I'm not disappointed. I've tried few of the Logitech keyboards+casing at Mac City but it was the layout of the keyboard or the limited angles for the screen that did not pique my interest. Logitech's keyboard + casing keyboard imo just didn't feel natural like the normal desktop keyboard.
Fast forward to the Zaggkeys Folio. Without the ipad air fitted in the case, it roughly weighs the same weight of the Ipad air. If I had to estimate, the combined weight of both is around 900g plus minus. I like the clean look of the outer shell which has a soft padding of faux leather. All the connection ports and buttons are easily accessible however the Apple logo cannot be seen and there are no holes near the Ipad's speaker grills. Instead they have an ingenious method whereby the casing is slightly wide near the speaker which acts as a directional manipulator to cause the sound to aim directly towards the user. The Ipad itself can be detached or fitted in this case with little effort.
The Bluetooth keyboard pairing is flawless and simple. When the shell is closed shut, the Ipad screen and keyboard auto turns off. Upon reopening, both devices pair up within 1 sec. The hinge for the Ipad screen is quite strong, it doesnt topple backwards easily from the weight of the Ipad. I've read of customer complaints that the hinge may get slightly loose over time but in my three weeks of usage, it still feels solid.
The keyboard for its size, imo is

The typing surface has a sort of velvet like feel. They key strokes are punchy and the layout is very similar to a notebook/ desktop keyboard. Typing long uni assignments and work reports with this keyboard is a great and I would highly recommend it.
The backlit comes in three intensities/levels and has a total of 7 colors to choose

. I usually change it according to my mood and is really cool.
My drawbacks for this case would be the directional keys (up, down, left, right) are almost useless outside of a word processing app. It doesn't even work in the browser to scroll up or down. Secondly, it is slightly difficult to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the quick settings (adjust brightness, turn off wifi, etc).
I absolutely love this casing and would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great keyboard typing experience on their Ipad Air. Only wished it is readily available in Malaysia and didn't cost so much.
