not sure if Tesco is a good idea. for a simple utility bike like that, maybe look at the Raleigh Ugo? should be able to get it for around RM800 I think

quality of those bikes... can't say much... it just rides like a bike...

if there is suspension on MTB models... it might not work or work well from the start or it might just konk out after a short while... frames might not be light (but it's not a requirement from you)... some parts like pedal spindles, bearings might rust more easily due to lacking of seals (means you need to take care of it more like keeping it out of rain or wiping it down if you got it wet)... saddles might sag after a while and stuff like that...

actually.. i am pretty against going to hypermarket to buy bikes... even the cheap ones...but the fact that they are the only ones with cheap bikes now which you know for sure is there is the only reason to go to them....

my reason for not buying from hypermarts is, there is no one there that can help you with adjusting anything on the bike... and if there is problems after you buy it... how do you get them to sort it out for you? they have no mechanics or spares or replacements (not that if you buy cheap bikes outside, there will be replacements of parts or stuff like that but at least you can hope)

the irony here is that this old style bike shops that sells cheap bikes are increasingly hard to find.... you need to find those instead of the current boutique bike shops as they are the only ones left that is willing to sell those cheap lerun or whatever bikes....

if you can find one near you... i guess that is the better place to buy it...at least, if you run into problems... you can hope that they will fix or adjust anything for you at no charges... hypermarket bikes, anything you need outside bike shop to touch for you = money spend....

if you are not in a hurry, go look for those old antique bike shops first...

else, try bicyclebuysell.com or mudah.my... look for those lerun, trs or oscar brands... hopefully they have something that is within rm500 range... but, as i say... dun expect much (it won't ride like a dream and neither will stuff on the bike last as long)... it is just a 2 wheeler that just rolls along...

another point to add:

when your bike tyre punctured, you need to send to bike shop to fix up!

so its advisable to buy from your nearest bike shop available to you! It's the after service you have to look for it as we are not cycling for 1 or 2 times...

Thank you for your answer, so when buying from hypermart there is a question of quality in that part might break quick and get wear and tear easily, also there is a lack of after sale service, also you mention that RM500 is the lower price bikes, i hope i understand these correctly

Currently my intended usage for the bike it to ride to the nearby mamak to tapau or to the nearby park to play basketball, both are 5 min walk away, so in term of usage I wont be "biking" per se, will this kind of daily usage wear and tear the bike as much as you say ?

Regarding after sale service, there is a bike shop near my place but they sell high end models, but will they service my bike in case of serious breakdown ? I've havent ride a bike in years, from memory the worst I had was the chain breaking, never did replace anything else, (i rode the bike for fun as a kid)

chances are that a bike out of tesco will be in serious need of proper tuning of which I'm not sure if anybody there can do for you. getting from a bike shop at least gets you that free tuning out upon purchase. ask about their servicing too. some give 2 or 3 times free service, others maybe as generous up to 1 year.

the parts used on hypermart bikes are more or less the same... i am saying that those bikes might run into issues or like malleus says... requires adjustments, tuning and stuff like that where the hypermart guys is not equipped to deal with... it's is just a cash and carry thing with them...

what i actually meant on the reliability of parts used is actually based on the price range of those bikes where we can call them cheap enough just to take it out to buy stuff and run errands... not where you buy it from as they are most likely going to be the same grade of components...

will your usage wear your bike down?? i'd say most likely no but this things are hard to determine or gauge... it will give you a couple of years of usage at worst and a lot more if you take good care of it.... things like punctures, tire and tube replacements will be common as with any other bikes...

just, imagine the illegal workers with their daily transport bikes... you are practically buying a new bike similar to those...

any bike shops will service any bikes... it is just that they will charge you for most things if you did not buy from them... minor stuff like changing tubes and tires they do not charge you for service labour if you buy the tire or tube from them....

more than 10 years ago... below RM500 would not be a problem...now, no chance...

petrol also more than RM2 per liter... .and that gets you what? 13~14kilometers of mileage providing the right conditions....

and that haven't even include the maintenance of the car... not even counting if you own a car in the first place...

that is why you see illegal workers riding bicycles all over the place....

else, walk your 5 mins journey and deal with causing irreparable damage to your RM500 pair of nike....
