i will shooting an event this sunday which is bowling games between members of my department. there will be special guest who is our japanese advisor attending.
i will using my nikon d3100 and my 18-105 lense + nissin di622 mark ii
yes, i know some centre will not allow shooting using flash inside their compound. the flash will be use maybe at makan makan time after the event.
i'm thinking some shoot before the game, some of the action especially our advisor taking down the pins and the end of the games. some of the members will bring their family too.
any setting i can use for this type of event?
bored edy to use auto in this kind of unfamiliar event..
I don't think your equipment are good enough for the game. Most bowling centers I know have really bad and dark lighting. I remember last time I need around ISO1600, f2.8, 1/250 to get proper exposure. With your 18-105 lens, you need to get ISO6400 to get the same exposure, which I think you D3100 can't really go that high.
The only solution I can think about to capture the pictures are to get fast lens, 50mm f1.8g would be enough imo since you don't really need to be far away from the subject.
shoot 4k video, then grab stills for your boss' facebook
but uhh, in this case, you are going to be suffering alot...most likely having to shoot at iso3200 and more to get decent captures...but that is usually with fast f/2.8 lenses...
TS said he gonna use flash, so i dont see much issue there, off course better gear will help, but then, he didnt ask if his gear enough, he is asking how to shoot with his gear.
To me, TS, if you intend to cover the event, boring shot eg, registration, speech by VIP, food time, little chatter and prize presentation etc, your gear with flash should be ok, just add in a few bread and butter shot of player / vip / bosses / rolling the ball.
fast shutter may help. I would rather u have some shot with high iso + noise then no shot at all.
Off course, if the event at those dark and music pumping bowling alley then.. god bless you. No way can shoot.

+1 using shutter priority is favoured here, else the action mode on the dial will have to suffice, High ISO is a must with no flash, you could get away with 1/150 on ISO 1600 IMHO, just go there earlier to see the venue and lighting to get an idea, take that chance to decide on the best setting

this is video i found on utube regarding on where my event will be held. pretty dark from this video..maybe because recorded using phone IDK lol... i guess i'll shoot some opening ceremony, some of the actions if i can get some decent shot , and the ending of the event.. need to confirm with the management if the flash is allowed.
