your experience (engine dead just b4 reaching condo on friday night) sounds similar to my situation when crankshaft position sensor is dead (but mine no 'smoke' in engine bay). I have only seen water vapor from radiator cap, so is it overheated? Besides, not sure if it is related to rain (water) which wet/shorted some circuit.
