Hi, I'm applying for a masters program which is research based. I'm required to submit a summary of research interest. As i do not have much research background, what shall I write in the summary?

In which field/topic/subject you want to explore for your masters.
In some uni, a summary means 5-10 pages (short )research proposal. The definition can be varies depending on your faculty.

Isn't there any guideline given from your faculty?

I'm applying for pharmaceutical science. The application part says something like "Summary of your research interests (50 words or more)" , so i was wondering if it is really a short summary of research areas you're interested in.

Summary of Research Interests
------------------------------------------
I’m a Pharmacovigilance officer in the Food Safety and Quality Division at Sabah Department of Health. I received my Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science (cum laude) from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. My primary research interest is the Controlled Release Drug Delivery because it impacts the health and well being of millions of people every year through its various applications in cancer, heart disease, vaccines, and tissue repair. My research has focused on examining various aspects of fundamentals of drug delivery from why and when controlled release is needed to the different mechanisms and processes involved, including aspects of mathematically modeling these systems. A significant portion of my research is devoted to delivering drugs over both the right time period and to the right place in the body. The mechanisms of release for achieving appropriately timed drug release include diffusion, swelling, osmosis, and polymer degradation are investigated. For accomplishing targeting to the right place in the body, groundbreaking approaches such as nanosystems, liposomes, and receptor targeted release are also studied. More importantly, one of my reasons for applying to this competitive Masters program is the need for sophisticated drug delivery systems which I want to explore rare opportunities for the design of drug delivery systems to improve both desired chronotherapeutics outcomes and patient tolerance of pharmacotherapies by taking into consideration their specific circadian chonokinetics, chronodynamics, and chronotoxicologies.

Did you talk to any supervisors in that university? Probably, your research topic will be decided by your future research supervisor and he/she will tell you what you should put down in the research interest. Application form submission is just a formality, who is your supervisor, how good is the supervisor and the difficulty of the research topic is the thing that you need to highly pay attention.
