QUOTE(cHaRsIeWpAu^^ @ Jan 9 2021, 12:44 PM) hi guys. i want to buy a NAS to store my movies, photos and backup. what model should i looking to? should i state my budget and estimated storage i want? below 2k, around 2tb. QUOTE(ozak @ Jan 9 2021, 02:47 PM) That is too small budget and size. Save more. Can. Custom build NAS. Use FreeNAS or other OS.Just movie alone is killing your storage size. You not keeping 480p movie right. Pentium G6400 - 239 Gigabyte H470 HD3 - 599 8GB DDR4-3200 - 159 Cooler Master MWE Bronze V2 550W - 239 Fractal Design Define 7 (up to 14 HDD) case - 699 |

QUOTE(cHaRsIeWpAu^^ @ Jan 9 2021, 02:56 PM) thanks. the ds220+ seems promising. Nope. Its not hard to assemble PC anyway. Got plenty of videos for it.ohh, i tot 2k is sufficient . actually i more focus on the photos, movies wise just extra if storage is limited. do you know any seller doing this kind of customized build NAS? im very lazy to set up and learn from zero hahaha. |

QUOTE(cHaRsIeWpAu^^ @ Jan 9 2021, 03:11 PM) may i know what's the advantage to have freenas vs inbuilt OS like synology? Pros:sorry ya if i asked too stupid question. A lot cheaper. You can do whatever you want. Like hosting the website yourself, or setup game server. CPU and RAM upgradeability M.2 PCIE or SATA support Amount of HDD you can install. Can transform it into regular PC. Expansion like SATA cards, Thunderbolt, Video capture cards. Cons: Hardware assembly required Setting up OS takes time. Usually only one time setup. Consumes a bit more power. (if you think 20ish watts idle from the wall on Pentium 6400 is too much) Casing can get very big This post has been edited by TristanX: Jan 9 2021, 03:26 PM cHaRsIeWpAu^^ and WaNaWe900 liked this post

QUOTE(xxboxx @ Jun 20 2021, 10:02 PM) These days open source NAS's OS also more easier to set up that makes it almost as easy as prebuilt NAS. To stay ahead prebuilt NAS offer multitude of apps so that it's functions extend beyond just network's storage. Yup, I got a massive NAS with 50TB+ of space. Upgrading to Z590 with Intel 2.5Gbps LAN soon as well. Triple M.2 slots for webhosting files!I just tried Synology's Note Station as I want to use less of Google's apps, before this I use Keep. I was surprised that Note Station is very features rich. I thought it was just simple note taking like Keep. Formatting is rich like One Note, can even embed youtube video in note. Notes can be organized in folder and sub folder and also support tagging and searching. It's really an underrated app. This post has been edited by TristanX: Jun 26 2021, 11:11 AM WaNaWe900 liked this post

QUOTE(xxboxx @ Mar 6 2022, 12:49 PM) DS1520+ is 3k As of today, it is cheaper. If budget but new build Chasis RM530 CPU + mobo RM1200 RAM 8GB RM150 PSU RM300 SSD RM150 (for OS) Total RM2330 Pros: Cheaper, sleek casing, modularity, can choose what OS to put Cons: Have to manually install and configure OS, don't have first party integrated apps (depends on individual preference) If just for network storage with RAID, media server and backup functions, I think custom build will be better choice. If use a lot of apps, using first party means less time spent on finding the suitable app and tinker with it. A lot of open source apps is only on web browser, it didn't have mobile app. Enthusiast will get more satisfaction from custom build, if want something with less work and time tinkering, pre-built will be better. QUOTE(Moogle Stiltzkin @ Mar 6 2022, 08:35 PM) looks good but, any option to add ddr4 16gb ecc ram for use in truenas? ECC needs AMD. AMD setup isn't power efficient. I'm pretty sure TrueNAS works fine with normal DDR4.https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/eyp5f...ecc_to_ecc_ram/ |

QUOTE(kaiserreich @ Mar 8 2022, 11:14 AM) Anyone did a lower power build? I got i3-10100 with single M.2, 1 7200rpm HDD and 1 SATA SSD. Consumes 20ish watts idle with FSP 450W SFX. Higher end boards consume more power. These custom build NAS are cheap but most of the recommendations revolve around using ATX PSU which are not efficient at idle power. My main Alder Lake rig is 50W idle and I have a 80plus Bronze 650W PSU. 50W @ 55sen tier means this thing will consume Rm240 of electricity per year if left to run for 24/7 A DS420 consumes almost 5x less. How many SATA ports you need? |
