Just movie alone is killing your storage size. You not keeping 480p movie right.

These days open source NAS's OS also more easier to set up that makes it almost as easy as prebuilt NAS. To stay ahead prebuilt NAS offer multitude of apps so that it's functions extend beyond just network's storage.

I just tried Synology's Note Station as I want to use less of Google's apps, before this I use Keep. I was surprised that Note Station is very features rich. I thought it was just simple note taking like Keep. Formatting is rich like One Note, can even embed youtube video in note. Notes can be organized in folder and sub folder and also support tagging and searching. It's really an underrated app.

Your NAS dedicated as NAS only or also use for PC? So much processing power feel waste if just for NAS.

Just curios when you said Personal Server is not VM is it 

I just thinking of setup Windows VM on my NAS as ad-hoc usage... still looking into the details

Pros: Cheaper, sleek casing, modularity, can choose what OS to put

Cons: Have to manually install and configure OS, don't have first party integrated apps (depends on individual preference)

If just for network storage with RAID, media server and backup functions, I think custom build will be better choice. If use a lot of apps, using first party means less time spent on finding the suitable app and tinker with it. A lot of open source apps is only on web browser, it didn't have mobile app. Enthusiast will get more satisfaction from custom build, if want something with less work and time tinkering, pre-built will be better.

Anyone did a lower power build?

These custom build NAS are cheap but most of the recommendations revolve around using ATX PSU which are not efficient at idle power.

My main Alder Lake rig is 50W idle and I have a 80plus Bronze 650W PSU.
50W @ 55sen tier means this thing will consume Rm240 of electricity per year if left to run for 24/7

A DS420 consumes almost 5x less.

I only need around 4 ports. Pretty much most motherboards will work i think.
