Hi guys,

I'm planning to get a NAS, Synology 415+, mainly use for download and stream movies to TV.

Please advice where can I get the best price for WD Red 4TB, 5TB, and 6TB. Or should I wait for Black Friday?

Thanks!

I think I'm a little late but buying hardisk online is a little risky especially when you require claims and warranty.

Hi Guys,

plan to build a NAS using FreeNAS. Any casing recommendation ? Intend to have 3~4 3.5" HDD.

I've not been keeping up with FreeNAS developments lately but the last I heard is they give pretty slow performance. Why not go with XPEnology?

Not too familiar with Qnap but I believe both have great and comparable features.

One year ago I found a local dealer for HGST in Kuching and was able to order 2x 4TB drives for my NAS.  I just dropped by their shop last week and was told they no longer deal with Desktop drives from HGST (only laptop).  They get their stock from KL though.  I think there might still be HGST dealers in KL, but it's damn hard to find.  I called the HGST office in Kuching and was told they send their drives to China to sell.  I'm going to be pounding their phone with calls until I get an answer I like.  Maybe I can even sign up as a dealer...  drool.gif

If you can get somebody in KL and check out Viewnet, they seem to list the 7200rpm HGST NAS drives for sale.

3TB - RM 579
4TB - RM 779
6TB - RM 1199

Woah, Synology hardcore fans.
Nice information from you. smile.gif
Base on your experience, 5 years is safe range yet.

Consider myself a late comer but I went straight to Synology DS2413+ 3 years ago. Never regretted it.

I am for looking for NAS box to be installed at home.
The NAS must support :

- support RAID 1
- hard disk space 1 - 2 TB
- clients support on IOS and Anroid
- support torrent download
- support VPN function
There  are NAS brands amd models  in the market.   How to select?
Any experience sharing and recommendation is welcome.  Thanks.

Budget? I assume you have a wired LAN home network? Just look into Synology or Qnap models and you have all the required features covered.

Budget is between RM 1200 to RM 1600.  My router does support both Fast and Gigabit Ethernet.    What model to select?  Any tips?

Also,  I plan to put the NAS at my living hall,  where is room temperature (without aircon) most of the time.  Do I need any additional cooling fan for the NAS box?

Synology DS-216PLAY. No additional fan required.

That is expensive. HGST is premium brand?
*
It is not premium but known to be more reliable than the common WD and Seagate.

Perhaps terrabyte for terrabyte, the HGST NAS variant is slightly more expensive than the other brands of similar sizes because the ones I quoted are 7200 rpm models.

actually the whole rack is my cpu case because limited space in my cpu case , i extend into my rack , nobody walk there move/shake the whole rack , the rack is very heavy, firm , usually i put together into a enclosure . i extend the sata using SFF 8088 cable. so there is no way to fail unless the harddisk not good enough , i choose WD Red because WD disable the drive head parking unlike normal Low power harddisk .

What you say does not reflect the pics you showed though. A bit of a paradox...
