merchant9 Reduce the connections per torrent, too many connection will cause congestion on some weaker router.

Does anyone here has successfully configured Synology NAS to work with Maxis Home Fibre Internet?

I have requested from Maxis for public IP and have configured the necessary port forwarding but I am still unable to get the following to work
1) DDNS (registered with Synology)
2) VPN (using Synology App)
3) Download Station to dlwnload YouTube

What else should I configure?

Thanks in advanced.
*
You need to port forward for external access.

Check which port is require for port forwarding on the EZ-Internet wizard and port forward it on the Maxis router.

I don't want to setup sharing VPN, just to make my DS214 connect to VPN for download.
1 more thing, is it possible if my NAS is connected to vpn, but i can still setup ddns to external access my my NAS?
*
You can setup your NAS to use a VPN connection easily. However, all traffic will be sent through the VPN.
http://torguard.net/knowledgebase.php?acti...ayarticle&id=79

I believe QuickConnect will still work but it will be much slower. A lot of DSM user are requesting to have a VPN client for the Download Station only.
http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.ph...=72775&start=45

I think you can improve your torrent speed by port forward and use forced encryption on Download Station.

Hi, i had subscribe TorGuard VPN service, the speed has improved, but just about 10~20%, still cannot fully speed up.
I found out i cannot connect the vpn with UDP port, any solution?
I think UDP may offer faster speed for my download.
*
I suggest you contact TorGuard tech support. I don't use their service, just providing a reference.

Maybe you have some configuration error. Set your torrent encryption to Always may help.

Guys, i accidentally deleted ALL my personal files when attempting to sync between my synology NAS and my laptop using Cloudstation. Is there anyway for me to undo this or restore the files and folders?
*
Don't have experience with Linux filesystem recovery but normally the files are not actually deleted until the sector is being overwrite.

I guess you should stop using the drive and send it to some data recovery expert. Hope it helps.

Edit : Not sure if you have recycle bin enabled for your folder.

Anyone using WD Red for surveillance station?

Wonder how long it last as CCTV is quite HDD intensive.

The promoters told me get Enterprise grade drive instead sweat.gif
Because their WD red/purple drive that use on CCTV keep dying or bad sector iirc, even after replaced new drive.

Had one WD RED/AV-GP 3TB, bad sector appeared within a year even it's just light usage(same as they said), i rma-ed it and eventually sold it off, and bought Toshiba 3TB instead.
So fat both of the Toshiba drives does not have sign of hiccup yet.

I am using WD Red for storage currently but I plan to use it for surveillance in the future.

Maybe I will upgrade to WD Purple if problem did arise.

Hi guys
I just discovered this tread

I am planning to buy synology previously, but after research I think better if i do DIY style (buy second had used PC and install TrueNas)
And I require good enough processor and at same time energy efficient
What do you think about i3 4160? is it ok?

Planning to use it as my home Plex server & media storage

Also, make sure your CPU model supported Intel Quick Sync for transcoding feature.

Generally that should be available except for for F series CPU.

I knew a SME that use QC with the default ports. It's been a few years and they are still fine. tongue.gif

Keep your DSM updated and configure DSM properly to prevent brute force attack then you should be fine.

For the bare minimum, use a different port to deter the mass scanning brute force attacks.

It's always a balance between security and convenience.

guys where do you buy your HDD?

i have 2x 12TB Ironwold (1 dead) ; can I xfer to to let say 2x6TB? Im using Synology DS423+?

create new pool on the 3rd and 4th drive?

Follow this guide

https://kb.synology.com/en-uk/DSM/tutorial/..._expand_storage

As for where to buy, usual place like lowyat or PJ digital mall

Suggest to buy retail as you never know how courier handle your parcel and HDD is prone to shock

never owned a synology. but i did own a qnap. im over with those prebuilt branded nas. i think truenas is better. the software is free and can use with the hardware u put together. its zfs which is the golden standard for NAS.

that said i dont think syn/qnap/asus will die anytime soon. too many newbs buy that cauz they dont know or dont want to know how to build the hardware  sad.gif

anyway before i migrated i got used to truenas first. once i understood how to use, setup and maintenance, then i switched over. for backup i recommend a 2nd nas to do the rsync to it with truenas. Or what people recommend is the zfs replication (i havent managed to get that to work to my satisfaction).
for qnap some model they had some defects. my 653a was affected. the mosfet up and died. cauz cant boot up the nas. its a known issue.

synology i havent heard anything bad. yeah just clean dust every now and then. set automation for scrub to monthly. long smart once a month. short smart once weekly.

backup depends on u. i do mine 1-2 times a year.

i use 4 drives in raidz1. If 1 drive dies, it goes to degraded mode. if 2 drives die, the whole raid is f***d. but as long as i have a backup its not game over. so i wouldnt worry about raidz1 its good enuff.
anyway ur situation ur warranty about expire. what about the software? at some point they cut u off from updates. with truenas u dont have this issue. eventually a new truenas will have a higher hardware requirement, but that isnt very often. also u can swap out parts as needed.

the thing is about these qnaps/syn etc. they got warranty, but if ever u need to send in repair, its expensive as hell to ship for repair or whatever. also remote support? totally useless.

The thing with Synology is they have decent quality assurance and security with their product and it's a big peace of mind. Maybe I am just lazy to self-build nowadays.

My last DS214 lasted almost 10 years until I switched to the DS224+ recently. The thing been running 24/7 for so long and I am more surprised that my WD Reds lasted that long as well. Was expecting the drives to fail much earlier due to earlier complains with WD Reds back then. laugh.gif

And, their support is awesome even after warranty ended. Had an issue when doing migration due to my own fault and Synology support remote in to sort it out for me quickly.

Don't think there's fake HDDs out there

You can also use this to verify
