It is expensive!  rclxub.gif  S$38.00 without postage. I got a friend to buy it from Tern Singapore. Blardy Singkee don't want to reply my enquiry through their FB page. But usual lah! Even worse, Tern Singapore is also under the same establishment from our local importers of Tern, Le Run Industries. Seems all over the world have this accessory except our local Tern. As I said before, good brand but we have to deal with f*cktard importers. mad.gif

No, its not. Tern's distributor in SG is Speedmatrix.

Thanks for the info. I also got got my info from a bike shop also. blush.gif  Anyway, still the same, they don't really 'layan' Malaysians.
*
Generally, that is the case with the basikal shops in SG. As a matter of fact, Diginexx and Speedmatrix are "related" companies.

A couple of years ago, I went down and visited a bike shop in the east coast area. Its pretty impressive with a wide selection of bikes. There was a second-hand Bike Friday Pocket Llama for sale.

I asked the salesman about the pricing.

His response was: "You from Malaysia? Save your money la, these bikes are too expensive for you..."

I turned my back and never looked back ever since...

Even at the Penang round-island ride, some Singgies came with their expensive bikes and were annoyed when we overtook them..

All that said, at least one cyclist from the island republic actually came up, said "hello" and introduced himself.. Got chance la for Singapore.. ahhaha!!!!

A silly question : Where & how you ride your folding?

I've been cycling on-and-off with full size bike.  I just have my first folding bike ride covering 20++ km on motor bike lane (16").  At the pit stop, I notice most of the guys have road bike crank installed, > 50 tooth.  The casual conversation is centred on "how fast".  On the ride, I tried follow those fast bikers but simply could not keep up ( my ave speed was 22km/h recorded by GPS), instead what I achieved is a faster credence vs riding full size bike.  Thus, I arrived this premature conclusion: Folding is most suitable for urban 'jalan-jalan' and 'cari makan' purpose, or as a short distance commuter.  For touring and speed, there are far better option available.  I don't want the fellow riders to tembak me because of this.  So would really like to know HOW and WHERE to you ride your folding.  Keep up the ride
*
Wah... You are very lucky to have the great gurus taking your query.. thumbup.gif

20km/h on a 16" bike is very decent. Is that your average? or top speed?

instead what I achieved is a faster credence vs riding full size bike.

"Credence" shocking.gif rclxub.gif shocking.gif I think you meant "Cadence", which is a technical term on how fast you spin your chainring.. Very useful for climbs and straights..

Thus, I arrived this premature conclusion: Folding is most suitable for urban 'jalan-jalan' and 'cari makan' purpose, or as a short distance commuter. For touring and speed, there are far better option available.

Depends on your riding style, strength and stamina.

My take:

1. Majority of the people who take up cycling with a folding bike are leisure cyclists. They go out on social rides: hence - jalan-jalan cari makan.

2. Some foldies are serious commuters. They gave up their car to use the folding bike and found that its an efficient way to get around.

3. A handful of mad foldies have gone the distance as bicycle tourists, bikecampers and bikepackers.

To sum it up, it takes all sorts. Some foldies progress for meager leisure riders to hardcore tourers. Some even took part in folding bike races (you can do a Google search with plenty of stories written about them) and well, some just gave up and go into road bikes.. brows.gif icon_idea.gif brows.gif

I am just curious to know how you use your folding, given it is a folding bike regardless your configuration. For example - as a 'road bike' for speed? as a 'touring' for distance? or anything? May be the best way to frame it is "how to you get the maximum fun' from your folding, which is of course, very individual. Bike it just a machine! Keep up the ride

Ahhhh... Okay, I follow you now..

I get my fix with the following bikes..

The smallest bike in my stable is my 16" Dahon. Used mainly for bikepacking in town-hopping trips.

It's pretty nippy!

My workhorse in the stable, used mainly for touring..

We do fairly a bit of touring.. Seen here in Southern Thailand..

We also own two full-suspension foldies that are mainly used for offroad rides..

My latest aquisition: a 24" folding bike.. This one's a real stunner!

This evening a riding kaki brought her Tern Link D8 for me to tune the rear derailleurs as the chain was skipping between cogs. When the bike was here, I was suprised! shocking.gif  First the gear cables was frayed and the cable stub was just a mere inch left!  shocking.gif  She said she never touch any adjustments. It's really shocking to see that a main dealer having their posh outlet in Sea Park can sell the bike without proper adjustments. They sell straight out of the box. The first ride she had after getting the bike, the mudguards fell off! I was a witness to that. Until today, there was more shock to come. The rear derailleur was not a Neos but a Suntour which was shaped similarly. This plasticky rear derailleur is really lousy! I am not sure if this was the standard RD for the Tern Link D8. Suntour maybe good in suspension forks but they still need a lot of improvements on their RDs.

Luckily I still have the original Neos 8 speed from my Boardwalk. She switched to the Neos.  Those intending to buy Terns, especially the Link D8, check the RD.
*
Ahh.. Not surprising when the Sea Park shop's "tech" guy was merely a cycling enthusiast.

And yes, the RD used on the LD8 is a Suntour RD. Cost issue la..

By right, the bike shop should first, do a pre-delivery inspection and tune-up before selling the bike to your friend...

But all good things said and done, when you have a half-assed technician, that's what you get.

Anyway, good on you Wong Seefu, on addressing the problem.. thumbup.gif

ask her to complain in the tern forum..., mebe JoHon will reply...

SR Suntour manufactures components as well aside from suspension forks and dampers. One apparent upgrade is their "soap bar" folding pedals on the Terns because many of the Wellgo pedals actually broke..

user posted image

The broken Wellgo pedals..

So, that said, its no surprise why the Suntour RDs are so frail. Some riders broke their RDs on the Dahon Visc 18 and Dash P18. This prompted a recall and a replacement..

Oh that one ah.... ya lah, the aksi tech guy.... only layan you if you have big bucks to spend....

Ah, this one is a "touchy-feely" subject.. The Tech guy still behaves like a Bicycle God even though his background is merely a cycling enthusiast. What is shocking is the fact that he actually meddles with other people's bikes and charges a fee..

The boss of the shop is not bad, she is now well-known among the folding bike circle. Even the media has hailed her as a darling among the cycling community..

Malaysia has limited units only allocated. I think it's 7 units only. Sam took 2 already. Johnny has got one coming but he hasn't decided to sell or keep. Maybe you can 'gecek' him to sell. Tell you a secret. I found a used unit of Dahon IOS P8 which shares the same frame. I have decided ti stick to 20 inch wheels so I won't be taking it. It is listed in Mudah.my and it's selling quite cheap and according to the seller, it's quite unused. Go ahead! It has 8 speed but you can always upgrade the gearings though.

http://www.mudah.my/DaHon+folding+bicycle-23225739.htm

Good Luck if you are taking it. It's on public forum now.  tongue.gif

You got your facts wrong...

The 24" Terns made its debut in KL back in 2011.

A few sample bikes were shown here: Eclipse S11i, P24h (now, with a proud owner in Ipoh, Perak) and a P7i (going around RM3.3K at the Rodalink sale - ex sample bike, pretty thrashed up).

As for the Eclipse X20 (Pirate-Ninja), production was delayed after it was announced in July 2012. It only went into full production sometime in May this year and the priority was Europe and North America. The first EX20 came to Malaysia sometime in early June. Subsequent batches (5 in one shipment) went to two owners in Taiping, three more private owners in KL. Another 9 units are expected to arrive here anytime now.

On the latest shipment for the Eclipse P9, only one came through. And that one belonged to Mrs Samo.

One issue that plagued the importer was the fact that demand for 24" bikes is low. They are only interested in cashing-in on the 20" Terns..

Speaking of the Dahon IOS, there were two models: IOS XL (11-speed Alfine IHG) and the P8. There's still one new bike in Chin Aik, Penang.

The design is similar to the eclipse, but if you look closely, there are stark differences.

The Eclipse S11i, I tested this bike and rode it to work... Very elegant, graceful and efficient with the Shimano Alfine 11 drivetrain...

Eclipse P7i, this is the last one at Rodalink Botanic..

Any one can recommend a fun, inner city cycling route where the aim is to explore lorong-lorong, jalan-jalan kecil, or areas hard to reach by car?  Of course, I have no intention to compete the road with the City Liner, taxi, truck, SUV alike like Chow Keat.  If there a light traffic route in the inner city for exploration away from the hustler and bustler of traffic?  Would like to hear from you all.  Keep up the ride

For city exploration ride, one guy Jeffery is doing it here is the link: KL Cycling Map project

These fellas gather every Saturdays and explore the city for their mapping project. There is a bunch of 20 people in the group, some really psycho road warriors who don't believe in wearing head protection... rclxub.gif shocking.gif rclxub.gif

Another person who actively cycles around KL is Master Urban Explorer Sin Tai Lim.. You can read about his exploits here: Master Sin's blog

Here's an article I wrote about him: Journey into the inner city

Thanks for the correction. I also got my info from another source. Blind leading the blind, probably.  tongue.gif I gave up the idea of getting the Dahon IOS P8. I was thinking of the trouble in getting 3 bikes in a car if I take a bigger folding bike. I rather stick to 20 inches wheels for now. Now to go look for Pacific IF Reach!  tongue.gif The one in Chin Aik is P8 or XL?

No problem Master Wong..

Contrary to what you believe, the 24" is "slightly" bigger than a 20". If you know how to pack, then certainly, its no issue...

The Dahon IOS in Chin Aik is the P8 model..

What the seller was asking for is Mudah.com is a very decent price, given the fact that he paid much more for it..

Now to go look for Pacific IF Reach!

Some points to consider:

1. Short suspension travel.

2. Doesn't fold well and compact.

3. Cheapass components.

4. Fewer than 10 owners in Malaysia.

5. Tuned by Master Modifier Fei Lee.

Its a 7 speed.

Seems comfortable enough, although the gearing will not be able to allow me to go very fast, unless I change the crank set from 48T to perhaps 53T.

What is your definition of "fast"?

And why fix something that is not broken?

I would prefer the bike to be able to cruise at about 20 to 25 km/hr on level roads.    Have not taken the bike at that speed yet, so I have yet to find out more details.

It's kinda last-minute, but knowing MNCF, sure got lots of roadies..

No details about the "Mass Ride" but it would be nice to cruise around the City Centre when the roads are closed..

Bro Yun,

I am not interested in the criterium race for the Mayor's Cup.

MNCF planned this last-minute, they mentioned: "Mass Ride", so, my best guess is a 4km round trip along the Bukit Nenas - Raja Chulan stretch..

But knowing a Hungry Beruang like me, I will ride from my home in Subang Jaya to KL, pusing-pusing and go to the site, meet my friends and then work my way home.. My wife and I will be riding to the city centre on Sunday.. Car Free, so, we support la! smile.gif
