QUOTE(eggplants @ Aug 11 2013, 12:21 AM)
hello guys,

I'm interested in getting into scuba diving as it looks real fun, but have zero experience in it.
How long does it take from knowing nothing to getting license/diving around the popular islands in malaysia?

I see that I need to probably do some intro courses first; but there aren't any proper diving places nearby KL. So does it mean I will need to travel out to hotspots like Redang to learn and then dive?
*
It depends on how you want to do it. You can do a crash course on the island, 4D3N at any east coast islands between the months of March to October. If you have a bigger budget and more time, you can always take a flight to Thailand or Indonesia to do a crash course over there too.

But it's not really advisable as you have to cram all the theories, videos, exams, practical skills and dives into that short trip. We normally suggest that you do it with any city dive center. They will have the theory lessons at their outlet in KL, confined session in swimming pools in KL. These theory lessons and confined sessions will most likely be done over a period of time, say 1 or 2 months, depending on you and your instructor free time and how fast you can learn/how many pool session you'll need. When that is all done, you'll then need to go to any islands to do your certification dives, this is usually a 3D2N trip to one of the east coast islands.

If you are alone, most of the time, the dive center will arrange the time to fit with other groups/individuals to make a bigger group of students. This way you also get to meet new people which can be good in the future if you need a buddy to dive with.

For a list of dive centers in KL, you can start by referring to post #2.

QUOTE(Pandaman @ Aug 11 2013, 06:50 PM)
Hello guys! Wow congrats on V3! Anyway, since I got four days off from Thurs till Sunday, I have been googling and searching around for an underwater camera. And off all my choices it came down to this particular camera that I like ;

Olympus tough TG-2

Has any sifus here used this camera instead of the popular go pro? And can anyone suggests me where to find a shop that sells underwater camera accessories shop in klang valley? The price of its underwater casing is soooo expensive! Almost the same price as the camera itself. Uwaaaaaaaaa

Please help me (buat2 muka compel minta tolong)
*
You can check out Intova underwater cameras. It's one of the alternative for GoPro. Check post #2 for Rainbow Runner's shop details and contact. There are also other dive shops that are listed in post #2 that specialize in underwater photography products.
http://www.intova.net/
http://rainbowrunner.net/index.php?id_prod...troller=product

Generally, underwater housings cost as much as the camera. If you are looking at SLRs, most of the time the housing cost much more than the camera itself. Then there are also strobes, arms, this and that. So what's your rough budget?

Up down up down. Can't maintain buoyant at same place for safety stop.

It'll take some time and will get better with more dives and practice. biggrin.gif

ahhhh icicic, thanks for explaining, but i remember SMB helps to maintain during 5m safety stop, no ?

Hm, it does help you to estimate what depth you are at. But it won't help if you are shooting up together with the SMB. biggrin.gif

Thank you guys.
will buy mesh bag la.
why mesh bag cannot be used for fly trip?

thanks
*
Mesh bag can, but anyone can see thru your bag. You'll also 100% have to pay for sports equipment surcharge.

You can get those cheap cheap luggage bag, as long as can masuk your fins then should be alright already. Or just handcarry your fins when you travel by plane.

I use a big dive bag for my equipments. When travelling via plane, got a black plastic sheet to cover the bag so people can't see the bag. tongue.gif Remember to lock your bag too.

whats SMB?
*
You'll get better with more dives. Don't worry. biggrin.gif
I used to up down up down and get very disorientated during safety stop. Especially if there is a big group of divers hovering together doing safety stop.

SMB = Surface Marker Buoy = Sausage

Hi people,

Just got my OW license ~ 3 weeks ago.
Sensei-s, where would be a good "training ground" for newbies like me ?
My buoyancy control is quite bad and i am quite a slow learner  laugh.gif
*
Congrats! Where did you get your OW license and with whom?
Maybe you can check out the other islands that our country has to offer. Malaysia has some pretty good diving spots and are all easily accessible compared to other countries. You can do pool dives but it might not be worth it since you won't see anything in the pool. Practice makes perfect for buoyancy, you'll get the hang of it soon. wink.gif

guys... need some advice for my open water license on equipment.

Fin (+booties)
Wetsuit
Mask...

i think thats it right? for 1st blood.
*
You mean you are planning to buy this for your upcoming OW course?
Forget about the wetsuit and fins. If you wanna get any equipment, get the booties and the mask. The rest all rent first. When you sure you wanna invest more into this hobby, then only you save up and get a good pair of fins. Wetsuit can get any normal wetsuit.

Hey guys, has anyone been to Lumut for diving before? Quiver Team is there and I have some extra dives yet to finish with the team. Was planning for a short trip to Lumut but have no idea if it's worth as there's little information of the diving sites there.

Any information & experience sharing would be great! Thanks!

Lots of seahorses and macro life. Good if you are into macro photography. laugh.gif

Make sure to get a DM to bring you. Or else you'll see nothing.

I would say go for G15. It's a good compact camera and it does take nice underwater photos, videos too. You have more settings to play around with.

Then again, I've not use a GoPro before so can't comment much.

What brand is the housing? Canon ori housing for G15 cost around RM800 or so.
Is it the one that is similar to Canon housing but not Canon housing? Can't remember the brand at the moment. laugh.gif

Ahh yea, that's the one. It's something like OEM I think. Not sure, summon juniorkirk, he knows better.

It's similar to Canon but not sold under Canon brand or something. No Canon logo also. I know some people who are using this housing for Canon S series. Not bad. biggrin.gif
